If it wasn't for you and Caesar Milan idk what I'd be doing. Caesar gave me a foundation and a comfort around most dogs. It wasn't until a decade later I got an aggressive unsocialized Amstaff from the pound and then I found myself lost again. Your videos really helped my confidence grow even more allowing me to go on proper walks again. That snap and fake release leash method helped a lot. I was able to get another dog too! Frankie is still a jerk to other jerk dogs but he's come a LONG way. Thanks again man.

I've finally been able to get my 70lb pitty around other dogs, my friend has two dogs one close to his size pitt and one a little more slight of build. He has been so much more calm after he gets to play with them and run free in a fenced yard. Both my friends dogs are female and mine is male. The bigger dog will often show her teeth and nip at him because he's still not getting that he is too big to be pushing everyone around and those corrections have been so good for him, he only got a small scratch once and now understands not to push her around. The other dog brings more of his energy and rough play when they run around and she will just ram into him as they are running but he's just so big he doesn't even move. Picking our battles we really let him know he can't be rough with every dog so he gets the corrections with the bigger more cranky dog and then gets to be rough with the younger more playful dog. All of this is thanks to your video and being able calm my dog at doors and for meeting other dogs.

Great to see Bandit's progress! Like the additional video angle providing up close dog behavior! There may not have been a lot of action but this was still a great example of dogs being around each other/socializing without high levels of excitement. We have 3 GSD's. A 10 year old male (Zeus), a 2 year old male (Loki), and a 6 month old female (Freyja). Freyja is infatuated with Zeus. She will jump on him, bite at him, and bark incessantly at him. She gets in such a zone that clapping your hands or yelling HEY in a loud voice has no effect on her. If we try to grab her she just runs away. She doesn't do it all the time but it happens often enough to be really annoying. She'll even stand on the other side of the doggy door and bark wildly. It's a miracle that Zeus hasn't given her a hard bite. At 10 years old he doesn't want to be bothered with a puppy. We're about at our wits end as to how to get her out of that zone.

My Akita is only 4 months old and I’ve heard you say in a recall training video to not train that method until they are at least 9 months old. He’s very smart and will listen when training around the house and yard but of course just as you’ve said “that’s not real life”. When we go on walks he does well not pulling, however if we pass people or another dog he goes bonkers. Like all of our training went right out the window. I do understand he’s still young, mainly I want to correct him jumping up on people and going nuts around other dogs in an age appropriate way.

Thank you for the way you explain and describe. Being clear with how our energy and timing of correction is important. And that they need repetitive corrections for it to get through them. It comes down to us as humans to follow through and keep our dogs in check. Like you said, our society isn't the "wild" and we need control of our dogs. Sharing this video with coworker (boarding/daycare kennel in Raleigh NC). We have new staff that are not as educated with dog behavior and they need to see a well explained training method. My 5yo German shepherd does great at doggie day camp around all size dogs. However, he’s got extreme leash reactivity when I take him on walks and we approach any dog. He practically does somersaults in the air jumping, barking and lunging to go after them. We’ve been practicing loose leash walking daily using a gentle leader and he does ok but all bets are off when there’s another dog. Any video you can recommend that might help?

I don't know what I can do, have a 6mnth GSD. As GSD dogs go, and puppies go, he is mellow, doesn't bark, loves fetch, thinks he's a lap dog. When I go for walks, take him to the pet store, Walmart, doesn't bark, anyone can approach me and him, I don't worry about people petting him, he's easy to correct when walking, he's just chill. BUT! I have had to have some repairmen come to the house, and when my brother came to my house for the first time - my mellow easy going Jax about eats the front door to eat them. I have to lock him up the other day, in the garage so he didn't eat the heater repair guys. I take him to my daughters, she lives in a sober living house with many people, he loves everyone, plays with the kids, won't leave my grandson's side. My daughters boyfriend lives in a mens sober living with several others, and he babysits my grandson and Jax, never have a problem. Everyone at both houses want him and fight over playing with Jax. He's fine, but at home he is fiercely protective. Even with my brother, he stayed between us, and he wouldn't let my brother touch him. He isn't neutered yet, have an appt next week, but everyone in GSD world is bagging on me for getting him neutered so young, another story, but I don't know if he is just protecting me and his territory cause it's his home, or its a testosterone thing with men. I live in rural Utah and I don't get many visitors, so how do I socialize that in the home. I really don't have people that I can invite over to try and socialize him. He barks nonstop, and lunges at whomever, and will bump them away from me. HELP! Maybe you already have a video for this and I just haven't run across it yet?

