That was my soul dog. I saw his picture in an encyclopedia as a kid and never got over it. This breed caught my interest too bust the SIZE

GREAT job guys!! We've had our Wolfhounds since 1965 and it is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences possible. They are unique and the epitome of total love and devotion but it comes with a real level of responsibility that has to be understood. Your Sky is a gorgeous girl with a sweet personality and lovely expression. THANKS again for your posting. It was excellent and really spot-on.

I have to be honest... I tend to be critical about Irish Wolfhound videos of this nature. This was the best ever! Topics on training and growth. Stairs... That was like reading my mind. I have been advising owners for years, to find a suitable place that has stairs and a wheel chair ramp. At first just climbing up the stairs and down the ramp eventually teaching them to descend the stairs safely. I also encourage elevator training when possible. So glad to you mentioned vehicles, and the use of ramps. Also having a very nice representative of the breed. Thank you!

We've had a rescue, Great Dane, in the past and he came to us very well trained already but, we're looking into getting a Wolf Hound. I love their temperament. These videos have been quite helpful!! Finding a reputable breeder is going to be a challenge with this breed but, that's okay. We'll wait for the right one. So I really thank you for this information!!!

Don't ever let them use stairs. Ultimately it's bad for their hips. Also feed them off the floor at a higher level. Wolfhounds like fruit, especially pears, and need to be fed vegetables as well as high quality food and a huge cow thigh bone to gnaw on. Training to never jump up on people is crucial as is excellent lead walking, and returning when called off the lead. Fabulous naturally gentle dogs, you'll fall in love with wolfhounds.

I have a Great Pyrenees/St. Bernard mix who is four and a half months old and she is already stronger than I am. I am having trouble controlling her while on the leash. She is supper friendly so I want to keep her from jumping on people. This is my first large breed dog and I want to be successful. I want a large dog I can be proud of.

Hi there, Mary! These are definitely reasonable and achievable goals to have with your large breed dog. We have several videos on the channel that you can use to learn how to stop your dog from jumping up as well as videos that show you how to teach your dog to walk on a loose leash. But if you feel like you’re really struggling with leash control, you could try an equipment change. Using something like a head harness may be a good way to give you more head control of your big, strong dog. Here’s a link to a video we published a few years ago that talks about using a Gentle Leader: How To Use A Gentle Leader Head Collar - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIjCfImLnK6isLs Thanks for watching! ~Ken

You’re making me very glad that I’ve taught my 10 week old Bernese mountain dog how to do the stairs. That buddy can run up and down the stairs with the paper in his mouth now! You are right, some things you are told about training, don't work for large breed dogs. We are at the point where stepping on the leash won't fully keep our pup from jumping up on people. He's 90 lbs+ at 9 months and it's really hard finding good training content out there for giant breeds! Currently our biggest struggle happens during walks, our pup will randomly bite the leash, then jump up and mouth my arm. How do I get this situation under control? When he's up on both feet, he's taller than me.... and it's getting harder and harder to quickly "shut it down" so he doesn't practice bad behaviors.

good video, can't speak for other giant breeds, but on my 6th and 7th wolfhound. He's right in that they are pretty easy to train - short sessions work best. Also, making sure you can handle them starting when they are young is so important. You can never be harsh with a wolfhound, they just don't understand. If they're raised properly, they are a very sweet and gentle dog. They just love my grandkids and are very gentle with them. They get along well with other dogs - coyotes not so much.

How did you keep your pup from chewing on things in the house? I am adopting right now and they told me she will destroy everything in my house with chewing. I don’t believe that. There must be a way to have these dogs without them destroying. I don’t think the person I’m getting her from is accurate.

Hi Ken, thank you for this video! We got an Irish Wolfhound, Pinto, a month ago and we adore him! BUT, he pees every five seconds in the house. He doesn’t have a UTI, just took him to the vet. He just has parasites which we are treating. I was taking him out every ten minutes, but it was hard to work like that. We tried crating, but he screamed for hours. I’m so lost. Is it because he is a large breed? Any suggestion is very much appreciated!

Thanks so much for this video! It's very helpful and informative. We recently got a one-year old male Newfoundland. We've had Newfs before and love the breed. This guy has a few behavioral issues though - mostly that he keeps jumping up and mounting me (and only me). When I'm standing, sitting on the couch, cleaning off his paws to come in the door - anytime. I calmly tell him off, and move his body off of mine and then try to redirect him to sit. However, he seems obsessed with this behavior. He's not aggressive, but he's almost 150 lbs, so it's a lot of dog to have on me. We do plan to have a professional trainer come in and we'll get him neutered once he's old enough, but is there anything we can do in the meantime to put an end to this behavior? Thanks!

I have do have a question for Irish Wolfhounds specifically- being a deep chested and a large dog, they are prone to bloat from what I've researched. Would you advise stomach stapling or not? And if so, at what age would you do that kind of surgery?

You definitely need a big yard with a dog like this. They need lots of exercise. Eat lots of food and make lots of poop. Also, I imagine that Irish Wolfhound puppies are very expensive. They are short-lived---seven years is average according to wiki, and most die of bone cancer. Not for everyone. For the person who really wants something different and has the means to afford it.

I've had Irish Wolfhounds for years. I would never , ever recommend getting a puppy from a breeder who has only been breeding for 4 years. That is a breeder with minimum experience. I would never get a hound from any breeder with experience less than 10 years and that breeder, most especially with Irish Wolfhounds - as they are unlike other breeds in numerous ways - keep detailed notes of every breeding, all puppies and health records. The breeder should not breed more than 2 times a years. One breeding more often is obviously breeding for money and not for the betterment of the breed. Irish Wolfhounds were once only owned by nobility for a reason. Not all are worthy of them.
