Sooo many pole vaulters are ex gymnasts... Usually the problem is that gymnastics is a short person's sport.

.. But yes most X- Gym- are a bit short.. But if you work on there run..& teach them how to plant && Get the grip up...probably 11. Ft..12 is Max- height... YA. ! You got to work on the run ... It takes a while.. They usually have nice tops..all The gymnastics.. I'm good at the run part.. It's difficult to teach the take- off.. Middle part...I was like a cat & a natural... Though I never had a actual Coach till years out of high school... So ii had 2 reastart- everything.. & My Coach was from North Carolina with a Speech inpedament- hearing disability since bearth. 2. Much Penisiline as a child... & I'm not a good listener....it helped being around old high school guys & World class vaulters... You look at them..I say to yourself.. If they can do it so can I. ...but it's not that easy...I got my grip up on a 15-09... Grip 15-03...05... Probably cleared- 16-06 a lot..few 17-07... 18 1 once.. Scared out of my mind.. I'm actually a scared of height s.. ,,, but if you some what master all phases of the vault it is quite - fun...but it is rough if your my night..5-09..Now 5-07 at age 65..66... It's good to have speed.. But you have to know how to use it ., or it can be a big block.. I'm good at fixing jumpers runs...The rest is drills.. N..being like a cat.. Problem with a cat.. He..she..wants to turn over.. .. I guess inPv you want to try to stay up there for a little while.. & People just want to finishe to fast.. Like a cat.. They just want to get turned over- & on the ground.... I've eatin The ground a few times but I know how to roll...saved me a few times.. My friend Chuck- would say You Go up 15 ft & come down 15 feet.. I've ran into the standard s x2 at Santa Monica college . & They where not screwed in the cement... So I teetered tottered twice.. & have been at twice at OXY College n Saw Asian kid out of U. Cla hugg a Standard x2 different years... I was sitting watching with old Cal- Tech- Pasadena Coach. I said I bet he huggs The standard again... Sure enough he did ... It's a learned exspierirnce.. Yes it's good to be tall...but tall n No speed... Idk. You need some speed...

back in the 80's I was letting some of the girls on the track team polevault with me. Coach said that there was no way a woman's shoulder could do it. Here we are in current year and the olympic women are competing at a higher level than most high school mens athletes. So many memories, thanks Gracie for showing how much fun it is, and you looked EXACTLY like how my friends in the 80's did as I was teaching them. Guys would get frustrated and swear, the girls would launch and giggle... my best 'student' cleared 8'6" at practice... you are up there with them.. For the record, I was only clearing 14', no where near what your friend Tate could do.. just to add a couple layers of fear. Those poles EXPLODE when they break sometimes, and when you run up on a training pole and forget to jump, you can end up holding one end of the pole and standing on the other in the box. That is a moment of problem solving I don't wish on anyone.. (I jumped back up the runway and landed on the grass next to the track)

Yeah, there are very very few sports out there where it is physically beyond the strength limits of a female athlete. The technique is what counts for most. Gymnastics is one of those where the athletes tend to specialize in certain events and not others, because it plays to their strengths.

I used to pole vault and theres so much to think about when vaulting but props to Tate for keeping casual, light and fun without getting too technical. Also props to Gracie for giving it a try! Ok, I loved watching that. I am new at track and field, and despite pole vault NOT being part of a heptathlon, I tried pole vault for the very first time yesterday evening. So much fun. Awesome. When I made a few good jumps, I was like "What did I do now?" and "IHold the pole even higher??" - I had only six steps on the run up. But they made me carry the pole at my hip right from the start, just like the pros - but I think the way you did was probably better. I managed half the height of what you did (btw, AWESOME you!) but then I am almost double your age and not a gymnast. I totally love the pole vault - felt like a kid again 🤩

Back in University in Trondheim I was mostly doing rock climbing but I joined the gymnastics team to get relevant training in wintertime (no indoor rock gyms in 1980!). Every year the track&field group organized an open decathlon (we had ~150 participants!), I took part twice so those are the only times I have ever done the pole vault. The first year I passed 3.00m (i.e. 10') but failed on the next height (3.30), the year after I finagled slightly different steps so I got to try (and clear) 3.10. The pole vault is _very_ difficult, it probably didn't help that we had to jump using a completely stiff metal pole with zero bounce in it, lots of people failed to clear the same height they had just done in the high jump. 😞 All that said, it definitely helps to have lots of upper body strength as well as good proprioception, but to really succeed you also need world class speed.
@MrMezmerized7 ай бұрын
Damn, 150 participants. That must have been so much fun (with a decent timetable). And good recruiting for the Trondheim athletics club. 3.10m is good with a stiff pole for an outsider.

@@MrMezmerized The way it worked was that everyone started each day with running, then 3 tech events rotated groups of 50, before the final run for all. The final 1500 was really nice, it allowed me to loosen up a lot of sore muscles!

@@graciekramer14Sorry, I'm a paraplegic so I'm kinda dumb with legs/feet stuff. What exactly does that mean, if you don't mind explaining?
@vagirl197 ай бұрын
@@LordBigSlimeso if you think of it as a motion versus position, toes flexed is pulling them up closer toward the front of your leg(shin) and toes extended(“pointed”) is pushing them away from your leg or toward the ground. Which is the one dancers and gymnasts are used to. Also known as dorsiflexion and plantar-flexion, plantar-flexion is the toes pointed and extended or “planted” into the ground and dorsiflexion is the opposite motion.

How would someone get involved in pole vaulting? I'm from rural NC, I grew up with race cars, football, baseball and basketball. The weirdest sport we had isn't even legal, let alone in the Olympics.

There are pole vaulting clubs all across the country. Usually kids try it at their school first and if they're more interested they join a year round club to get competitive. There are a few in NC.

High school track and field, and it usually has to be a bigger school since its a niche sport with a lot of liability. Smaller schools won't build the pit. My friend vaulted in high school, then Div I, and coached HS later.
