Part 1 of my trains and planes at Gatwick video: In this video I make a short distance journey to the 2nd biggest London airport, Gatwick.
Gatwick Airport is operated by Gatwick Express, with additional services being provided by Southern, Thameslink, and Great Western Railway, along with freight services as well, and the station has 7 platforms.
Station History: Gatwick had it’s first station opened 1891 to serve the nearby Racecourse. In 1946, the station was renamed to Gatwick Racecourse. However, the station fell out of usage after a new station opened which at the time was called Tinsley Green. Tinsley Green would be renamed to Gatwick Airport in September 1935. In the 1950s the government decided to expand and develop the airport into London’s 2nd biggest airport, and as a result Gatwick Racecourse was rebuilt to serve the airport, which also resulted in Gatwick Racecourse being renamed to what we know as today, Gatwick Airport. Tinsley Green’s services were discontinued as a result of Gatwick Airport. Later on the old station was demolished. Today, Gatwick is a busy airport with lots of passengers coming through from all over the world. Just recently the station was expanded from 6 platforms to 7 platforms and just now is going under upgrades for helping with the amount of passengers coming through everyday.
