It's great that you have decided to visit such a small town but you missed Tum - is'a a tiny village 2 kilometres east of Łęczyca with a romanesque 12. century church, one of the most impressive in the whole of Central Europe ! The Tum church is visible from the castle tower of Łęczyca, did you see it ???

Although I spent part of my childhood in Łódź, before moving to the U.S., I only passed through Łęczyca once briefly. I would have never considered Łęczyca as a tourist destination. Thanks for showing us around. Yes, the lady at the castle said it is a good devil and it had one human foot and one devil-like foot. And the priest said said the church is being restored. Kazimierz Wielki was one of the Polish kings and a great ruler.

Musem lady was describing Devil Boruta who is very closely related to mythology of Łęczyca as he was supposedly living there. There is short article in english on wikipedia if you want to make some sense of why he was presented as half human and "good" devil.

The Devil of Leczyca (called Boruta) is one of the very old and classic Polish fairy tale characters. According to legend, he is also a Polish nobleman, one of his feet is human, the other is a hoof. He is quite a good-natured and cheerful devil. There are many fairy tales about him, in which he does something for the good of people in a humorous way, e.g. by opposing Lucifer. A lady met in the tower of the castle tried to tell you about him.

Boruta was always my favorite character in fairy tales I've read in my childhood.

The lady said that this guy (and others as well) are the depictions of Boruta (a devil from the Polish folklore) who is a good character. She said “here’s the tail and here’s the hoof. And this is the king Kazimierz the great.” About babushka she said “no, no, she is a neighbour to the family… Babushka (granny) would look more like me, she has a young skin”

Thank you so much for another great video from Poland - already added to my Poland Travel - Łódź playlist. A few comments: 1. Boruta the Devil is a legendary "benevolent" devil that is supposed to have been protecting a treasure hidden somewhere in the area. In the nearby village of Tum there is a famous church where one can see a "print" of his palm in a rock. 2. The sticker on the church door said "Pchać" meaning Push. 3. Not sure if the trains were from 2 separate companies but if they were from the same company then you would probably have been able to get a ride on the "local" train with your original tickets. 4. Regarding Wrocław, there is a town of Sobótka a bit SW of Wrocław where one can hike a beautiful mountain called Ślęża that also features some ancient (pre-Christian) rock sculptures. Another great part of Wrocław is the area with the ZOO, Szczytnicki Park, and gorgeous old villas. Enjoy the remainder of your stay and exploring Poland! :)

Yes, probably. However many churches in Poland are locked because of robberies. Then you should go to the priest/administration and say you want to see the church, then he will probably open it for you.

You skip the best historical monument in Łęczyca: Romanesque collegiate stone church build in XII century, located 2 km from main market of Łęczyca (the place called Tum, behind old town) and nearby early middle ages settlement.

Unfortunately you guys missed The Collegiate Church in Tum wchich is 2 km away from city and according to legend connected with the castle by secret tunnel. Devil Boruta is a king of slavic devils, and it was a noble men that lived in near city marsh lands. You can watch on youtube some short movies about Boruta with englisch CC, type "legendy polskie" or "the legend of boruta".

Casimir the Great(Kazimierz Wielki) was the last king of the Piast dynasty. The first dynasty of Polish royal families. He found Poland wooden and left it bricked. He founded the first Polish University in 1364 (Jagiellonian University). He legally sanctioned the settlement of Jews in Poland. That is why the Jewish district bears his name in Krakow (Kazimierz). The legend of his Jewish lover Esterka is also known. The devil Boruta, also called mudguard - a fictitious figure, a devil inhabiting the underground of the castle in Łęczyca. Boruta should not be confused with another popular devil, Rokita. According to legends, he can take different characters. A typical and favorite, most common figure, is Boruta a nobleman, also called Boruta Tumski or Black. He was a tall nobleman with long, black mustache, with black eyes, dressed in a rich robe covering the tail and a cap covering the horns. The devil Boruta has been known in the Łęczyca region for a very long time. He is derived from the Slavic demon, Boruta (Lesza, Borowy), who was to live in forested and marshy areas of today's Łęczyca. Borowy was a forest guard and a guardian of forest animals and a patron of hunters. The very name of Boruta comes from the transfer of the human name to the name Bór(Forest). It is also believed that the name Boruta comes from the pine forest - in Old Polish pine is Boruta. After the baptism by Mieszko I in 966, missionary expeditions began to Christianization of the population. Christian priests, when converting the Slavs, identified the characters from old ones with the devil. In this way, the People's Slavic demon became the devil of Boruta.

