Accented Cinema - Episode 44
To most people, the live action Mulan film is just a boring, soulless war movie. But to me, it is an insulting experience. I can forgive it for all the inaccuracies in depicting Chinese culture. But I cannot forgive this film for what it did to the character of Mulan: Turning her into a symbol of submission.

Correction 2: A lot of comments are saying the poem should be 双兔傍地走. I have seen both used. But the version I shown at 0:22 says 兩兔, and it's from the year 1094 (Song Dynasty), so... Yeah I'm sticking to that. Correction 1: Thanks to commenter Luke Huang pointed out, I typed the wrong line of the poem at 17:47. It should be 雄兔腳撲朔,雌兔眼迷離,兩兔傍地走,安能辨我是雄雌 Instead I repeated 兩兔傍地走 twice like a dumb dumb. ------------------- Wow, 18 minutes huh? Guess I really do hate this movie.

Basically, the writers think that in order to empower women, you got to turn them into men. The animated Mulan was empowering, because she was herself, because she was a woman.

Ugh you don’t know the number of times I saw people saying the woman ‘wasn’t like a woman’ and was ‘different from other women’ because she was strong and powerful and bla bla bla. That’s literally gender stereotype. There are strong women and there are weaker women. There are strong men and there are weaker men. Stop thinking that all women are weak and strong women ‘are like men’. edit: I'm not talking about Mulan I'm just ranting about the writers I see on the internet who don't think that 'normal' women are capable of doing stuff. Also English is not my first language and my meaning of 'strong' doesn't just mean physical strength, I meant like someone who is generally an empowering person (Don't people say like strong, independent women??? Maybe I misunderstood) (I think animated Mulan is strong too! Maybe that just isn't the right word though. I just can't think of a better word due to my lack of vocabulary) but yeah it makes sense too because it's one of the stereotypes. But ik animated Mulan isn' about that I'm talking about other books and movies I've seen on the internet and I think it is relevant to 'seeing women as men to empower women'.

The only semblance it gave of "be your feminine self" was her taking off her armor and letting her hair down. 😳 Like, no bitch, women still need armor and hair gets in the way. I hated that "accepting who you really are" was represented in a very stereotypical way.

@@hellohello8061 Here you are defining physical strength as being empowering, but Mulan was never stronger than everyone else. What made her empowering was her cunning mind. Maybe you should stop stereotyping "BIG AND STRONG" as empowering. Here they completely ignored Mulan's original (animated version) personality, she was neither too masculine nor too feminine, she was an intelligent warm-hearted person. This movie made her one of the guy warriors basically (except better than them), completely ruining her uniqueness and turning her into a Mary Sue.

I’m a straight dude and even I felt empowered by animated Mulan. She wasn’t just a female who proved her strength to be equal to other men, she was a child protecting her family, a soldier protecting her homeland, and a friend protecting her comrades. Holy shit dude I feel exactly the same way as you. In the animated movie, where the whole China bow down to her, it suddenly struck me. "She wasn’t just a female who proved her strength to be equal to other men, she was a child protecting her family, a soldier protecting her homeland, and a friend protecting her comrades," captures it perfectly. When realizing that, as a girl who's around her age, I felt empowered. You don't have to tell people "Woman can be just as strong as men are!" directly to the audience's faces to empower female, just show it. (Sorry for my bad English btw.)

Same also with the live action Jungle Book. In the Disney animated Jungle Book, they show how Mowgli was able to grow strong by being supported by a lot of friends and having a lot of "good" (debatable) role models. They shape him. In the live action, he's just a Mary Sue who proves Man is the ultimate animal by constantly besting other animals much older and more experienced than him by Dexter's Labbing up some twigs and grass into stuff even modern technology can't make with those materials given a lot more time and people.