Also love the new camera angle always seeing what the dog is doing. A friend’s Kelpie planted my dog to the ground as my dog had a dominant stance over his shoulder when they first met. It was the best thing! My dog got a bit of shock. They ended up playing fine, but the kelpie set the rules. So my boy is like yep, want to meet and play, does play bows and then when the dogs make that first contact, just has that moment, stiffens up, and does that dominant thing. It’s so off-putting as it looks like a precursor to a fight and just before he seemed like he wanted to play. Should I just “hey” “clap” and correct it? Bandit’s improvement is amazing!

My dog is 2 (and 75lbs) and over-corrects the submissive border collie/heeler x (55 lbs) in the house that hes going at him on two back feet, growling and snarling. No broken skin, but I'm afraid if it goes to far, that there would be broken skin. This dog needs the correction tho, always nipping at his front legs or back legs and doesnt know when to stop. He's a bit of a resource guarder, in the way of the other dog takes it Jacksons going after him. All this happens in a split second, even during play. I also use alot of your methods with my boy too. I'm watching all your videos that equate tho his recent behavior change, nothing since last year, when we moved in.

Hard to get him to listen in those instances, also I am a bit afraid to correct in pubic, here the whole country is positive only…or just about. I have to have him on a long line because I don’t trust that he will run up to a large unknown angry male dog and get bit badly. I don’t know what more to do than follow your tips. Ok, you wanted questions: my 10 month neutered standard poodle can be at the dog park & some days, no issues, plays great etc., Yesterday, he played with a couple dogs with no issues, they (both neutered males) left right when another dog, a smaller fixed female, came in the dog park. My dog went into hyperdrive instant humping machine, grabbed her by back of neck & just went at her. My husband & I several times tried to get him, he see us coming, he’d dash away, then go right back at her again, humping away. The owner finally grabbed his dog, held her off the ground (she was a large Labrador) and then we were finally able to grab our dog and drag him - literally - away. The most embarrassing time ever. He goes to doggie daycare couple times a week & I asked if this behavior had been showing up & they said he has been showing signs but not like what I described. What are physical indicators that this behavior will start? I did not see any warning at all! Is it the male/female thing? Also the 10 month age? What do you do when you’re trying to take him for a evening potty/walk, gentle leader on, dog coat on, booties on ( it IS 10 degrees with 2 feet of snow), but he’s not sitting as he’s being told (and usually does) but instead he’s doing what I’d call “death stare” at me? Will not do anything I’m telling him to do? What I eventually did was strip him of winter gear and physically dragged him by his collar, again not obeying me, back in the house and put him in a time out (leashed him to my husband). Half hr later we tried again and had a “so-so” potty walk. But holy cow, he’s being a real pill this week!

So are some pups just aggressive or is it behavior like this unchecked? I have an 18week American bulldog and she has been donating my dogs once she got comfortable in our home. Got her at 9 weeks. When meeting our dogs and other new dogs she acts scared at first but will build up to this over the top play and just ignoring dog cues. I will now put a stop to it in our home and while we are out. Do some dogs never learn to be with other dogs though? Just wondering at what point if any you know the dog is reactive or has a prey drive or something? I just don't want to end up with my dog hurting someone elses dog. We will start with setting firm boundaries like you've shown with this dog. It gives me hope.

