We spent some time training our Great Pyrenees puppies to learn to guard our chickens. We give our livestock guardian dogs supervised training sessions with our chickens to learn to protect them and not attempt to play with the hens. Our Great Pyrenees puppies also benefit from learning from our adult livestock guardian dogs.

I love my Pyrenees. I’ve been breeding for 20 years and for the very first time I actually kept a puppy. Her name is Roxy and she’s 11 weeks old. She was the runt and mom rejected her so I bottle fed her and we bonded. She still has the guardian in her. When she sees our Barbados, she instantly perks up and she will sit and watch them for hours

We lost some chickens to coyotes...in the daytime...so we bought a lgd, a puppy that is maremma sheep dog and anatolian shep. mix....he is now, 5.5 mos. old and is in a fenced area with our new young buck goat that will be our sire for our nannies next year...these lgd breeds are amazing and we are learning on the way to train him for eventually being out with our nanny goats, some of our cows and our horses...all training tips appreciated!

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss of the chickens. Those coyotes can be ruthless. That maremma should definitely do the job to guard your livestock moving forward. It's been our experience that our Great Pyrenees really haven't needed any training to guard our goats and pigs and I'd assume they'd do just as well with cattle and horses. They just need some intentional training to do well around chickens. I'd assume that Maremmas are similar, having watched some other KZbin channels that have them. One of my favorite channels to watch has a Maremma, it's called Gold Shaw Farm. Check it out if you haven't already!

To move that building you might consider using steel pipe or good round post and just roll it to the new spot. I moved a 16 by 32 foot building that way took about half a day to move it a hundred yards.

I thought about trying that but the coop has posts on all four corners that stick down about a foot below the frame so it would be difficult to roll

Recently seen a whole bunch of in shape Great Pyrenees that go over 200 pounds. Many from my area run from the 135 to 160 range ( in shape). Some a little heavier but out of shape. Some smaller but anything 125 or over is still a decent size. For our purposes though.....Bigger is better w in reason. My 8 month old puppy is over 29 and a half inches at the shoulder and we'll over 100 pounds. Will get an exact weight in the next week or so. My other Pyr protected us and our house on several occasions RIP. He alerted, ran off a potential prowler and destroyed a couple coyotes on another occasion. Our new big puppy Bear is well on his way to guarding. Grew up w a huge kennel right behind my house of German Shepherd and Rottweiler,s so alot of that training I did w them has become very useful w Bear. He's my 2 year old sons Christmas present and is super good w him. Follows him everywhere and does his best to protect him. A very fine and gentle breed

THis is great. One question - what do you do if your Great Pyr does start showing a little stalking/chasing behavior? What's your mechanism for discouraging bad behavior? --- and what if it is persistent?
@WillowRidgeAcres

Thank you for watching! It has been our experience that a calm but assertive verbal correction works to redirect their attention and corrects the behavior after a few times. Generally, the Great Pyrenees breed does not respond well to harsh correction.

Hello from Kentucky! I just discovered your channel today while trying to do research on the Great Pyrenees breed. We have a 5 acer homestead, we garden, have chicken, guineas, turkeys, cows, pigs, and are in need of a true livestock breed. Love your video, I just subscribed and hit the bell. Going to do a little binge watching. I have a couple questions, I saw where it says new video's each week but the newest one I can find is from a month ago, how often do you all upload new videos?, so I will know what days to keep a eye out for them, and second question is about the breed, My husband knows a guy that has the breed, and he told my husband, that they do better in pairs, and he told my husband NOT to pet and cuddle them because then they wouldn't do their job, so now my husband thinks that if we get one, it can't be loved, hugged and petted....or I....lol...the animal lover will ruining it, that if it takes up with us, it will just be another pet and it wouldn't want to stay out with the animals and watch over them, but from what I see in your videos, that doesn't seem to hold true at all, but I am still unsure about the part that they do better in pairs, this part I could see maybe having some truth to it? what are your thoughts on this? I hope you see my comment, Thank you for your time, adorable family, farm, and animals, this channel has it all for me, new fan!

Hey Mylanda! 👋 Thank you for watching and subscribing! We haven't made a new video in about a month due to some family medical issues we have had to tend to. But we plan to upload our next video soon and get back on our weekly upload schedule of Tuesdays and Saturdays! To answer your questions about the Great Pyrenees breed, it has been my experience that there are two "schools of thought" when it comes to the breed. There are people who prefer to raise them with little to no human interaction and there are people who do give their dogs attention and affection. My experience has been that our dogs are still great livestock guardians and still rely on their instincts to guard and protect our animals, even with us spending daily time with them. Great Pyrenees that are raised with no human interaction can become aggressive towards humans, even their owners, and since we have 5 children, we did not want to risk our dogs becoming aggressive towards our kids. Our dogs will still bark and deter any human that approaches our property unless they are escorted onto the property by us, if we escort visitors onto the property... our dogs welcome them as if they are part of the family. That is the way we like it. They absolutely do better in pairs, however they can survive and do fine by themselves. We have a family friend with just one Great Pyrenees and he does well protecting their livestock. Thank you for the kind words! Stay tuned for new videos coming soon... hopefully this coming week!

