Oh, I have been waiting for this for a long time. I am a Santa Cruz County native, and Davenport is a short five-mile drive. Seeing the old cement company plant is surreal. It continued to be used until 2010, when Union Pacific ceased operations on the branch line after Cemex, a Mexican cement company, shut its doors on the site. Chiggen did return to Santa Cruz in July 2014 to run on the Santa Cruz, Big Trees, and Pacific Railway based out of Felton. We have been eager to see the engine return for a short visit in the future. However, the engine is now at the California Western, also known as the Skunk Train, in Fort Bragg, as that is also where Mr. Pappas is employed as the general manager of the railroad.
@legothomasgameАй бұрын
I will note that Chiggen did operate in Snoqualmie Washington for a few years at the Northwest Railway Museum. Around 2019 it went to California. I got a few Images of it running there. Should also be in the local paper.

This was an hour from me! I never ate there but I remember driving by it as a kid! I’m so glad to know it wasn’t scrapped. There was a Dairy along the same highway that also used to have a (somewhat larger) locomotive out front but I can’t remember where exactly, the location has since been demolished for more strip mall garbage.

I've been to Santa Cruz a bunch of times! I think I actually saw the Chiggen after it had been restored once several years ago on the Santa Cruz, Big Trees & Pacific Railway. I don't think I ever got to go to Pollardville, unfortunately, but I have seen what I think are some of the old tracks that No. 1 and 2 ran on. They might have been different tracks though, I'll have to look on my next trip out there.

I had the awesome privilege to be able to ride a passenger train pulled by the Chiggen, as a birthday present a couple years back when it made a visit to the California Western Railway (Skunk Train) to fill in for the Mikado 45, which was being restored at the time and thus wouldn't be available for the Month of Steam the Skunk Train likes to do once a year. I love saddle tank engines, so I was honestly happier to be pulled by the Chiggen than the Mikado. It was a wonderful experience.

I am so disappointed to hear that Pollardville is no longer in business. It sounds like it would've been a fun place to visit. Glad the locomotive was saved and restored at least, but I kinda wish its days advertising a chicken restaurant/ghost town weren't over.

0:07 The first 20 big boys were actually equipped for passenger service too lol, could’ve used a better example. Don’t forget that the UP Challengers were used in freight and passenger service. Even the 9000 Class 4-12-2s were used in passenger service if necessary (I have a photo of this in a book I own).

Let's not forget that Colonel Sanders got his start by selling fried chicken to railroad crews, so there is definitely a relationship between American locomotives and chicken dinners. An underrated steam engine. This video should help with some more country-wide and international popularity.

Some older steam locomotives were decorated with antlers from deer, moose, caribou, etc. while some had small golden statues of eagles perched on top of the headlights with wings spread outwards. Perhaps #2 could have a small chicken statue on top of its headlight and its nickname scrawled somewhere, maybe on the boiler front a la Big Boy style.

The issue with the idea of cooking in it, is its an oil fired engine, so you can't easily fire it with a food safe type of wood ect for a short duration as has been done with coal fired locomotives and quick to cook dishes. A chicken is also not quick to cook, so you'd need to use the expensive fuel for a long time, even just idling the locomotive in place it becomes a cost prohibitive stunt, much less a menu item. Crews back in the day where just used to being covered in and inhaling the toxic soot, so thought less of having some of it on their food, sometimes rationalizing it was more worth having something hot to eat than something clean, but even then it was rare, normally meals on the go where just pre-prepared and eaten cold if an actually kitchen wasn't available (as it commonly was a dedicated role/carriage for track work trains, and available at stations for logistics crews and drivers on shorter regular routes).

The Pollardville sign I am extremely Familiar with. Why? Because it’s basically home turf. I live in San Joaquin county, specifically just outside of both Stockton & Lodi. There have been many times I have seen that sign, standing all alone, and I never thought much about it. For years and years I never knew what that tower was about, but now I know that there was once a locomotive right in front of that sign. Also, I was born in 2006. So I basically never got to see the Locomotive named Chiggen. Lastly, if you want to see the Pollardville sign, it is still standing. Just go south of Eight mile road on the Frontage road east of Hwy 99, you will soon see it. I NEVER KNEW THAT THERE WAS SUCH HISTORY SO CLOSE TO HOME.
