A fantastic spell at Clay Cross on this day with 37's, 47's, 56's, 58's, and 60's, plus HST's and 158's. Some signalling/track problems meant rare unusual routes were used for some passenger workings, and also this allowed for some bonus clag shots! There's over half an hour of footage so I've made it in two parts. Filmed on 13th May 1992.

She was a very mixed traffic beast around this time, working in the Midlands Infrastructure/Passenger pool if I recall. Thanks very much.

Grid clag! Good mix of stuff, you were busy in 1992! Always good to see the 58's, nice bit of Duff action - great clag at the end. A like from me.

Thanks. The early 1990's were a busy spell for me, being in my early 20's and a different job back then helped with things. I'd love to see some 58's brought back today - as some 56's and 60's have been - but sadly don't think it's likely.

Great shots from the archives Darren. Interesting to see 58047 running there with the plates covered. Lovely thrash from the 37s & 47s as well. Looking forward to part 2.

Thanks very much Ian. You'll enjoy Part 2 then - the 56 on MGR's one to listen out for in particular :-)

Thanks. There's not many of the 4 wheel coal wagons(MGR's)running over here now, the majority being higher capacity bogie hoppers now. There is on the odd occasion a rake or two of 4 wheel wagons(MEA's)used for coal, but not easy to film these workings. Having seen a few US freight flows it certainly seems to be big bulk wagons/hoppers over there along with the many container trains - some double stacked of course!

good video,,I remember the 4 wheel coal wagons in the pits in wales,,the newer ones look like they have breaks the old ones had to reliy on the loco and gardsvan,.my farther drove the old steam locos and still dose on the gwilly railway on accasions now 75 years old,,we don't have them like that here in the US.

Thanks Steve. I do have a reasonable amount of footage of the Class 58's, and they are missed from the mainline now.

Thanks Chris. Yes, I was surprised at the time to capture 58047 with covered plates - not often you see that. It was a good spot for thrash with the signals and slow line running for some services helping out nicely - more of the same in Part 2 now online!

Thanks Keith. Yes, sadly it's all spiked fencing and the 'road' down the side is gated off now - only the bridge shot remains. Obviously cooking runs in the family then :-) Thought you'd appreciate a track machine as they seem to follow you everywhere these days!

Noisy though it is I love the track sound. However did we cope without spiked fencing. Freight crews from Clay used to stay at the lodgeing house on Mill Road bridge as did the gaurd on The Thames Clyde Express. I was a chef at the lodge. Nice selection here Darren and you captured some of the namers pretty well and just look at that works machine bouncing along lol

Thanks. I don't think the 58 had been officially named at this point but had the plates fitted - would probably have been named at a ceremony within a day or two.

Cheers Tony. I hadn't notice the 58 driver before. I guess the drivers might have been a bit annoyed at the signal checks interrupting their high speed runs - I enjoyed I though, and it made for a better video :-)

Great stuff Daz, loved the 1st 58 shot, the guy in the back cab looked pretty relaxed, did you see his leg up on the window frame? The Hst driver that got out to phone the signaller looked a bit peed of by the way he slammed the cab door too. Great vid, looking forward to watching p2. Liked.

I think there were problems with some signals or track further south on the Derby line, so many passenger trains had to stop and phone the signal box for instructions.

Another classic, any idea why the 58 had its nameplate covered up?
