Thank you to Mel for setting up this Bush Walk tour in Melbourne, Australia for us! Check her out at www.worksforbir....
This was our first ever bush walk in Australia and we loved it. Thank you to those patrons and fans that came out to join us! It was so much fun meeting all of you!
Of course Dave had to take a moment to joke about trying to train the wild sulpher crested cockatoos... so then I actually wanted to give it a go! The sound of the clicker definitely startled them but some were braver than others! Hope you enjoyed this behind the scenes look at our fun times in Oz!

I love this video. I see flocks of wild cockies in my suburb every day here in Sydney -- but that target training was hilarious. And the tall trees ( mountain ash I think) are spectacular, nothing like those around my way -- what a stunning location. I am always tickled by how goofy cockies look when they run across the ground - like penguins, they are quaint already with their madly crosslegged walk, but that lurching hop-skippety-jump like a wind-up toy when they put on the pace (like some are doing in the background), is hilarious.

I’m finally getting one, and If it wasn’t for you guys - I’d be in a world of trouble. A lot of the breeders charge $8000 and up for their birds, and they’re giving their clients horrible advice. I can’t count how many times you’ve said NOT to do what the breeder is telling me to do. Thank you for all that you do, and continue to do. I know the birds are all thanking you and Dave. Hi guys, lovely video and nice to see you interacting with the locals here in Australia ☺️ I just wanted to say, more for the viewers than you guys, that feeding wild birds here is discouraged. It’s not something I was aware of when we moved here and I’m not sure it’s a message that is spread widely. Whilst not illegal, continued feeding can cause issues for the birds’ health and natural behaviour, and can have wider implications on the environment too. It’s a fairly long standing issue and, whilst it’s fun, it can cause long term problems. There’s quite a bit of info on government websites if anyone is interested. I don’t want to put a downer on your lovely video, but just wanted to let people know. It’s fairly common to see people feeding wild birds, especially the sulphur crested cockatoo, but the damage it can cause is enough that I felt the need to pass this info on, for the love of the birds. ☺️ 💗 x

Did you happen to meet any flocks of suburban Cockatoo's ? They are VERY cheeky compared to the bush flocks. Really great to see you guys enjoying Australian birds , we (Aussies) tend to take them for granted. My Indian Ringneck calls out to the local flocks as they fly over every day. We have flocks of sulphur crested cockatoo's , galahs and depending on the time of year , red tailed black cockatoos. But there is a single galah that comes to visit my Parrot every afternoon as it's flock goes on without it. My parrot mimics galah talk so they try and converse . lol. Its very sweet that it comes every day without fail to try and talk to my parrot. Great video guys ! Love from Australia !!

@First Last That wasn't my point, not at all. In their natural habitat, they are common, in the video they seem as common and conditioned as pigeons in the park. In the United States cockatoos still have monetary value, regardless of how you feel about it. I wasn't making a moral or social statement. I hope you are fortunate in acquiring birds without having to pay for them, especially if you love them so.

Sorry for asking a serious question but as a regular viewer of your videos and as an owner of a Sulfur Crested Cockatoo I am deeply concerned at the wildfires raging across your country. My question is this, In the face of an approaching wildfire, do Parrots abandon their territory in order to flee to safety or do they stick around and perish?. I look at this video and I cant help but feel sorrow at the colossal amount of bird habitat that has been so tragically lost.

In Australia, bush fires are a natural part of forest progression. Most native trees will thrive even more after a bush fire, so the birds, and most other wildlife, learned thousands of years ago to "go with the flow" and migrate around the fires. Sadly the "environmentalists" got involved some years ago, and whined and cried to stop the fire brigade from doing small controlled "back burns" to clear out the underbrush and dead plant matter, which is why we now see these devastating fires consuming hundreds of hectares of forest.

many of our cockatoos rely on natural hollows in trees to nest. Unfortunately, hollows that are deep enough for larger species can take many decades to form and are rarely found in "healthy" trees... so in the long run, the damage done to large gums is probably helpful to future generations. Many of our cockatoos ( sulfur crested, galahs, corellas etc) are also very comfortable in urban areas, and you can find large populations of these species in areas well away from the fires and in town. ( some are much more shy like the blacks... but they too do move across very large areas, we usually hear them instead of seeing them!) Our cockatoos fly a long way pretty regularly and they will be ok in these disasters...... its the slower moving animals like koalas, wombats and possums that are really at risk in this situation.

i have the same worries , also the heat is causing the birds so much distress . . the prime minister of Australia must call in the air force to help put the fires out should have done it a long time ago ,,

@@lrg162 Climate change has a lot to do with it, and you'll find that "thousands of years ago" there were no controlled burns.. Most other wildlife do not "go with the flow" and ,many many perish.

are you going to go up to Corrumbin Wildlife Park on the Gold Coast, the Rainbow Lorikeet feeding is awesome! We did a behind the scenes tour with our six year old twins just recently and got to see lots of the birds in the show up close. It was pretty cool. The free flight bird show is awesome too.

Just wanted to say, those birds absolutely AMAZING! I love seeing and being with birds in their natural habitat, as an avid birdwatcher :) This is kind of random, but I have a question... do you fly (as in on an airplane) with your birds? I have been researching about it, and I was wondering what you do, as you travel a lot. Thanks! :)

Yes, if bringing many of them they usually go cargo but if bringing one small or medium one we can bring them carry on (though it's more complicated to do because the airlines are always changing their own rules.)

so interesting. you could see that one cockatoo really trying to process it after the first couple. seemed like he was associating it already and was really trying to work it out. when you can see animals trying to figure something out I think is the most fascinating thing to observe about them. its like for those moments, we can relate with them, our own perception of reality.

as a kid it was a family tradition to catch puffing billy to belgrave with your feet hanging out of the old train. once there, we'd go to Sherbrooke forest and whilst wearing raincoats, my Pa would place bird seeds on your hooded head, shoulders, and hands. then several Rosella's would flock to you and eat as you stood still. definitely recommend. if anyone reading this ends up in Melbourne and staying more over south east Melbourne for a couple of days. i'd also recommend going to gumbuya park/world. they have kangaroos, emus, dingoes etc you can get up close with pet and feed (probs not the dingoes). great place to picnic or have a bbq, they also have a couple of rides. beside it is the water park which is also fun. about an hour from there is phillip island which has some pretty good beaches and you can stay there a couple of nights. its about 2hrs from Melbourne, Belgraves about 40 from Melbourne and gumbya world is a bit over an hour so usually recommend if you plan to stay around that area for several days. you can also go to the peninsular its much closer to Melbourne than phillip island, the beaches are alright, great wineries, has hot springs and you can swim with dolphins if you go at the right time of year.
