Nice to see the Airfix/Kitmaster railway stuff being built. Currently building a batch of the Presflos, mineral wagons, brake vans and tankers for my layout. Adding new couplings, metal wheels/brass bearings and a bit of weight and they work a treat. Largely cheaper and more detailed than a lot of RTR stuff, these kits still have their place. The Presflo wagon is a little gem. Tempted by the railbus. Never built that one.

Hi, thank you for viewing and these great comments. I built a Dapol version of the Presflo and rebuilt a couple of second hand Airfix ones. It makes a nice little rake. I have built a couple of the rail busses, nice kit. I hope to find a suitable motor bogie for one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn-xZmWcZ714bZI

Hi Ricardo. Thank you for this great comment. I hope you got it rolling okay. They were great kits in their day but not so good anymore. I have not completed the re-build of my Kitmaster Rocket but like you I shall have to make new piston gear when I do it. I do aircraft too, mainly 1/72nd. scale. All the best, David.

@@trainsontuesday Hi David thanks for the feedback. Yes I made it static on a single piece of track as I dont have a layout. I properly pinned the running gear so no ugly pin caps. On the kit they ran the pipes from the funnel back round to the footplate but they actually went into the pistons then back out to the regulator. Added missing pipes and bracing etc. Stuff like that. Next project is the airfix 040 saddle tank with a cattle wagon and brake van all looking weathered and abandoned at the end of the steam days. Keep up the great channel. Cheers.

Hello Stephen. Thank you for your comments. The earlier kits by Kitmaster and Airfix were certainly easier to get the wheels and motion working but with careful attention to the construction even todays Dapol versions can be made to work. Some of the kits in the video were built when I was pre-teen to early teens, i.e. sixty years ago! From a quick look at your channel it would appear that you are located close to Oxford, a place I went train spotting in the 60's. All the best, David.

I’ve just taken delivery of five Dapol kits....today’s issue, not heritage boxing’s and I’m very pleased with them! Schools Class, Evening Star, BoB Class “Fighter Pilot”, Deltic DP1 and a Mogul! Off of the back of this, I emailed Airfix and suggested a new line of kits, not in the traditional gauges but something bigger altogether, a Merchant Navy Class “Clan Line” that would run to an overall length of twenty four inches, or so (Engine and Tender combined). It’s a kit that could be offered “as she is” now, or “as she had been”, when she was fitted with the streamlined fairings, similar to the Battle of Britain Class. Airfix have replied, thanking me for the suggestions and qualifying their response with “we do not comment upon upcoming projects”, which is fair enough! Given the uptick in design abilities, I do hope that they seriously consider such a move, especially as Hornby sits within their umbrella and I believe that such a model would have its enthusiasts from within both mediums (Hornby / Airfix)? Thank you for sharing your collection with us.

Hello Richard. It is good that Dapol are continuing the old kitmaster/Airfix line. Back in the 1960's I thought that the range of OO railway accessories was good and I hoped for more releases. Sadly it did not develop that way. I continue to find uses for the kits and occasionally buy Dapol releases on my trips to the UK. Your idea for a larger scale model sounds fantastic. I can just imagine the amount of detail that could be molded into such a kit. I personally however would probably not be in the market for such a kit as I tend to model within a range from 1/76 to 1/100. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my video, it is much appreciated. There has been a sequel to this video, You can view it here; kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4bTiGyQf7-CiK8 I have completed a few more builds that I have not featured as such but another video you might find interesting featuring most of the Airfix range of OO scale accessories is this one; kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJm5mHxse7B9fLc Regards, David.

Hello John, thank you for this lovely comment. I, of course built the Airfix aircraft and military vehicles and played "war games." I borrowed an air rifle one time and strapped a German aircraft onto it and :flew" around shooting up targets of opportunity. As a result of that, one of these locos has a plasticine patch in the boiler. It has been there for around 55 years and you would be hard pressed to find it. Ah, the memories. Take care. 3:57 Are the wheels on that City quartered? I recently got a hold of an Airfix City of Truro, whilst assembling it I noticed the cranks weren’t quartered (offset by 180 degrees instead of 90), is this a problem on the Airfix model? Or did this carry over from the Rosebud tooling?
@trainsontuesday
@trainsontuesday Жыл бұрын
Hi Jay, the Kitmaster City of Truro was properly quartered straight from the box. I do recall having to "fix" the quartering on one Dapol model, probably the Schools class. A 180 degree offset would likely result in the wheels locking up.