I don't think you necessarily need an Asian writer in order to write a good asian story, as well as you don't need an European for european story or an African for story based in Africa. But you definitely need someone well educated on the topic (doesn't matter which race or nationality as long as the person respects the culture) to help the writers, director, costume designer etc. Casting someone just to be inclusive doesn't sound right to me. Also if taken to extreme, I personally don't see a point in making an american movie when noone included in making was American (I'm from Europe and I would find it wierd if they made a movie based on for example french tale with writers, director and everyone included being french, that would make it a french movie with american money, not american movie; but as many actors as possible should be french, because it should look like it takes place in France). I'm not sure if it makes sense the way I wrote it

16:44 im not even Chinese but this pissed me off. If according to the ballad, you can't tell the difference in gender between two hares running side by side, then mulans dialogue in that scene completely contradicts the whole message by telling us that she was in fact able to tell that one was male and the other was female. It beats the whole point! It takes the main, conclusive message from the ballad and comepletely strips it of its meaning!

I personally look at the newest version of Mulan as a prime example of toxic feminism that upholds patriarchal standards. It's like some terrible form of divine irony that a narrative that is suppose to empower women does so by glorifying toxic masculinity and subservience.
@arnavbhatnagar1985
@arnavbhatnagar1985 Жыл бұрын
That is so on-point! In today's world feminist tag has lost it's respesct because everyone equates feminist with what correctly is tagged as femiazzi. And you have so perfectly described exactly what's wrong here which is making the world hate every "feminist", and even these so called "feminists" don't realize the harm they are doing to femininity. Females do not need to loose their femininity and adopt toxic masculity just to be equal to males.

One thing I noticed in the animated movie: when Shang tells everyone to climb the tower at the beginning of "Make a Man Out of You", he gives everyone two weights that represent discipline and strength. At first, everyone treats the weights like something holding them down and they try to use brute strength to climb the tower despite those weights. Mulan succeeds because she can use the weights as something to pull her up rather than something weighing her down. Symbolically, this is her using the virtues she's taught in a new way that helps her succeed rather than inhibit her. In the live-action version....... we get pails of water she has to carry up a mountain.... and she...... carries pails of water up a mountain. Sure she probably got physically stronger, but only after doing what she's told enough times that it works out for her. It's a lot less nuanced, and I'm sad we didn't get to see that again. It's even less empowering because we're led to believe she's able to do this because she's the chosen one, not because she took her life into her own hands.
@thichinhphan4010
@thichinhphan4010 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks to your input, I realized the metaphor (?) with those two weights *-discipline-*- & -*-strength-* and how they serve the animated version's narrative. The different treatments of them between the male soldiers and Mulan at the end carry more nuances, it's almost like taken from a real asian moral tale : + Treat the weights like unwanted baggage and use brute force : none reaches the top of the pole + Use them correctly, then even a physically weak person can slowly but surely reach the goal

I actually beg to differ there. It's not as deep but she reached the top because she decided to stop letting her insecurities and the message she was taught while young that "women bring honour through marriage", which was partly influenced by the commander's pep talk? A lot of people comparing the animation and live action also don't seem to realise some of the more fantasy/comical plot points are difficult to carry over to live acting. I would in fact say that if they brought the musical elements over as is it'll probably spoil the whole thing.

I haven’t watched the new movie, but in the Chinese movie (I believe, it is from 2000 or around) Mulan becomes a commander, and the whole point is not so much her soldier skills, but her strategic thinking. The animated scene where Mulan's father is limping and struggling to run after her in the pouring rain was so gut-wrenching. It's really showed the severity of the situation. The live-action took away all of the emotion out. It even cut out the scene where her dad is attempting to train but failing miserably. Lastly, the only reason Mulan wanted to join the war was because she literally had no other choice. It was either she joins, or her father dies. It had nothing to due with her wanting to be a warrior from a young age or feeling trapped by the fact she's a woman. She never cared for all that anyway. She cared for her father. The live-action takes all this away when they turn her into this young martial arts prodigy from the start of the film.

