An excellent morning spent at Sheffield train station situated at the northern end of the Midland Mainline where we see services from East Midlands Trains, Cross Country, Northern, Transpennine Express and freight from DB Cargo UK.
Sheffield station was opened in 1870 by the Midland Railway, the design of the station was put down to the architect John Holloway Sanders. This particular station was the fifth to be built in the city and subsequently the last one at that.
The station wasn't given an easy birth as it was built on what was known as the 'new line'. The reason it was called the new line was because this route would run in between Grimesthorpe Junction and Tapton Junction, the former being on the Sheffield and Rotherham Railway and the latter junction located north of Chesterfield. This route replaced what was called the 'old road' which worked its way from Sheffield Wicker to Rotherham which would ultimately connect to London.
Now the controversy came from the Duke of Norfolk who was the land owner where the line would try and pass through. He didn't want the line to be seen as he thought it would be a blight on the landscape, so he insisted that if the line was to go ahead then the designers would need to construct a tunnel which they eventually had to do if they wanted to complete the railway on time. This only remained in place for a number of years as eventually the tunnel was cut out to create a cutting which is now the current approach to the station. But once again this also brought with it another issue, a group known as the Sheffield Corporation put their hat into the ring by raising concerns that the eastern side of the city would be cut off from the centre of the town. So to sort out this issue they then had to install a footbridge leading over the station so that both halfs of the town were connected. That bring still stands to this day and oddly enough it was the bridge I was standing under whilst filming.
The station has gone through so many upgrades during its life with the introduction of newer trains, when the class 45 and 46 diesel locomotives were brought in a new engine shed was built to store them. However this was demolished when these engines were eventually retired. Of course more platforms were built, bay platforms were added to increase capacity. And again when East Midlands Trains started operating services the station was redesigned again to meet the capacity that was inevitably going to come, in turn this also brought the Sheffield Tram System up to modern standards with a tram station adjacent to the main station.
The station is busy all year round with the numbers last year reaching 9.5 million making it one of the busiest stations in Yorkshire.
My next station is going to be Doncaster on the East Coast Mainline.
You can now find me on Facebook through the group Tornado922, there you will find regular updates, videos and photos from all of my goings on throughout 2018.

Another brilliant clip Jarred despite the number of trains that had a large amount of passengers although Summer Saturday services do tend to get a lot of travellers to places like Paignton which is hardly surprising but that pacer set took the cake with it being so crowded you couldn't move if you tried and i was like Bloody hell

I hear you on that Jarred they should have lashed a pair of Sprinters together instead of a single Pacer or at the very least have a pair of Pacers lashed together but personally i won't be sad to see the Pacers go from regular service i'm just glad i never rode on them and if i did from the look of them i would not want to they just look uncomfortable to ride on.

Great video, Yeah I don’t like those Northern Pacers look like buses, they really need to remove them and put some new Northern trains because those pacers make a hell of a racket, I really like it when you say U-Turn it’s like your face is turning around lol and can you please do a train ride on Virgin Trains West Coast from London Euston to Chester. 😊😉😀😄👍👋

Great video dude, but something that I've been doing recently, and I think you'd benefit from both for video entertainment enhancing, and for enjoying stations more, is try different vantage points throughout the video. I normally film at one spot for 15 minutes, then another for 15 more and so on. It really changes the experience, and is great for stations like this one, where there's different bay platforms either end of the station. Still enjoyed the video though :)

Good video. EMT HST'S to/from St Pancras tend to serve Nottingham rather than Sheffield during the day. There used to be evening trains to Sheffield, at least one of which continued to Leeds, that were HST'S, but don't know if that is still the case?

Do you still have plans to build your outdoor model railway or has it been shelved for the moment?
@Tornado922
@Tornado922 6 жыл бұрын
It's still in the process of being built :) I'm just waiting on a shed to be removed from the patio then it's all but done. Track laying will only take about an hour or so. So hopefully by the end of next month it will be up and running and there will be videos to follow. It's not going to be anything amazing, Just a simply layout to see how it goes. I may then add to it and make it bigger.

Hi, What's your advice for being allowed to film on stations?
@Tornado922
@Tornado922 6 жыл бұрын
It really does depend on what station you want to go to when you go out filming. As a rule of thumb I usually make the station staff aware of what my intentions are before I start filming. That would be your best bet