Very interesting. Neither my Dapol version of the Schools or the Std 4 2-6-0 roll at all. I got given an Airfix Schools, which has a lot of warped parts, but too valuable to build anyway. My Dapol pug was not turntable either. Will see how a I go with Stephenson's Rocket, looks more likely. also have the class 03, but I'm doing a conversion on it... to the New Zealand Railways class Ds, which is an adapted version of the class 03, with a different cab profile and wheels on the inside of the frame, counterweights on the outside to fit our 6 ft 6 in gauge. the mods, requiring scratch built counterweights will make it too difficult to make movable, but it's a display so no worries.
@trainsontuesday
@trainsontuesday 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, it is certainly harder to get the Dapol versions rolling but not impossible. I am currently in the process of building my Battle of Britain class and so far all wheels are rolling freely. I have weighted the frames and the front bogie and pony truck. As long as the rods are of equal length and holes spaced evenly then I should be able to roll this one on the tracks too. Your conversion of the 03 sounds fascinating, I would like to see that when it's done. All the best, David.
@Pullisto
@Pullisto 2 жыл бұрын
@@trainsontuesday Thanks, that's good to hear... I've seen a couple of mentions elsewhere that the BOB class is a more free runner, I've been considering getting one. My next will be the City of Truro, only two rods to worry about! But I'm not to bothered my ones so far don't as I don't have a layout. The L&Y pug i did never rolled either. Not sure when I'll get the 03 finished but for sure I can send pics, flick me a PM with your email address. Someone has already done this conversion, I can show you pics of that if you like. as it happens, the local heritage railway, (Ocean Beach Railway, Dunedin), which I sometimes have done so volunteer work for, has one preserved, I took the model parts along, and certainly when you get in the cab, all the commonality and one or two changes in the NZ conversion, is reality apprant. I have a few pics of the DS, so once again you can see the main alterations made, and some parts that are recognisable as the 03. Unfortunately there seems to be no footage on here of the Ds, as the local one hasn't run for some years, been sanded down for some years for a repainted but pushed back in the queue (loco is in good mechanical order), but we are planning this as the next project. So I'll be in the unique disposition of working on the real deal, and one 76 times smaller. Amazing to see the other kits of Kitmaster that I never knew about. I built Deltic but it got stolen while part complete, and though I've got a replacement kit, I haven't opened it. Hope one day The General gets re released. While I predominantly like British, I like those Frontier locos. The only loco kit outside UK I have (as yet unmade), is the Revell East German Railway class 232 'Ludmilla' . It looks to be great quality. Been thinking of getting a Revell Prussian P8 too.

Hello MC2. Thank you for reminding me of that model. If I could have predicted the interest in this video when I made it I probably would have included what remains of my Coronation class loco. It was one of the first ones I built and it was a Kitmaster kit. It "ran" well but I don't recall its fate and all I have left of it is the main frames with the driving wheels, some connecting rods and valve gear, the front bogie/wheels and the rear pony truck. I don't think Airfix ever included that in their range. Perhaps the moulds got damaged.

I don't know if you know it but the correct number for City of Truro at the time of preservation was 3717. It was returned to it's former number of 3440 to reflect on it's appearance when it reportedly became the first loco to reach 100 MPH. Great video David. I too built many of those kits in the early to mid 60s, wish i still had them. I have a few Airfix kits waiting to be built inc the thatched cottage, Country Inn and a petrol station.Do you think Dapol have kept the quality that was Airfix? I often pass Dapol`s headquarters in Chirk and would love to get some more kits especially Rocket. Very interested to see Cheshire on your cup. I am between Wigan and Bolton which almost seems to be on that map. Grew up near Horwich loco works.

Hi Philip, Thank you for great comments and question.I regret losing my original Kitmaster Deltic and Coronation Scot. I did not show my original Airfix buildings but I still have them including those you mention. I intend to show them in a future video. Dapol are still using the same moulds as far as I know and 50 plus years on they are getting worn and I don't think the plastic is up to the same quality as that used in the 1960's so the answer to your question is "no." Cheers, David.

