Sooo I had a thought the other day... You know how the 2005 Christian Bale Batman's cape was made of a fibrous, meshy material which would become hard as steel when electricity was applied? Can that be replicated (or as close as) if you, say, combined Nitinol with Nichrome? Like a braid. Obviously it wouldn't be anywhere near as strong, but might yield interesting results. And we like interesting results.

You can use hot water to activate the SMA gently and evenly... For the training process: We found 500°C over ~15min to give good results. Any metal parts touching the SMA should be stainless; zinc plating seems to migrate into the Nitinol. The plaster idea is brilliant!

Thanks for introducing everyone to NiTinol (Nickel Titanium Naval Ordinance Laboratory). Irregular grain boundaries are one of the reasons for it's characteristics. The Japanese secured the patents from America over twenty years ago. They've used it to knit broken bones together, used it in dental implants, automatic louver springs for HVAC and the list goes on. The Navy started with CuNi and went from there back in the late 40's. There are several methods for cold working and heat treating if my memory serves me correctly.

The show with the hammer at the end gave me an idea for a nitinol timer: 1. Train nitinol wire to be a spring. 2. Hang a weight from nitinol wire. 3. Set up a button below the weight to run current through the wire for a set time. When the weight stretches the wire enough, it will depress the button, running current through the wire, raising it back up to its starting position. Simply record every time the button gets pressed. I'm not sure how you'd get the current to run long enough to raise it back up, but it would be interesting to see how the nitinol acts after repeated heating/stretching, as a function of how long it takes to push the button after a set time of heating.

NiTinol wire is used in dentistry. It forms the new rotary endodontic files that are used for root canal shaping as a part of root canal treatment. Shape memory is essential for navigating narrow root canal systems and roots with extreme curvature.
