There was an actual train-tank collision in Forst Zinna, GDR, in the 1980s, and you can say both lost: the tank, a T-64 stuck on tracks after the crew decided to take a shortcut, was completely destroyed (although not as spectacularly as on the video), while the train derailed, killing several people (the tank crew managed to escape).

With this train? Not much more, probably less, even. Most modern tanks are relatively lightly armored and use reactive armor for full protection, which wouldn't stand against the armored car in any capacity.

The train is actually a disguised british class 20 loco (specifically 20188) which is currently at the Severn Valley Railway. This loco weighs 73 tons. Now the carriages probably wiegh about 30-40 tons each, so a combined load of approx 150 tons. The tank is about 10 tons. Now if the loco did have armour plating attached like in the film, it would increase it's weight accordingly, probably going up to about the 100 ton mark. So we have a combined consist of about 180 tons. Couple that with the inertia of the train & the fact that a 10 ton tank is not moving, the tank would not be destroyed, but punted out of the way. It would not stand a chance. The explosion is fiction.

A train of the weight you've mentioned wouldn't just punt it out of the way, but rather tear open the tank at the seams and upon being punted away, the turret would fall off. But yeah, that explosion is fiction. No MBT explodes like that.

Actually the tank would probably just be pushed out of the way and be fine. Assuming the train was going around and 40mph and weighs 180 tons it would have 26 Mega Joules of kinetic energy. Modern MBTs can easily survive that kind of force considering they can deflect armor piercing rounds with around the same amount of energy.

Not entirely, there is one point in the single player where you can get on the back of a train that only has 2 flatbeds attached to it and blow up the train using a rocket launcher. And if you factor in GTA:SA, you could drive the trains up to a certain speed and it would derail.

That scene always struck me as unrealistic. If you see a train hit a car it crumples it up and then pushes it along, and a car is just 1-2 tons and made of stamped sheet metal. A tank is 60 tons and has several inches of armor.

While this is exaggerated, I feel like people here severely overestimate any kinda tank and underestimate the force behind a train in motion. No matter if you put a 80 ton abrams in this situation. A 200+ tons locomotive impacting at full force will basically disintegrate anything that isn't grounded with proper foundation or is much, much heavier. And no, destroying the front of the locomotive won't bring it's already built movement to an instant stop either, so that's useless.

Tanks have very thick hulls that can withstand immense pressure and punishment. A British centurion tank survived a nuclear detonation being placed 500 meters from the detonation point. the train may have much more mass in motion but it is going to hit a very dense object. I highly doubt the tank would explode. It would be badly damaged but the train would be a derailed mess.

To quicky add to that, the centurions hull wasn't penetrated by the blast and was intact. The damage caused by the blast was it's paint was completely burnt off, it was detracted and some plates were torn off. The tank still started up and drove off.

It's a very impressive feat and it shows just how durable we have made tanks in recent times...pressures released by nuclear explosions can rival the equivalent of being miles underwater, most other human made objects just wouldn't survive that.. depends on the energy carried by the shell - the impact, if you will. Think how much force it takes to tip over an item as large as a train - the shell could be lifted by one strong person, and is sharp. If it tore through the train rather than stopping dead, it wouldnt even impart all the energy it had if the shell struck and exploded it would slow the train and badly damage it but even that wouldn't stop it moving.