Well said. I think this is an especially important moment to show through a Chinese/Asian family, since people often think that all Asian parents are strict and heartless towards their children. I'm Chinese, and although my parents can be a bit stern when it comes to my grades, I've never doubted that they love me and would do a lot for my safety, happiness, etc. And I'm sure there are plenty of other Asian parents out there who would do the same. In the original, having Mulan's dad run after her showed that in the moment, he wasn't thinking about his family's reputation or even his own legs. He was worrying about what might happen to Mulan in combat, because he loved his daughter more than he valued honor or personal comfort. I feel like that really gave the message that Asian parents care about their kids just as much as any other parent would... and the live-action version didn't have that at all

I do believe it was on some level that she felt she couldn't conform to femininity. I think that on the surface, it was to save her father, but she was also going on a personal journey to find her place in the world outside of what women are "supposed" to do. The film pretty plainly states it with the entire song 'Reflection', with her rubbing her makeup off and looking at her bare face in the mirror, crying about how she isn't able to be "the perfect bride, or a perfect daughter", because she can't conform to those patriarchal expectations. The motive behind Mulan running away is two-fold; to save her father, and to save herself. Gender nonconformity and rejection of extreme, strict gender roles is a very explicit and expressly stated message in the original Mulan. I don't know where you got the idea that Mulan didn't feel restricted or trapped into gender roles, she literally cries about it in an entire song. The lyrics LITERALLY say; "Can it be I'm not meant to play this part?" cmon dude

I'm a Black girl but I always looked up to Mulan growing up because I was bullied as a kid and it was nice to have a Disney character who could fight back. I respect the Princesses before her on the roster because most of them were abuse victims who had to depend on others to get through it all, but it's also important to see someone who is defending themselves and their loved ones and not being disrespected for it. It's really infuriating to see such a beautiful story get bastardized in a blatant cash grab, and the fact that the movie was filmed in the place where Uyghur Muslims are being tortured and killed at this moment is disgusting.

It’s something different that, although she may not be a Chinese descendant, she can relate to because she is also facing as much patriarchal or societal pressures. And as a black girl, if she was in a white-racist neighborhood, went to a white majority school, or to be honest, EVEN if she wasn’t living in America, she would have faced so much hardship- *In fact-blacks in America aren’t the only ones facing racial injustice. It’s on an international scale, but a lot more subtle than USA’s.* Also....... If...... If I was the one who commented that, but started off with-“I’m a Pacific Islander, but I always looked up to Mulan because I was bullied” you wouldn’t have criticized at all WHY I was introducing myself as a Pacific Islander. I think that says more about _you_ than you think. Rather than going-Oh you must be an ‘American’, you guys are always on about your race-Maybe you should ask yourself, am I saying something problematic? Am I, by the harsh dictation in my comment, only perpetuating a system that’s trying to shame black voices into silence? I’m not black, and I know this much. You might not be a bad person, so I don’t want to bash on you without considering that maybe this isn’t something you know. But if you’re looking to not unintentionally sound hurtful, I would suggest educating yourself with the topic online. Please have a good day. _P.S. OP! If I got anything wrong, please feel free to correct me. I just didn’t feel right not defending you when you introducing yourself as black gets hit with such an insensitive comment. I think this essay made me realize something about the animated Mulan. When Mulan fights, she fights for the people. The other soldiers have different goals. They want the honor of serving in battle. (The ladies love a man in armor). This is what drives the other characters. This is shown best in the scene after Girl worth fighting for. The soldiers pay respect to the fallen troops. Mulan pays her respects to the people of the village, specifically the children. Mulan’s protection of people is a feminine trait. Yet that is what drives her. Mulan is strong because she is a woman.