Dear Joel, My 1 year old female GSD loves barking and chasing other dogs at the dog park. She barks to get them to run, so she can chase them. She is not barking out of aggression, she is just very vocal and she doesn't get into fights. I think it is very similar to Bandit's situation, in that her doggy manners are not appropriate "for the society we live in". I try to mark and correct at the dog park as much as I can, but my follow through is a little lacking. When I try to go and grab her, she runs around and avoids me. I have really tried to enforce the follow through, but after me (and my partner) chased her around the dog park for 15 minutes (literally) with no success, we had to finally give up. She will cannot be caught. What do I do? She does not bark excessively outside of the dog park, so I am unable to set up a learning experience for her that can translate to the dog park. Really struggling here. BTW Thank you for all your tips, they are super effective! We do all of the doorway stuff and she is a rockstar outside of when she sees another dog.

How would I correct my younger dog (11 month old treeing walker coonhound) who keeps bugging my older dog (3 year old Labrador Retriever) and when my Lab had enough of the little dog(the coonhound nips and jumps), he corrects him, just as what Bailey in this video showed; however, my coonhound thinks it's a signal to play and then he imitates the correction by hopping on my Lab and then they get rough until I break it up?

My 1 year old Pembroke Corgi gets super crazy with certain dogs immediately, but the other 98% of his friends/dogs that come into our park he has a super high tolerance with and never reaches that point of almost “irritability” with no matter what they do to him while playing. Is it just a matter of “I can’t expect him to be best friends with everyone he meets” or should I be correcting him the times he gets too crazy with that handful of certain dogs?

How do you go about letting your dog meet other dogs on leash on a walk? My 2 year old pit likes to get right in the other dog's face and stand stiffly for a second then she tries to lunge and I feel like that's where the conflict comes because the other dog feels challenged or threatened..
@monique7211

Your dog doesn't have to meet dogs on a leash at all. It sounds like it's better if she doesn't. The leash can add unwanted tension to to a greeting, making your dog act out in response. Plus you don't know how the other dog will react to yours. I personally don't do leash greets at all.

Joel has many great reactive dog leash videos. The key is a loose leash, you're not nervous, and you call your dog away or back at the 1003 mark. If you wait till 1005, that's when things happen that don't need to happen. If she gets stiff, you guys just walk away from the other dog, re-approach, want to say hi to your friend, if same thing happens, do a 180 degree turn again, and try again another day. Joel also has awesome videos with the muzzles on. Have to get your dog used to a muzzle over like a week's time before you think about actually using it for real. This is so they are more likely to accept it, won't try to get it off, and they might actually get excited when they see it because they know they get to be around other dogs without fear of attack, provided the other dog has a muzzle on too. Hound of the Baskervilles muzzles - can still bark, drink, pant, and eat. Never want to make them feel bad about wearing it either.

What happens if your dog (collie) is so focused to pounce they won't listen to your clap?? My dog thinks all dogs are a threat and I'm trying my hardest to social her...I need to be in control I was thinking using one of those really long puppy leashes 🤔

I think what helped me the most thanks to this channel, was that you have to look at training overall, not just the issue you are trying to correct. I have a 3yo pit that has fence reactivity that was literally dangerous. I was searching for help on fence reactivity and found this channel. Realized she was really barely trained at all. I don't think I watched a single video from Joel dealing with fence reactivity specifically. Instead I started doing ALL the methods in his videos. Plus added consistent walks not just free run in the yard for exercise. Got both of my dogs out in the world. Used the hey and clap for ANY unwanted behavior. The fence reactivity went away. Like. A. Miracle. What I'm trying to say is work on loose leash walking and the door method. Teach a place or bed command. Work on a strong recall with the go get method or the long leash method Joel demonstrates. Get your dog exercised and play with other dogs if possible. Do those things and I bet the focus issue will get better. And when you do the correction for it, the dog will def pay more attention to you. You have to put the time in, but it's actually fun, and his methods work. I hope that helps and makes sense!