That's called "the slow chase"...they should be completely ignoring the chickens. That's the goal with LGD pups and chickens. They should have been intercepted and corrected for any overt attention towards the chickens. Gloria could be easily trained off them also, she's not all that focused on them, but she too started with the slow chase. She's just quicker of foot than the pups. One short training session with each of them, one on one with a chicken, would get you where you are going. Have trained several different breeds and LGD pups with it and it works. I have pups working reliably with the free flock at 2-3 mo. of age.

Great video! I am considering getting a pair of pyrenees to guard my chickens, but how do they do around a rooster? I keep losing chickens to predators (fenced and everything) and want the dogs, but I have a rooster that is a little less than friendly.
@WillowRidgeAcres
@WillowRidgeAcres 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for watching! We don't have experience with our dogs around roosters, but I would say that with the right training around chickens the dogs will leave them alone just as they do the hens. But if the rooster tries to boss the dogs around the dogs would likely just growl and snap at the rooster to "put it in its place." That's the behavior I would expect. And that behavior is perfect as the Great Pyrenees should be the "alpha" of the pack. Our dogs will growl and snap at our goats if the goats attempt to eat their food during feeding time. They won't attack the goats but they'll do enough to let the goats know who's in charge. Hope that makes sense and helps! Might be good for your rooster to be put in check by the dogs from time to time anyway so he doesn't think he runs your farm 😁

I notice you don’t have a very grassy yard. Is this because of the dogs and chickens? Asking because we plan to get a GP soon to guard our chickens and are hoping they will help eliminate some of the mowing we have to do on our land. Our chickens are only cooped in a barn for the time being because of predators. Looking forward to having them loose to “mow” the lawn.
@WillowRidgeAcres
@WillowRidgeAcres Жыл бұрын
We don’t have much grass due to the rocky terrain we live in (we have just a couple inches of soil and then almost solid rock) and our goats eat any thing that is green. If you have better soil and no goats you should be fine.

What about the heat? How does the Texas heat affect them? Are they able to stay out on the farm alone? We have problems with raccoons and coyotes killing our chickens. We live 30 mins from our 40 acres. We have longhorns and chickens out there. We keep our chickens put up all the time, they have a chicken hut and outdoor run connected to the hut. Is she a purebred Great Pryrenees? Or is she a Pyrenees mix? If she is a mix with another breed, most other breeds' prey drive will be too high to be around poultry. Is she your only Great Pyrenees? If she hasn't had an adult Great Pyrenees around to show her the ropes, at 3 months old she's still a young pup and is likely too young to be left unattended with poultry. If that's the case, I would suggest giving her supervised times with the chickens for now until she's at least 6 months old. Hope that helps!

Hello Gail! Thanks for watching! We can only speak from our own experience, and we have had all of our Great Pyrenees dogs since they were puppies and had the opportunity to train them early. However, it has been our experience that the Great Pyrenees breed relies heavily on instincts to do their job as a livestock guardian. As long as you have a pure-bred Great Pyrenees, instinctively they have a low prey drive and high guardian instincts, so I would say with some intentional supervised training, a 1 year old Great Pyrenees can be trained to do well with chickens. However, if your dog is not pure-bred, you'd have to consider the instincts and tendencies of the other breed that are mixed in. Hope that helps!

Yeah you won't want your Great Pyrenees puppies chasing the chickens. You'll want to correct that behavior while they are young.

This video was pretty unsatisfying. Sorry. How do you correct the puppies from playing or stalking with the livestalk? What is it that you do specifically? What is their daily routine exactly? Where do you keep them? How do you feed them? How do your older dogs correct them? What specifically do you do to train them? That's the video I was looking for. If you're gonna do a video and call it a "training video" I would have expected it to focus on your puppies and your processes. This video was well over 60% focused on your faces and you talking about your farm. Which, while plesant enough is not what brought me, and I'm sure others, to you. I don't care about that. Sorry. I noticed you're asking for subscribers so I took the time to tell you this. There's no reason to follow anyone if the content isn't living up to the title. People follow farming/homesteading channels to learn how to do things via instruction. Not to keep up with what your wife hopes you'll do in the Spring. All the best.
