Great episode. Excellent update on the WFP. Refreshing to see that ppl used common sense and actually made a tour a la PGA or LIV for functional fitness. This is great for the sport and exactly at the right time.

As the three of them discussed: The tour format is a huge opportunity to tell stories about the athletes. Such stories got me into CrossFit in the first place and add to my motivation to keep at it. I think that applies to a lot of a people. Also, as an average affiliate-goer, having three additional high scale competions to watch is a great prospect. Hope this works out. It could really benefit the sport as a whole.

Travis: What questions did you have for Will before signing? Max: Why did you take a backseat once the WFP took off? What will be your involvement moving forward? Perrin: Do you think the WFP is going too fast? CTP: who will be the “fittest”, winner of the games or WFP? Thanks gang, solid content as always

Dang why me for that one? Whether people want to believe Games actually finds the fittest or not, that is their thing. So I'd say the Games, and WFP would just be a champion. Sorry I guess I just look at it from a naming perspective. An in depth debate about who of the two winners of each is actually more fit is above my pay grade.

If the WFP gets successful over the next few years. Is there a possibility that CrossFit gives WFP the sport side of CrossFit. Then focuses on the actual health aspect of CrossFit? Or focus on the affiliates?

Respectfully - so many games athletes do not train at affiliates. Brent and Ariel are two immediate examples that jump to mind. And of those who do, often (out of necessity, granted) don't do so in community/class hours. So really I don't at all see the benefit let alone link of how this helps affiliates, at all.
@maxel-hag4389

This is a good point. I see anything that drives interest in competitive fitness as a positive for affiliates. If people are drawn to a sport performed in a gym resembling an affiliate, it could create opportunities for fans to train there, aspiring young athletes to pay for open gym memberships, and broader social acceptance within the fitness market. These might be indirect benefits, but I’ve seen a similar dynamic in the golf world. During COVID, interest in golf exploded, and clubs suddenly had waitlists and increased membership dues due to higher demand. While I don’t think WFP could have the same immediate impact, over time, an increase in professionalism in the sport could benefit the entire ecosystem of people involved. I could be wrong, but those are my thoughts. I appreciate your perspective, and I guess time will reveal the truth for both of us to observe.

@maxel-hag4389 I like your point too! The top down effect has driven CrossFit in its earliest days and still does. I think competitive fitness is one avenue to get members in the door of affiliates, but I have to admit that I don't believe it's the primary avenue by which most people first enter a CrossFit gym. The affiliate I train at is coached by multiple games athletes (which is cool, and does bring some people in), but majority of our new members dont have that context for them, or even watch the games ( also a positive for the perception of the sport last season I suppose....). What I imagine is a dream world is CrossFit (HQ) - or even the elite athletes - driving more initiatives that are geared towards driving new members to CrossFit gyms, eg. Health, mental health, connection/community. I think the reliance on the elite sport path as a feeder has inadvertently enabled the elites to randsom/leverage against HQ's greater goals (3 million for example) for their own interests in recent times. And in scale, that is potentially the most people, and at its core - the affiliates. Ultimately alot of this points back to the division between training and sport.

To echo Max's point, I believe the vast majority of Games athletes started in affiliates for many years before they built garage gyms and transitioned there. My assumption is garage gyms check a big box that include but are not exclusive to the following: accommodating busy schedule (especially if you have children), convenience and logistics (doesn't interrupt classes or gym closures), can invest and practice specialty movements less commonly seen in affiliates (sandbag weights, hs obstacles, pegboards, other odd objects). Not everyone has this luxury though it is becoming more commonplace especially after COVID when many invested in gym equipment to hedge risk of a gym closing or being closed. That being said, CF inherently has a higher learning curve due to its variance of movements and equipment needs. If it continues to grow and/or attract new customers, affiliates are the places people will go to begin because there is infrastructure (coaching) and community to support it. When you take something to the professional level, some people are going to be more selective about their training environment which may not accommodate an affiliate who runs the majority of their business on a group class model - some will. Either way, if WFP or any other CF competitions thrive and get more eyeballs and $ in the space, I don't see how that wouldn't benefit affiliates.

The big mistake CrossFit did is that it benefited financially from having an elite athletes in the sport and not allowed the same elite athletes to earn honest money by professionalizing the sport

Agree with the fact that CrossFit doesn't owe any athletes anything. Dave said it well in a recent podcast that the Games was meant to be a manifestation of the fittest inside affiliates. It led to athletes being able to build a brand/make a living from it, yet that was never the goal. As an affiliate owner thats whats most frustrated. The constant negativity/ drama/ content on how (useless and unprofessional) CrossFit is, is so draining , while back at home 99.9% of our members have no real concern for any of it and love the methodology and training. Let the "elites" go do their thing with the WFP and "professionalize"the crap out of it, along with the fans who I assume go to one of these CrossFit box things.....The rest will remain positive about the impact affiliates have and focus on how this methodology can change lives.

HQ should focus on getting people healthy for sure, and simply sponsor events instead of running them. But also, HQ needs to take a bit of a critical look at some of their holy cows and refine their approach. The fitness space has grown tremendously and information sharing has really grown our understanding of how the body works. Some of the fundamentals that Greg preached in 2005 are simply incorrect and the L1 etc. are badly in need of a refresh.

the CFG have inspired me for 8 years to train, pay 2k each yr to my affiliate and compete. losing the Games would make me sad. I might still train but the drama about a once per yr event is amazing ... a bit like the World Cup every 4 yrs compared to Champions League. Tour is cool but nothing beats the rare pinnacle of the sport. wishing CFG and WFP both well

Well at one point they were actually similar to crossfit. If you go back and read some of their history in the early days many of the 'touring pros' were not making money, the events had low (or zero) attendance, and fans didn't watch them. It took many years of trial and error to get to the profitability point. Profitable businesses are not usually profitable when they are in start up mode. And even though CrossFit has been around for a while, the sporting side of it hasn't really been a large thing for much more than 10 years. The pga tour was founded in 1968, so we still have a lot of years to start making direct revenue comparisons.
