Steven is such a delight! I have no interest in climbing at all, but this video made me smile and I learned something. And I kept being in love with the interaction between Steven and Alayna. Just as happened with the pole dance class. I think this is your strength! I love all the videos you do by yourself too, but this is next level. I think it's because you bring out the best in people. Thank you for that! Lots of love, Marieke ❤

This was such a helpful video for a fellow climber! I'm a bit worse grade-wise but I feel like the tips that Steven gave are very useful for my climbing as well. So cool to see what a coaching session at this level of climbing could look like! And I loved the banter, it was entertaining and educational at the same time. ☺

So cool to see Steven on video. He’s obliviously very skilled at climbing but he has a great sense of communication that I admire.

It feels so humanising and kinda helpful in a way to see you get kinda scared for a bit and then manage to breathe and take yourself through it, I love climbing and never expect my anxiety to hit me when I'm up the wall, but it does and it hits real hard sometimes so it's really reassuring to see that that's probably just totally normal. Also I feel like that commitment joke comes up so much when me and my mate are climbing so that was hilarious. Amazing video as always, thank you to you and anyone else involved for bringing us the great content ❤🔥💛

Best hobby I could have picked up. I'm now taking better care of myself than I ever have before, purely to help myself improve in climbing.

14:59 figuring out the essential difference between full dynamic movement and the deadpoint: hips in then stand. Great to have noticed since the next handhold is carved in such a way to need precision and is not positive enough to allow much physical compensation.

Alayna, most gyms dont have v11 lols Maybe a few but v8 or v9 as they are plenty hard. That jump to v10 or harder is real (and costly cause you cannot have too many routes overlapping for a given area of bouldering. If no one is climbing the highest grades, why use up your precious gym space.)

Question for climbers in the chat - would it be realistic to try climbing/bouldering with absolutely no upper body strength? I'm curious to try it, but I've never been able to do press ups, let alone anything else. Would I build strength as I went along?
@ttumasanon Жыл бұрын
yes, as a beginner it's important to learn how to to use your legs and proper technique rather than strength
@MochaBloke Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! The easiest top rope climbs are less like pull-ups and more like climbing a ladder! Me and a bunch of friends (male and female) have successfully climbed despite having no strength foundation at all. You should go for it!

I used to take some rock climbing classes, and I miss it so much. Thanks for making me jealous but also for motivating me to try to find a cheap climbing gym. (Why are they so expensive? 😢)
@ST-vt4nu Жыл бұрын
I've been climbing for 6 months now and it's kinda nice to see Alayna have commitment issues and fear issues similar to mine. I could climb 6A's in my gym with ease if it wasn't for the fear factor (and me being 5'2 sometimes takes them up to a 6B lmao). I should try the breathing thing though! There's 3 6A's I'd like to finish on monday, I just need to commit to one move on each of them. My hight makes these moves a lot further than for other people, which makes it scarier to commit (I'm also dutch, so the average person is like 5'9 here).
@Bloxeh Жыл бұрын
Haha, I'm the same height as you and I sometimes wonder what tall people would say, when there was a copy of the climbs but upscaled. So thatthey get the same experience. Other than that, I'm telling myself "I get more climbing moves for my money" :) I did take a class specifically for small females (and I was one of the tallest people there) and it really helped me. Would totally recommend, if available!
@ST-vt4nu Жыл бұрын
@@Bloxeh There's currently one at my gym where the first move is so much harder because I can't keep my foot on the foothold for it haha. Before that one there was one where I couldn't reach the last hold from the place you were supposed to, making it 2 grades harder. My gym luckily sets climbs that are specifically for shorter people, but those often get under graded because tall people can skip half the hold. but sometimes they're harder if you're tall because you end up very bunched up. I don't think there would be a big market for a course like that here, since most people are so tall 😅I do feel like I've developed better climbing skill from not being able to cheat my way through anything though.
@Bloxeh Жыл бұрын
@ST-vt4nu That's true, good point! Tall and/or strong people get away with bad technique for quite some time in the gym. It's great that they have climbs for smaller people at your gym, that's very thoughtful. Do they have female route setters? I do like the kids section at my gym - some climbs are tough as nails and I'm experiencing the "bunched up" feeling for once :). Have you tried sport climbing? I don't know if it's a local thing, but routes flow for me much better, as the moves aren't as extreme that often. And I learned that I can do more moves than I thought I could originally when I was only bouldering. When being belayed I feel much safer. Good luck with your projects! You can do it! 🤞
@ST-vt4nu Жыл бұрын
@@Bloxeh thank you! Good luck to you as well. I've done some toproping, but in that gym the moves towards the end were all really far for me, so I wasnt even able to do the easiers routes, but that was before I started bouldering. I think my gym does have female routesetters, but they're pretty tall from what I've seen 😂
