In this video we visit Subiaco, a station on the Airport and Fremantle Lines in Perth's inner western suburbs. Here we see Transperth A and B Series EMU's arriving and departing the station. The older four-car A Series EMU's are running Fremantle Line services, while the newer three-car B Series EMU's are running Airport Line services.
Subiaco station opened in 1883 and originally closed on the 1st September 1979 like the rest of the Fremantle Line, before reopening on the 29th July 1983. In the mid - late 1990's the West Australian Government undertook a major urban renewal project around Subiaco, known as the Subi Centro project. As part of this around 900 meters of the Fremantle Line was lowered into a cut & cover tunnel to allow for development around the railway line. This saw Subiaco station rebuilt into a trench which opened on the 12th December 1998.
The redevelopment eventually saw some transit oriented development constructed immediately surrounding the station including apartments, shops, cafe's, supermarkets, offices, parkland, and more. It's a very nice example of a transit oriented development that is highly walkable and places residents and places in close proximity to high-quality public transport. Perhaps for this reason Subiaco is the second-busiest station on the Fremantle Line with 975,390 annual passengers in 2013-14; only Fremantle is busier.