The eager guide lady at the castle was attempting to explain to you the legend of the friendly Boruta Devil, an endearing and famous local mythic character, evolved from a pagan guardian spirit of hunters. In his current reincarnation, popular since the Middle Ages, he was/is a nobleman - mischievous, loud, heavy drinker, quick to a drunk saber duel, and chasing the ladies - but the same time always dutifully showing up when the locals need assistance - lost miners, wounded soldiers, etc. He is a patron of miners (many depictions show him holding a mine lamp) and there are actual mines and military units named after the character. Aside from that, shame you missed two local landmarks, both within a walking distance of about 30-40 minutes: the 12th Century Collegiate Church in the village of Tum, one of the oldest in Poland, and the 9th or 10th Century pre-Christian fort, recently partially recreated. On the way there, there is a historic village/live museum with old peasant houses, blacksmith forges, windmills, etc. All cool stuff. Next time try ice cream and gofry in the central market square. One of my fave day trips out of Lodz. A good call for an unplanned adventure. (By the way, the town is on the path of the longest continuous equestrian/horseback riding path in Europe, which starts in Lodz.)

Polish word `rynek` should be pronounced `rineck` and probably comes from old germanic `ring`, because old slavic settlements were round or oval and main spot (used as a market) in the middle too. Square markets came to Poland with latin civilization.

We just watched your video of Łęczyca and nice job. As a non Polish speaking Australian married to a Łęczyca local I had a little laugh at the pronunciation as it is 100% not spelt like it sounds and I know that struggle very well!! My best way to spell it to English speaking/hearing ears is -When-Chit-Za. There's a nice lake there too which is worth a look, a big park and another nice church. It's a very sleepy laid back town.

Z małych miasteczek, które warto zobaczyć w Polsce są Kazimierz nad Wisłą. Mieszkam w Warszawie, ale gna mnie co roku do tego uroczego miasteczka z licznymi atrakcjami, kawiarniami, restauracjami. A to wszystko zatopione jest w starej zabudowie renesansowych kamieniczek. W starych spichlerzach powstały fajne knajpy. Ale równie godne zobaczenia są: Sandomierz nad Wisłą i na Mazurach Mikołajki. W Mikołajkach można wykupić rejs po największym jeziorze w Polsce Śniardwy. Akwen tętni życiem. Są ciekawe widokowo rejsy jeziorami i kanałami do Giżycka. Na turystów czekają kajaki w Krutyni, skąd płynie się szlakiem wodnym. Podziwia krajobrazy, jak z innej epoki. Firma zawozi was i kajaki nad rzekę. Po skończonym rejsie, dzwonicie do fimy i odbierają was z kajakiem. Czujecie się na wodzie bezpiecznie, bowiem nie będziecie tu sami - będa was mijać inne kajaki. Można podłynąć do stanicy i tam coś zjeść i napić się. Rzeka Krutynia jest bezpieczna i płytka. Mikołajki to ulubione miejsce żeglarzy. Będziecie zaskoczeni dużą ilością wspaniałych jachtów. A więc zapraszamy do Polskich przemiłych dwóch szalonych turystów, po kolejna porcję przygód.♥♥Lizneliście Mazury bo byliście w Olsztynie, ale to Mikołajki są kwintesencją Mazur.

You need to check out a Warsaw. There's beauty old town district with a "Kolumna Zygmunta". There's a siren which is a symbol of the city, an castle. If you get there you need to check out a muesems too. I highly suggest to went into "Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego" Museum of Warsaw Rise (absolutly stunning) and Museum of Polish Military - "Muzeum Wojska Polskiego" -it a must seen. Kinda cool looks Centrum of Knowledge Kopernik (Centrum Nauki Kopernik). In order to a story kept in Poland, You should scheck a military cementary called "Powązki Warszawskie"

You must visit Lidzbark Warmiński. It is a small town with a great history. Nicolaus Copernicus and many famous people lived here. This city is home to the Castle and the best hotel in Europe. It is a region with very historic buildings and churches. I suggest you visit the thermal baths and the nearby villages which are beautiful. In 1809 a great battle took place near Lidzbark. It was Napoleon's war. The old name of Lidzbark is Heilsberg.

Łęczyca is famous for the devil named Boruta. And the castle is the seat of Boruta. The lady showed you Boruta. The priest told me there was a renovation and work was underway. The local people are a bit surprised, because Łęczyca, according to Polish opinion, is not a tourist town. Foreign tourists arouse interest because it is something new. If you were in Łęczyca, visit nearby Uniejów. An even smaller town, and you will surely be surprised by its tourist offer, castle and magnificent collegiate church. You cannot miss this town.

The closest pronunciation would be "Lentshitsa" (fonetically) letter "Ę" you can pronounce like "AN" in English :)

(If you have more time maybe try and visit Silesia). Great work on picking up Polish words, the Ł sound. As you asked about the pronunciation of Łęczyca. The ę vowel is pretty important here. In every word with ę try to say 'en' like ŁENczyca. (it's not exactly the same sound, but very very close) There's similar trick for the Ą vowel. The word "mąka" (flour) is pronounced almost as mONka. (and this works for all words with the Ą sound)

If you have a time I suggest to visit Tricity, or Tri-City is a metropolitan area in Pomeranian Voivodeship, consisting of three cities: Gdańsk, Gdynia, and Sopot.
