In the 1960s my grandparents retired to Lancing, and my sister and I used to stand on that footbridge to watch the trains. In those days they had headcodes: 60 and 62 for Portsmouth, 35 for Littlehampton etc. The exciting one was the 16 which didn't stop and thundered through on its way to and from Brighton.