Everytime I hear Mulan's father say "The greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter" always makes me tear up because when I was younger I always hated being a girl. I can't play with my brothers because I'm a girl, I needed to wear dresses because I'm a girl. I'll get a doll and not allowed to ride my brother's bicycle because I'm a girl. I needed to learn and do all the chores around the house because that is what a girl is for. Being able to watch Mulan when I was younger made me so happy and made me realize that I can't just be limited to what a girl "needs" to do or learn. My rebellious phase came afterwards but I'm grateful for it because that's how I came to be who I am today, and I think my dad has learned to accept the way I am through the years (but my mom is still as stubborn as ever lol) thank you for coming to my tedtalk

I remember how my mom wanted me to wear skirts and dresses and I hated it because I was such a tomboy when I was younger, she would always convince me with candy lol. Luckily she did let me play outside with my brother and the other boys living close. But I do remember having friends who's mom were so focused on 'girl things' that it was just tiring, even for me. Or friends who needed to help with cleaning and other chores while their brother(s) could be lazy all the time. And then you have parents who panick when their little boy wants to be a princess for Halloween/Carnaval, like let them be. I even knew a little kid who did not get a Elsa+Anna cake for his birthday, they put damn Olaf on it and he was sad. As somebody who loved boys stuff when I was young I turned out to be very girly. And why would it matter if I turned out to be a "manly lesbian"? (I hate that word so much). Nobody should care. As long as we're happy and healthy! Mulan and Anastasia will forever be my role models ♥ I still feel so many emotions while watching those movies

Elisa Castro You’re the one who sounds like a crappy person. Imagine growing up been told that you must do all or most chores because you’re a girl but your brothers are only expected to do very little or nothing. Parents should treat all children equally, not based on gender. I’m fortunate enough that my parents treated me and my brothers equally but I’ve witnessed my two female cousins started from a young age expected to wake up early in the mornings to make breakfast, snacks and do laundry for their older brother because he was a boy. He recently got married but doesn’t know how to cook or clean even though he works from home but his wife who works long hours outside their home tirelessly comes home to cook and cleans before resting while he just lounges around.

It really falls in line with what Lindsay Ellis said about Disney's new brand of "girl boss feminism" what's just one woman doing the man thing and being recognized for it instead of critiquing the gender roles themselves (Mulan being a qi warrior (wtf), Jasmine becoming sultan, etc.) It does nothing to question or hold patriarchal systems accountable and only insists that a woman must become like men to be considered equally valuable. Sigh.

Cú Chulainn okay, but "femininity is default state", really? You have a valid point, but don’t go as far as to become like NoBullshit where every woman that isn’t sexualized and hyperfeminine is automatically feminist propaganda. Your criticism should rather be that they aren’t depicted as real people, rather as stripped down ideas of people without the character. Not that they aren’t feminine enough for your liking. OP put it better.
@fen4613
@fen4613 3 жыл бұрын
Cú Chulainn it was an example on what line you should not cross. You called femininity the "default state" of women, which is untrue. Femininity and masculinity are social and cultural concepts, varying from place and context, there is no "default state" and there is nothing wrong with 'masculine' women. A masculine woman can be great if she is written as a good character.
@chazaqiel2319
@chazaqiel2319 3 жыл бұрын
@@fen4613 There are some psychological studies that indicate that femininity and masculinity could be much more than social and/or cultural constructs. These studies are largely empirical, and thus far from guaranteed truths, but they do make sense; culture and society don't come out of nowhere, they are the result of the base human psyche that responds to the environment it inhabits. The fact that males and females tend to fill similar roles in most cultures across space and time would indicate that masculinity and femininity are, in fact, hard coded into the human brain. Personally, I stand by Carl Jung's thesis that man and woman possess both a masculine and feminine drive, and that they are simply more prevalent in the respective gender. Therefore, one should be free to embrace or reject both however they see fit. But stating that masculinity and femininity don't exist and are just a product of society is a dangerous idea that creates more confusion than anything
@fen4613
@fen4613 3 жыл бұрын
Chazaqiel Is this misunderstanding-ception? I didn‘t say they don’t exist. I said there is no "default state", because humans no longer have an inherent nature, we‘re cultural beings. Rolls being similar in most cultures could also be mainly explained through biology when we first developed cultures (which started before the stone age even), males tend to be bigger and build up muscle faster, while also having higher testosterone levels. You can’t really choose your preferred role in society if you couldn’t stand in a fight and are indoctrinated by 'tradition' centuries after. Being oppressed isn’t being feminine. If you leave a child without other people, it will either die or become feral, unable to mentally develop, because we’re so dependent on culture. If it wasn’t strictly cultural, a feral female child would suddenly act feminine and start caring about making makeup from dirt? Femininity isn’t natural, it’s observed, learned and then maybe adapted. Obviously that decision of adaptation isn’t as black and white nor conscious, but it’s definitely not because it’s a default. I really don’t know if we’re arguing the same side or not, I‘m kinda confused by now.

