Trains at West Byfleet, SWR | 18/02/20

I don't very often venture onto the "metroland" system south of London. I.e Southern, South Eastern & South Western territory because there's not all that much to see. However the South Western network sparks my interest every once in a while for its phenomenal DMU lash ups (159's & 158's) and more recently the class Wessex Class 442 units are back on the route. After some time off gathering dust, then with Gatwick Express, then back gathering dust. They're back out to play on the South Western Mainline on a number of services to Portsmouth and peak time to Poole. So while I was out I decided to get some footage from the South West Mainline in action.
INCLUDES: 442's, 159's, 444's, 450's, 455's & a 456.
I managed to get a few more shots of the class 442's this day at Woking and Havant and I'll upload a separate video of that footage.

In the early 90s I lived in Petersfield, and back then 442s CIGs/BIGs (I think?) were the norm on that route. Was back in the UK late summer last year, and travelled the line for the first time since. Was able to travel on a refurbished 444 to Petersfield, returning on a 450. The 444 was quite impressive (was in 1st) Nice clip, the new SWR livery is very smart, suits the 442 and 444.

Wow. I noticed that whenever trains speed by the station, why there are sparks on the track since the line isn't electrified. It is even obvious in the dark

Actually the line is electrified via third rail, the sparks are caused by the pickup shoes on the train momentarily losing contact with the live rail, which causes electricity to jump between the third rail and the contact shoe in the form of a spark.

The Gatwick Express is a total joke. It should be fast, modern, and want to make people leave their car at hone for. Why aren't we building a brand new ,'dedicated' line for it? ... Or at least partially new line as is the case with the Heathrow Express. Also ( and this is v controversial) should it not bypass E Croydon altogether and use a different route?
