Couple of things. You can see both of them from this video of Stahl from the side. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKCclmh9jdGMbs0. First, I commented on a different video but I will add it here. Physiologically we can lift our arms higher if we will rotate our arm before we lift it. Notice Stahl has the thumb of his throwing arm up toward the sky at the beginning of his throw. This allows us to lift our arm past the Humeral Greater Tubercle at the top of our Humerus. If you don't, the Tubercle runs into the scapula restricting the height that we can lift our arm. Second, the angle of release is not controlled by the arm but by the angle of the body. If you make the body enter the center at a slight angle, as you see Stahl doing at the 18 second mark of the video, then you have set up the angle that you talk about in this video. If you notice Stahl is not lifting his arm at this point, he is just setting an angle with his whole body. This same angle is maintained while he tightens his core and rotates around his right and into the block. He has the same angle just before release at 20 seconds. This allows him to get a solid flat block on his left so he can drive into his block and stay grounded and have a proper release angle. If the angle is not happening it is usually because the thrower is traveling into the center almost straight up and down with little to know angle. You can get a lot of linear momentum this way but you will have a difficult time getting lift.

Yeah I agree. Reaching lower with my off arm and thinking about that orbit out of the back helped establish a better angle with my body in the middle to get a better release angle. I’ve tried to think about angling just my body in the middle but it caused more problems than it fixed so I’ve been using these cues to work that without “working it”
@benjaminhunt51243 жыл бұрын
@@LifeofJY I get that. Some times it takes a specific cue to get us into the correct position.

This video was amazingly helpful. I've always taken the scientific approach to throwing with bringing in physics and such but the part about how an object in rotation does not show force until 90 degrees later was quite interesting. your orbit and release look so much better with that cue in mind. I cannot wait to try out this in practice.

I hope we will have a video of the discus competition of this last weekend. You seem to be in great shape. I’m so happy for you after all the back problems you had. the Olympic Games are within your reach. Your Belgian fan 😏

Yeah, I can definitely see what you mean by how having the disc behind would make you release early. It looked like on some of your last 2.5k throws you had it behind and your high point was in the wrong position. Each time your high point was wrong you release early. Awesome video man, I'll try some of these things for my next meet Saturday. Aiming for 45m in discus!

Yeah, I was feeling good so I got excited and was rushing a bunch of throws leaving the disc behind.

Do you ever think about trying to rotate faster in the middle of the circle or should you relax and focus on other cues?
@LifeofJY3 жыл бұрын
If I want to go faster I usually try to think about getting down to the middle quicker and get to a good stand throw position so I can hit it quick. When I just think about going faster my technique usually suffers then it’s worse than a 60% Effort technical throw

Do you have any tips on how to stop dragging the discus and keep it high?
@ximenamoreno42483 жыл бұрын
Tips for not being afraid to go all out? I seem to slow down and stop the flow of my spin around the middle of the ring because I’m afraid of falling.
@LifeofJY3 жыл бұрын
Thousands of slow throws working on balance so that you’re comfortable in the ring and eventually the speed comes. Need to be able to go slow comfortably before fast feels comfortable. Also pay attention to the direction you feel like you’re falling and what may cause that with your spin. Usually being off balance on the finish starts with being off balance out of the back of the circle.

@@LifeofJY Thanks! Today at practice I threw a 36.8 as a high school senior with the 4k . Now I just need to work on the finish after I throw and getting my left leg over my right to land in.

Does this cue make sense to JY or any coach who is on here “when in power position that the left arm pulls the right hip around into the block”
@LifeofJY3 жыл бұрын
To me the hip turning in the middle is the most important position and should be it’s own thing. The off arm helps add chest stretch and balance when timed up properly but I don’t think about it to move the hip. Although if it works for you to turn better in the middle then it’s worth thinking about probably