Hi, Thank you for viewing, commenting and a great question. The ones I have that roll the best are the Kitmaster and Airfix ones. The moulds were clean and tight back in the 1950's and 60's when those two companies owned them. They also used a much harder plastic that holds it's shape and dimension better than what Dapol is using today in the same moulds which are really badly worn out after 60 years of use. I have heard that Dapol would like to drop these products and scrap the moulds but hobby dealers keep ordering them so production continues. When building them I am very careful to ensure that the frames are glued together square and that the axle holes line up across the frames as perfectly as possible. I test each axle in the frames to be sure they do not bind anywhere. Very careful filing is often required. Once the wheel sets are installed in the frames I push the assembly back and forth on a piece of track applying downward force to bed the axles in. When satisfied I lubricate the axles with graphite powder and then proceed with the the rest of the build testing each moving part as it's assembled. I add weight as low down as possible. As a child these kits were built in a day or two, now as an adult it can take me several weeks to complete a kit. Hope this helps. Take care and be safe. Regards, David.

You have quite a mass of kit building you assembled along the way. Do these have motors? I am assuming not the way you roll them around. I've seen one very much like the General on the hoove. It sits in the Sacramento, California Railroad Museum. Probably not the same one. I think this one was used to build the continental railroad of the US.

When Airfix bought out Kitmaster the biggest mistake was not re-releasing the LMS Garrett but apparently the moulds where badly worn. Pity as it was popular and I ha e seen some motorised. Which brings me to model railway producers. It has only been recently that you can buy Ready To Run garratts. I am still waiting for a Z class 0-8-0 or the Garrett William Francis or the Leader and U1 LNER Garret

Hello Michael, It seems to me that Airfix could have made some profit had they re made the moulds and I can't understand why Dapol don't make new moulds for the Deltic's windows. I wonder if sales had been low for the Garrett? ....David.

David Atkins Yes I have often thought that Airfix and Dapol could have made a bit of profit over the Garrett and Deltic perhaps as you say sales were not as expected I don’t know. Better marketing needed I have seen a model scrap yard that the owner had made using plastic kits. It was very impressive. Do you know if Dapol will continue to produce these and perhaps new kits in the future ?? Happy modelling 👍🇦🇺🇦🇺

David Atkins Hi David the scrap yard I saw was just a part of a large model railway exhibition I went to a while ago. I was just filling up a small corner of the overall layout but was very effective I thought. Most of the locos were plastic kits with a few old real ones thrown in The majority of the locos were painted in a rust coloured paint with a little grey streaking on the boiler. And a thinned water wash over the numbers connecting rods removed some stuck on foot plates All very effective. You may be able to find something similar on KZbin if you target model railway exhibition. The one I saw has now been dismantled and moved on 😁👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

Hi, I'm building the Dapol 4MT model, but I'm having issues with the wheels- they don't roll very freely, do you have any tips?
@trainsontuesday
@trainsontuesday 4 жыл бұрын
Hi thank you for viewing and your comments and question. The problem with today's Dapol versions of these kits is that they are using the same moulds that Kitmaster made in the 1950's and they are really worn out. I would suggest custom fitting each wheel into the hole in the side frame by testing it and filing with fine toothed mini files to get a smooth fit that doesn't bind in a full rotation and pushed all the way into the frame. Be sure to file the axle not the hole. It's slow tedious work but worth it. Also check the back-to-back of the individual wheel sets. I have had to adjust that with tiny shims on the ends of the axles where they join together. The other very important area to watch is the quartering of the wheels. Again as the moulds are worn the "D" shaped pieces where the axles join together is not as precise as it should be and if the wheels are not precisely quartered the rods will lock up when the wheels turn. I have an original Kitmaster one of these, built by someone else. It is not all that free rolling and I have my Airfix version as shown in my video that I built in the 1960's that rolls very well and I have a new Dapol one to build. I may encounter the same problems that you have and so I'll be able to test my own advice. I can see that I shall have to do a follow up to this video addressing some of these issues. Stay safe out there and happy modeling. Regards, David.

@trainsontuesday 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thank you for subscribing to my channel. The answer to your question is "no." They are not all free running unfortunately. The best running ones are the older ones, the Kitmaster and Airfix ones. The moulds for these are now over 60 years old and are becoming very worn so the later Dapol versions are difficult to get running smooth. I do spend quite a bit of time trying to align everything to make them roll as free as possible. Regards, David.
