I wasted an entire day looking through his videos and could never find a trained dog, let alone a trained behavior. It was like watching a reality tv show about some developmentally disabled kid, who’s life ambition is to be a dog trainer, only at the end the kid fails and commits suicide; only at the end the kid lives and gains KZbin fame as a successful dog trainer. The suicide is actually by the viewers who watched to the end only to find out that even his own dog appears to be developmentally disabled.

I know both of you and have trained with both of you, it took me back to the Oakland field where we used to train with Dean and Penny. I have heard most of the stuff Dean said but without both of you I would still be struggling to get iGP2 on my dog. The best decision our Guam club made was connecting with Dean Calderon. Dean taught us how to love dogs and respect for the sport. For some of us Dean remains a true highlight in our lifetimes. Through Dean we also met T. Floyd, Roland Siebel, and the legendary Fritz Bieler. Through Dean we also met, vicariously, Ivan Balabanov and many of the greats Dean and Ivan speak of here. Back in the 80s Dean was already known and appreciated. I had the pleasure of watching him work on several occasions. His insight to dog behavior was eye opening. I saw Dean back off a hard charger with water. I swear I was just as shocked as the GS that was running towards the blind. No pain, lots of gain.

The serious destruction of the sport began in the 1980’s when the attack on handler was removed from the SchH1 protection routine. The attitude previously was that weak dogs should be eliminated from the sport program to disqualify them from breeding. Dean Calderon hit the nail on the head when he said that he is suspicious of the show dog people.

Thank you both for mentioning John Mulligan. 1:06:47. Tough, fair and respectful of every team. As Ivan says, he gave you homework with his critics. My first BH and SchH1 in the USA were under him. Changed my view of the sport. After judging, he'd stay and train with us and put on the sleeve as a regular Joe. Early 90's at Nussbaum's.

I feel for Ivan in many of his podcasts. The guest agreed that the pressure on the dog from the stick hit is an important aspect of the sport to show an aspect of the dog (stability?) for future breeding. “Show Rottweilers will bite people” and golden retrievers will beat gsd’s in shutzhund. But the question to what do we do was… …. I don’t have an answer. We’ll defer to the judges and association. He let Ivan down. Gentlemen, You are now the elder statesmen. If you don’t speak up for your sport together with ALL the names that were mentioned by Dean, your sport will turn into non-contact sport karate. (I could take care of myself in a street fight but I’ll never know because I’ve never actually hit someone full force.) The discussions Ivan has with his guests about the direction of this sport sounds like Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky saying, we disagree with the direction the way hockey is going…. Now… if we only knew someone with with some clout, we could put it back on track and secure it for the future. The passion is there, but if not now, when?

I must be honest, I'm surprised at everyone saying this was the best podcast you've ever done. I think many of your listeners know this person and they know the history of the sport so they have this nostalgic appreciation for it, but for me it was very difficult to hear him speak in this disjointed manner. His story telling reminds me of people with ADHD that bounce up and down and sideways in a topic or story. It was still entertaining, but there have been many fantastic guests on your podcasts with such a wealth of knowledge that I have to disagree with all the people saying that this is without a doubt the best podcast you've done. Recently Jenifer Zeligs stood out as such an interesting and educational episode because it covered animal training beyond just dogs.
