A look at Sunday services on the northern corner of the Selhurst Triangle, including Southeastern Hastings services diverted due to engineering works north of Tonbridge.

Excellent video to understand flyover system and different routes

What an absolutely brilliant viewpoint. Best on a cloudy bright day or the sun will straight into the lens.

I like a bit of white sky. Diffuses the light nicely. I also try to have as little sky as possible in shot so that the contrast between the train and the background is not compromised by a bright sky.

Excellent video again from Tennison Road bridge! Good zoom shots as well! So much has changed with this view over the years, with the closing and lifting of Norwood Down yard (replaced by the houses), the building of the newer shed at Selhurst depot, closure of the loco stabling point (replaces by the flats), the Croydon skyline, and the new rolling stock ... the ‘455’s being the oldest now around here ... and I can remember them being introduced!

Just for clarification the lines from Norwood to Windmill Bridge are the UP / DN London Bridge Lines. The UP / DN Victoria lines from Selhurst to Windmill Bridge. South of Windmill Bridge the lines become the UP / DN Fast / Slow lines. The lines to West Croydon are the UP / DN Wallington.

I like how the trains snake around the curves because of the tracks. And as you said about Selhurst triangle that is a very busy junction. With Selhurst depot in the background and Central Croydon with the tower buildings. The junction does need modernisation.

You mean a step-ladder, portable height enhancement device indeed!

Excellent informative video. I'm going to need to look at a a map of the area to understand it better. Well done 🤓 stay safe 💙
Very informative! I find the Southeastern diverts particularly interesting. I read that the Tonbridge via Redhill services were staffed by SE crew using the Southern Selhurst based 377's on a more permanent basis, not sure how much truth was in that.

When looking at this and talking about modernisation and reconstruction, it's worth remembering that this complex was extensively remodelled in the 1980s to create the current Selhurst Triangle. Prior to then it was called the Croydon Tangle (for very good reasons). The slow lines at East Croydon were platforms 1 and 2, with 4 to 6 for fast services. The network of flying, burrowing and flat junctions to join Selhurst, Norwood Junction and East and West Croydon was even more impressive than at present, needing to transpose the Victoria fast and slow lines, put the London Bridge slow lines outside the fast and provide passenger carrying lines round from Selhurst to Norwood Junction over which regular timetable services operated. I travelled regularly from Thornton Heath to East Croydon as a child to visit my granmother, who lived a stone's throw from East Croydon station. Travelling the Tangle was always a highlight of every trip (in 4-SUB and even older stock). I have a 1982 publication "This is Southern Region Central Division" which has comparative plans of the Tangle and the Triangle. The changes were huge. Other than realigning formations for higher speeds and getting rid of the obvious flat bottleneck at Cottage Junction, I can't see what the planning gurus can be hoping to achieve with a further remodelling.

Details of the proposals are on the Network Rail website. The main thing is really the rebuilding of East Croydon station to give eight platforms and the reorganisation of Norwood Junction station to make the platform arrangements more logical.

Good location

You do need to take a portable personal height enhancement device to be able to see over the bridge parapets. A small stepladder or big box might do. I had my bicycle and was able to see by standing on the pedals.

Is there a possiblity that you could do these shots in two more videos, one in am peak, and the other in pm peak ??? PLEASE, WITH SUGAR ON IT ? This is a pivotal, major set of junctions with so many different movements, and routings. I LOVE THIS PLACE ! Aarre Peltomaa

Hi Aarre. It doesn't usually suit me to be out early enough or late enough to catch the peaks. In any case current service levels mean that most of the peak time extras aren't running. Travel to work patterns were already changing before Covid. For example trains leaving London Victoria were full from 15:00 to 23:00. I suspect that rush hour has been consigned to history.

13:49 Why is this and so many other Ups taking the slow instead of the fast up ? Maintenance ? Aarre Peltomaa p.s. These are my favorite set of flying junctions in the whole world !

This was filmed on a Sunday so engineering would be a consideration. If I remember correctly, there were staff inspecting the fast lines just beyond the flyover.

@@BoogiesTrains Yes, they were. There were not too many trains, so it was interesting to see the Thameslink take the Slow up. Thanks so much. Aarre Peltomaa

what camera do you use
@BoogiesTrains4 жыл бұрын
I use a Panasonic Lumix TZ90. It is a compact stills camera but has reasonably good video capabilities, including 4k. I like it because it is small and light but has a good optical zoom. An important part of the finished video is the production software. I use Power Director 365 which is quite instinctive. You can get a free trial.
