Following on from my previous video of trains at Norwood Fork we turn our attention to Norwood Junction station which is a little to the north of the fork. Opened by the London and Croydon and named Jolly Sailor after the local pub, the station was served only by L&C trains with London & Brighton and South Eastern Railway trains passing through without stopping.
The modern service is much the same with only some Thameslink services calling in addition to the local suburban routes.
Network Rail have proposed a major redevelopment of the station as part of the reorganisation of Windmill Bridge Junction and the Selhurst Triangle site. Only time will tell what eventually happens.
The clips were filmed on a Sunday when engineering work on the East London Line meant that there were no London Overground services running here. On the other hand Southeastern services from Hastings were passing through due to closure of their usual route north of Tonbridge.

My "home" station! I now live in Essex but, almost 70 years ago, I was born in Tennison Road just east of Davidson Road. We moved to South Norwood Hill when I was 10, and then I came to Essex for work after Uni., but my mum still lives in South Norwood. I have fond memories of watching steam engines being "fed and watered" in the small depot that was just to the north side of the west end of the bridge and later seeing electric trains going through the carriage washer there. I also remember that, if you timed it right, you could walk through a train in Platforms 1 & 2 to get to Platform 3 (and vice-versa) without having to use the subway!

Excellent video again ... brings back more memories of commuting from Norwood Jct to Euston for a few years! Those Fast lines over Portland Road bridge and the S&C nearby still looks like giving a bumpy ride! In my youth I remember the weed killing Class 20’s using them sidings for stabling.

Last but not least; it must be a hellishly costly exercise having to run 10 car consists on weekends to provide services to Caterham and TC especially as they're both predominantly commuter lines (unless there have been some tourist developments on either route that I'm unaware of!). I'd have thought a shuttle on one or other line to Purley with connections into the other service, all using 455s (456s might have been useful here to if they still had them) would be more cost effective and eliminate the splitting and rejoining there. Although I suppose scheduling such a departure from their weekday service might simply be in the too hard basket.

@@BoogiesTrains Of course! Not being even an irregular train traveller down here in country Victoria (Aust), that hadn't occurred to me, but having seen some interior shots of UK trains during the pandemic, I think only about half the seats can be used. Who's paying for that I wonder? Ultimately the taxpayer I suppose.

The government is picking up the tab for the next couple of years. All the franchises have been suspended and replaced by management contracts. A couple of the franchisees are very happy as they were about to go bust even without Covid. A couple of others are unhappy. They wanted compensation for the effect of Covid on their expected profit. The government offered to let them continue to run their franchises until they ran out of money. They soon signed up for the management contracts. I have only made a few off peak journeys. Trains are very quiet, probably because most leisure destinations are either closed or working at much reduced capacity. Central London is earily quiet.

Didn’t know that Thameslink Class 700 can stop at Norwood Junction. As it’s mainly served with London Overground Class 378 and Southern Class 455 and Class 377 operating the suburban services. Why is Thameslink allowing the Class 700 to stop there.
