In this short video you will see my London garden pet, a wild grey squirrel call Lucky who comes to visit me and demands food.
You will see how I gave him a grape and how the squirrel managed to eat the grapes, but Lucky does not like the grape's skin and he spits it out, very funny!
This Squirrel is so funny and cute monster and this video makes me laugh each time I am watching it.
About Grey Squirrels:
Grey squirrels were imported into the UK from North America in the Victorian era. Collectors, animal lovers and wealthy landowners brought them to the UK as curiosities. The first recorded introduction was at Hanbury Park In Cheshire in 1876.
Grey squirrels have rapidly spread and colonised much of mainland England with detriment 5 our wildlife, especially the native red squirrel, and to crops and tree species, as they can be damaging to woodlands, etc. and has contributed to the decline of red squirrels... therefore, it's illegal to relocate grey squirrels under The Invasive Alien Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019 and Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, as they're a non-native species. Instead, you can discourage them. Grey squirrels are attracted to gardens that have access to food and shelter.
Grey squirrels are classified as an invasive species and it is illegal to keep or release them. The red squirrel is included in Schedules 5 and 6 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 (WCA) which means that it is a protected species...
Why are squirrels a problem in the garden? Squirrels will happily eat their way through your garden, snacking on bulbs, flowers, trees, bird food and more. They'll even chew wooden decking and garden furniture, given half a chance.
Grey squirrels are active during the day, foraging for food in trees and on the ground - they often visit peanut feeders in gardens. In the autumn they spend time storing nuts to eat during the winter. Their nest, called a drey, is a compact, spherical structure...
Should you feed Squirrels:
Wildlife experts advise against it for several reasons. First, providing food may make them dependent upon humans and lead them to lose the ability to find their own food. Second, squirrels can become too comfortable around humans over time, and losing their natural fear of us could make them aggressive toward us.
If you find the grey Squirrel, accordingly to rhs.org.uk :
"Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act it is illegal to release non-indigenous animals into the wild, so any grey squirrels caught should be killed".... but I personally find it difficult to do... please, do comment me on this ...
Facts
The eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), also known, particularly outside of North America, as simply the grey squirrel, is a tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus. It is native to eastern North America, where it is the most prodigious and ecologically essential natural forest regenerator. Widely introduced to certain places around the world, the eastern gray squirrel in Europe, in particular, is regarded as an invasive species.
Squirrels and other animals may be attracted to your house / garden, because they have found a source of food there. This could be anything from bird feeders to food scraps in your garbage cans.
The species has spread rapidly and is now common across the UK, with the exception of north and western Scotland and some islands. There are an estimated 2.7 million grey squirrels in the UK and the population is continuing to grow.
Feeding:
Eastern gray squirrels feed mostly on nuts and acorns from oak, beech, walnut and hickory trees, as well as seeds, fruits, bulbs and flowers from other plants and trees. They will also eat frogs, insects, bird eggs and farm crops such as corn and wheat.
