Herding dogs are the best dogs. If you have time with them. Smart. They recognize tension and act (if trained) exactly as trained. They're loyal to the pack and will submit almost instantly (if trained). Loving, yes absolutely.

4:04 - He mentions all four breeds, but I wonder why he's using collies and kelpies here, and not Aussies or cattle dogs?
@JuJuBea1619 жыл бұрын
+PlainsPup That's probably just the stock he had at the time. "Cattle dogs" are picked by their working traits and not so much the pedigree.
@brandoe776 жыл бұрын
Lots of people including myself use border collies for cattle
@ferlykth5 жыл бұрын
he probably uses border collies with strong cattle working BCs in the pedigree. collies were originally developed for sheep but can work just about any type of stock, depends on what the dog works best on. australian shepherds were bred for mostly cattle but can also work any kind of stock. they can be very pushy on stock though, up and personal which makes them not so great on duck and chicken but again, depends on the dog. it’s just a matter of preference.
@feelnrite5 жыл бұрын
I would say they are breeds that he connects with. I have heelers and don't know if I could work a border collie. I understand heelers and they understand me.

I have trained my blue healer to herd ducks her commands are ''ok'' thats when you want her to go and herd and you point to the duck or animal for her to herd then she has '' gentle'' when she slows down. And ''bring them to me'' were she herds them to me.

Ok I needed another dog for my pit bull because she was Lonely and I got a pit bull mix . Well as it got older I noticed it had the markings of a cattle dog . Half pit half cattle dog . When i would run he’d always nip at my ankles . Well I got two donkeys last year , I’m learning a lot about them but one thing I noticed is my dog wants to herd them . Like it’s in his DNA. The pit bull could care less but he’s always trying to move them . It’s really neat but annoying cause most of the time he’s just bothering them . But recently they keep trying to get out my front gate when I come in or leave . I’m running late trying to move them out the way and this morning im thinking hey this is what he’s breed for , I called him over and told him to move them , he looked at me like, are you serious? I said cowboy move them and he ran after them . He got them all the way across my yard then came back to me . It Still fascinated me . Now I’m looking for ways to train him to do it on command .

Does anyone know some good trainers because I have never owned a farm before and when I do have my own I would like to have a cattle dog but I do not trust myself to train my dogs.
@drawinglover46937 жыл бұрын
If you're not confident in training to this extent, maybe think about getting some horse riding lessosns? I know it may be a more manual way of doing things, but there are some horses and people that really do great as a team on the ranch! I believe it's alled Cattle penning(?) as for building confidence with your dog. get a young pup, not a year old or older all trained dog... (You could of course that would be your choice) but the dog may not bond with you the way it did it's trainer/owner before. and you may have a bit of trouble/unnecisarry work on your hands. Any way, just start with basic training, and perfect it first! You will need a solid foundation before you decide to move on to herding, or guarding or what ever you wish with your animal! Also German shepherds may also be a dog to research. they where first intended to be a herding dog, that's why "shepherd" is in the name, but are so intellagent and willing to work with you that you could train the dog to be virtually anything you want!! Just be sure to do your research on the dogs out there to see which is the best fit for you. Same with horses too. For horses though, I highley reccomend getting some riding experiance under your belt before you go on to riding a cattle/roping horse. I hope this is helpful?

Rosalee Gulley you can train your dog just fine dear. it's time hard work and patience. the dog already knows what to do, trust me...it's your naming of the actions and consistent reinforcement on schedule and CONSISTENCY

+caveman Versace like the cattle dog, they are a mix of many different breeds so they vary. it could also be a "mutt" kelpie. Dogs trained for working have no priority put on their pedigree, its the working traits that are important.