I only ever saw the original a few times as a kid and even I feel like there's a lot more humanity shown in the original's relationships and characterizations that were just taken for granted.

Thank you for this video essay, it was wonderfully made and created. I remember when I saw Mulan at age seven or eight, I felt like I found someone who understood how I felt and I am not Asian, I'm an autistic woman of Hispanic descent. Whenever I felt like I was scared/nervous about tests, exams, and finding the college I had to apply to, or sad, I would remember I'll Make A Man Out of You or the Emperor's wise words and think "if Mulan- a girl who has to struggle to succeed in a man's world like I do because of what I was born with- could do it, I can too." Even now, I watch it for both childhood memories and because it's that good of a movie. I have not seen this movie yet- though I may due to my friends having Disney+ and my father being curious over the remakes- but based on your review and others, it seems to be a dishonor to the ballad, 1998 animated version, any other versions of Mulan or even Disney itself. I have read the ballad, saw two other adaptations- one that had Jackie Chan's son as one of the soldiers- and also read enough Chinese mythology and history to know that in this version, they really butchered it. Phoenixes in Chinese myth are immortal, chi is the energy in all of us so it does not mean that only men can use it, witches did not exist in China, and even though women were indeed told to marry and bear children, China did had female emperors for a time- yes, I mean Wu Zeitan and Dowager Empress Cixi, two badass women in their own ways- so perhaps some women were respected in Chinese society even if female empowerment in China still has a long way to go. So I guess all I have to say is that like you, I can understand how you felt when you first saw Mulan and why she is such an important part of your culture but also why the 1998 version was empowering to you and everyone who saw it. I applaud you for sharing your views and to those who liked the remake, I respect your views but merely say to watch other versions of Mulan and also read the ballad to see that it was the ballad that made this movie and all other versions of Mulan possible and respect what the person in this video is trying to say.

Empowerment now means you are born better than everyone else and they are keeping you down because they're jealous. You don't have to work hard or have any hardship to achieve this level of greatness.

Someone told me something very wise that I want to add: Action is not without reaction. So when you keep kicking down someone who can beat you up because you think they're too guilty to respond; based off, they've been kind enough to let you off the first time, you must be very careful if you're going to keep going about it. They can stand up enraged and you can bet they'll never listen to reason again. This is what empowerment must understand. The powerful and the rich can also be Oppressed at heart, and just like a tamed lion can realize their destiny as per what people think of them is a wild lion, can casually proceed to kill the lion tamer, ending the circus.

@@wofls2713 It was an act of war. You should see the 2009 Mulan movie from China. She actually gets to become a commander, but then becomes an alcoholic grieving the costly mistakes she made as a commander, literally weeping as she cleans the blood off of wooden dog tags.

The message where the father says: "The greates gift and honor is having you for a daughter" has resonated with me for years and it felt true to it's words because the father always loved Mulan for who she was. The 2020 version seemed to just have glossed over those words which just sucks man.

The 2020 version just glossed over every meaningful point of the '98 animated version. Or more like, glossed over half of it and the other half was replaced by something, that spits in the eye of the original message. Like Mulan having superpowers, instead of thinking outside the box.
