Good video - one of the other mistakes is leg position - some people spread their legs apart on the first part of the stroke. I never had problems with technique since I have been rowing since I was a child. Just the same - good video. When I row I do 10,000 meters in roughly 30-31 minutes. I am along distance kayak racer.

I think the thing I appreciate the most about this channel, is that you don't pull the usual KZbin move of BSing for 12 mins at the beginning of your videos. Just straight to the topic that brought us here. Thank you so much for not wasting my time!

I rowed at Oxford last century and I’ve got one improvement you can make - you drop your hands too low when taking the stroke - keep them higher so there is a straight line between the cog on the machine and your shoulder socket. Otherwise you will be losing power just straightening the linkage of all these elements - the chain and your arms need to act as one long uninterrupted rail.

I started rowing for fitness about a year and a half ago, and this video has made all the difference. I always do the two minute pick drill at the start of every rowing session. I worked really hard the first six months on my form and slowly increasing my length of rowing time. What’s amazing is that focusing on these basics has allowed me to row injury and pain free (and I have two bum knees and lower back). I can row longer and stronger than other people half my age (I’m almost the big 5-0). My current PR is 5000 meters in distance, and I can row about 23 minutes non-stop. I got there little by little. Started only able to row 5 minutes and slowly add a bit more time. Rowing has become my favorite!

Long time weight lifter…just got my concept 2 setup today. Your example of knee bounce in a deadlift was a great visualization for me…comparing the rowing stroke to proper form with a deadlift-finishing with the power at lockout at the top of the lift. That clicks for me thank you thank you! First row today…I might have looked like a melting chocolate bar on the machine when I got tired 😂 😅

Thank you so much, Austin! I have owned a rowing machine for over 10 years and been rowing on and off for over 30 years. All this time, I've been guilty of all three mistakes, most especially relying on the foot straps. So much so that I always ended up dragging the rowing machine back about 6 feet across the floor for every 10 minutes of rowing! As a guy in his forties with back problems, your video has helped me immensely. I can really feel the core working now which will strengthen the whole area and should help alleviate some of my back pain. Thanks again, dude.

Finally after a month got the rowing stroke right I still can't do it without the foot straps though. I was rowing all wrong for about three weeks but I still hot exhausted and I still lost a lot of belly fat sooo I'm guessing it was working my core somehow. I have tried every single piece of gym equipment. Treadmill was amazing for weight loss but it left me skinny with a huge belly believe it or not. Rowing has got rid of that and I'm starting to see the start of abdominal muscles FINALLY

I am very new to fitness, but I'm starting "phase 2" of my weight-loss journey (I've already lost 80 lbs over the last couple of years just by counting calories) and hoping to focus more on exercise, strength-training, cardio, etc. I recently joined a gym for the first time in about 12 years and so far have felt extremely overwhelmed. The trainers there are very nice and patient but for some reason their instruction just hasn't 'clicked' with me and my technique still needs a lot of work. But I just discovered the rowing machine a couple days ago and fell in LOVE. It's so soothing and easy to kinda get lost in the motion! I was struggling with going through the proper motions, but your video has definitely helped me pinpoint where I was going wrong (the dreaded knee bounce! Ahh!) and what I need to fix. Thank you so much for the great demonstration/explanation! I can't wait to go back and try it out this time :).

During summer, I discovered the rowing machine at my gym. I starting using it 3x a week for a few months. But I was doing it all wrong. My son has told me to “google” anything I want to know. So your videos came up, and, well, I learned a lot. It has taken me until now, end of November, to relearn the steps to row accurately. I do keep my feet flat and this eliminated the pain I felt in one knee. What is interesting is that I saw a young girl do the bouncing legs and a man move the rowing bar up and over his knees. Many turn up the drag to 10, something I use to do. I have seen many benefits for me, 69 years, never to old to learn something new.
@trainingtall6 жыл бұрын
Hey Jackie! I think it shows a lot of character that you were willing to learn and re-learn how to row in order to do it correctly! Rowing is a very challenging motion and most are too lazy to perform the stroke correctly or understand the effectiveness of the machine. You are on the track to long term success with the rower, so keep up the great work!! :)

@@trainingtall - tried your "feet out" tip yesterday... could feel the effort on my core, but proved I was doing it right all along. Also made sure I wasn't bouncing and tried stopping between movements as well. Did that for 40 minutes/300 calories (going slow cuz I'm fat.) I have REALLY bad knees... old surgery that removed meniscus, torn meniscus in the other knee, both anterior ligaments snapped back a long time ago. Kicked out of the Army in '84 because of the arthritis. All the rowing makes them hurt (but they hurt anyway, so...) Any helpful tips?

Three suggestions for a good stroke: 1) relax your shoulders - you should feel the power between your scapula 2) don't grip the bar, just loosely hold it 3) at the catch, put masking tape one inch below and above where the chain is. You should be in that range throughout your stroke

I have practiced these drills at a slower pace so that I can imprint these skills in mind and body. Thanks so much!

great video, always good to go back to basics.I have been a rower for years, love my Model D. Had a mishap on a rower at the gym, was using a thick padded seat as I have a boney butt,seat didn't self-adhere as it was supposed to, went flying out and YES, I ended up astride the bar!You are correct, VERY painful, glad I am not a man!

Great video, Austin! I am new to rowing and just purchased a Concept2. I want to develop good habits from the get go, and I would love for you to make a follow along video incorporating these drills more in depth. It would be extremely helpful.

Thank you for the video. I used the rowing machine for the first time yesterday and I am in love with it. Working now to build up my body shape and lose weight and I hope it's going to help me.

Thank you so much for this video. I knew the minute I tried the row that it was going to be "the one" that'll help me most with my goals while making me feel great at the same time. I appreciate the tips to make sure I'm doing it right.

Came across your video and happy to find out my technique is correct. I can confirm - had the seat slide back without me noticing one time and sat/fell on the rail. The bruise was spectacular. A mistake you only make once! 🤣

Thank you so very much for this video. I've had misdiagnosed orthopedic issues for over 20 years and am recovering from surgeries on three different joints while awaiting a fourth on my midfoot. I have been unable to do much exercise for so long and every day is a challenge. I have been thinking about trying rowing again but most other videos seem to show a lot of foot movement, going up on one's toes and such (which I can't do). Just the though of a strap over my midfoot is terrifying. Your explanation here and the "feet out" drill give me so much hope. Thank you!!

Thank you, Amber! I wish you well in your recovery. Hopefully, rowing can help you out and it doesn't hurt you!

Amber Henson I’ve come across this video for similar reasons. Broken metatarsal’s and looking for something I can do instead of running. Curious to know if you pursued rowing and how it was on your foot? Thanks

Much appreciated 😬 I like work smarter and not harder. The 3 core helped me a lot to get a smooth movement

Did realize "melting" was the wrong stroke motion. Will have to address this today. Thanks!
@trainingtall6 жыл бұрын
The rowing stroke should feel fluid and consistent, but yeah the way I describe the "melting" here should definitely be avoided

Did it yesterday. Need to work on the form more. Definitely felt it in the abs.
