Pets off to the conductor for noticing the fire truck and getting out of the way. I'm kind of surprised that the fire truck didn't blare it siren at the train to get it to move

Moving a train is not as easy as moving a car. The train driver also probably didn't notice the fire truck and just so happened to move to the right of the screen because that's what they were going to do anyway. My assumption is they stopped on the crossing to clear a switch, then went to the other end of the train and continued shunting. And emergency personnel know this, they know they have to wait at closed level crossings.

Nice video and crossing! Love the mechanical bells there. Interesting that the NJT has just one random incandescent light on the closer signal. Interesting how there is a separate little ped crossing for the other track there as well.

Thank you so much! Me too, this is a failry recent install/upgrade, im suprised they chose Mechanical bells over e-bells. Yea, that puzzled me too, maybe they didn't have any LEDs at the time? Yea, they did that because the entrance/exit to the station platform is in the middle of the crossing

@@FreedomtowerStudios I'm guessing the lights were all LED, but one of the heads was damaged beyond repair at some point so an incandescent was reused to replace it.

i wonder why the train stopped blocking the crossing

I wonder why the driver of the black pick up truck continued to turn and didn't give way to a rather large fire engine?

Probably didn't see it until it was too late and he was blocking the intersection Turned to get out of the way @@Northstander

Train was coming out of the yard to be the next eastbound to NY Penn, but it had to clear the main switch before proceeding to pick up passengers, station is not long enough to accommodate the entire train so it was forced to block the crossing.

@@Northstander Yes the black pickup truck should've stayed and give way to the fire engine, but the pickup truck at least cleared, so the fire engine didn't seem to slow down.

did the engineer arrange to back up clearing the crossing? if so, good move.

Yes, it was coming out of the yard to the right of the camera and getting ready to proceed east to NY Penn

Very bad signalling design. There should either be space between the level crossing and a potentially red light, or the signal should be ahead of the crossing to ensure a train doesn't get stuck blocking crossing. I am curious if there were ay communications between fire truck and the locomotive (directly or via distaptch), if conductor notice fire truck and radios the loco or what. (not sure what the rules are for going back to a station, but normally, a train is not allowed to go backwards unless OKed by the CTC folks.

What to expect? US typically have bad signalling and level crossing design. Many European cities would have the railway above or below street level.

The train in question was coming out of the rail-yard (to the right of the camera), had to pull into the crossing to clear the switch and then reverse back into the station for its pickup. I don't believe the fire department and transit were in communication with one another, but i do think the engineer saw the fire truck and decided to quicky reverse the train. But yea, this crossing is poorly setup and needs something more. It does have "traffic lights" but they currently don't work as one was knocked down a few weeks ago and the DOT haven't gotten around to make the repairs needed to put them back into service nor have them connected correctly to the crossing.
