As a person who has been through this area many times still don't know. At the signal-box what is the train driver handing to the signalman?

The driver is handing over a single line token, which is basically what a driver needs to have in order to travel on a stretch of single line. When the next train comes along which will soon be on single track, the signalman hands that same token just given to him to that driver. When that train then returns, the process is repeated. Hope this helps :)