@@asp1213 Yes, I've put in all training myself started from scratch and she is so much better than she was....she is almost perfect in all ways apart from socialising, she won't attack but if she feels there getting to much she will defend and sometimes she is so over energised she will go for a dog for no reason, that's when I panic and shout NO but she is so fixated on that lunging she doesn't listen...I will try just leash walking more, not free range playing with her in the park twice a day. Thank you so much for replying I will definitely take on board your advice

@@vickyfibe5340 reactivity is not easy, believe me I hear you. It's also hard not to panic or get flustered, I know that too! Try to work on the leash correction as opposed to a no correction. Setting up the walk with the doorway method. And unfortunately just do it over and over again. I've recently started a group obedience class just at the petsmart. Really just because it's getting the dog out on a leash and around other people and dogs. It's made a difference in our daily walks believe it or not. Good luck and keep watching and practicing. It does get better with time and consistency!

My dog is a high energy nutty 12 month old Doberman named Ruby who plays well with most dogs. Usually with other dogs that match her play style which is rough. However, When another dog rushes up to her she gets anxious and hackles up and starts to fight. Other times at daycare she will play well with dogs she knows and gets along with, but a 3rd dog will try to play with them and even correct Ruby thats when she doesn’t like being corrected and gets upset…..help!

Is it unrealistic for a 5 lb yorkie and 37 lb poodle to safely play together? My daughters dog, Coco yorkie and my dog Gracie poodle both1 yr old love each other, tails wag but my dog play is too rough with little dog. Can that be crrected or is it normal play that should be allowed with same size dogs? Thanks !

We have 2 acres. My2yr old bordoodle is wonderful with recall when he has a 30ft. lead on. He knows when I take it off and hears my call and does not come. I go out and try to catch him. Get him cornered, which is super hard....takes a LONG time. I do your method with holding the collar and saying no very sternly. His ears go back and seems to know he is in the wrong. But continues to do this almost every time he is off lead. What do you recommend I do?
@robinrutherfordcost4748
@robinrutherfordcost4748 2 жыл бұрын
He's not ready to be off lead yet. He has to earn that privilege by behaving and/or he can drag a long line so it's easier to get a hold of him or step on the leash. Suzanne Clothier's Automatic Check In will help a lot too. As soon as you say the dog's name, that head should whip around. Be sure you're not calling him then the fun is over, leash goes on and you leave. Sometimes as a reward you can say Go Play! Try to just get the dog without calling them to you when it's time to leave or go back in the house. You can also try 2 leads - his regular leash that you take off but the long line is still attached. This is when it's just you and the dog working on recalls and playing, not with multiple dogs - again that's earned. Wanna say Hi to your friend? Etc. Don't want leashes when there are multiple dogs, unless you have the dog close to you as a time out - if he's the aggressor and the other dog needs a break too.

Hi Mr Beckman,I have introduced an intact 1 yr old Rottweiler (he is being neutered next week) to my two spaniels (1 is 12 and neutered the other is intact 3 Yr old) and neither are aggressive. My problem is the Rottweiler will not leave the old spaniel alone,continuously licking,sniffing and smothering him. There has been minor fights between the Rottweiler and the younger spaniel but nothing serious. My question is how can I get the Rottweiler to leave the old Spaniel in peace.....any help would be gratefully received. Many thanks in advance

I have a one year old standard poodle who sometimes plays with a boxer pit mix. The boxer likes to play very rough. My dog is okay with it up to a point. If the play goes on for an extended period of time the boxer will start slamming my dog to the ground and lay across him so that my dog cannot get up. At this point my dog looks panicked as he flails about trying to get free. I think the play should be stopped at that point, but the other owner thinks that I am over reacting. My dog is very happy go lucky. I don't want these sorts of interactions to negatively affect him. Am I right to break it up?
