The SD40-2 as well as SD40T-2 and the C30-7.....it amazes me how the SDs and C30-7 models still run in South America....some C30-7 models still in BN paint in broad gauge....

It doesn't matter how many locomotives ge and other biulders come out with. YOU WILL NEVER BEAT THE EMD SD40-2SAND THE SD40S. THESE LOCOMOTIVES HAVE WITHSTOOD THE TEST OF TIME!THEY ARE WELL KNOWN FOR THEIR ABILITY TO HAUL HEAVY TRAINS UP A GRADE. THEY ARE VERY RELIABLE, EASY TO MAINTAIN, EASY TO OPERATE, AND THEY ARE VERY DEPENDABLE LOCOMOTIVES!EMD HAS A REAL WINNER IN THE SD40/40-2S. I REMEMBER WHEN THIS LOCOMOTIVE FIRST CAME OUTOF EMD BACK IN THE LATE 60S. I GOT A CHANCE TO RIDE IN ONE ON THE L&N RAILROAD. I WONT EVER FORGET THAT NUMBER SHE HAD, SHE WAS NUMBER 1258, THE FORST ONE I RODE IN. THESE GIRLS CAN PULL A FREIGHT! GET YOU FOUR OF THESE, AND THEY WILL LIFT TONNAGES OVER GRADES AND AT SPEEDS NO OTHER LOCOMOTIVE CAN MATCH. SHE HAS PROVEN TO BE A GREAT AND VERY RELIABLE LOCOMOTIVE. I LIKE THEM.AND IM SURE THAT THE PEOPLE WHO OPERATE THEM LIKE THEM,TOO..❤

Used to hear them at full throttle while waiting at a road crossing in my home town. Later, I was lucky to be part of the maintenance crew for them. We had Alco's, GE's and EMD's. The EMD's were by far the coolest to work with.

I read an article once in an issue of CTC Board magazine from the late '90s or early 2000s. in that article was 2 or 3 candid interviews with veteran engineers in which they asked them point blank "who builds em better..?" I remember one of the engineer's responses particularly in which he talked about how "both brands built locomotives with capabilities far beyond what they would have ever thought possible." he went on to say : "but if you wanna talk quality, craftsmanship, ease of repairs, great operating characteristics, & ease of operation.... well then you're obviously talking about the SD40-2." & I remember his next statement vividly..... "they were as close to perfect as it ever got.!"

To me, they are the most popular and most reliable diesels in the world today.these emd locomotives has a very good reputation for reliability, trouble free , ease of maintenance, and quality they offer, more than ant other builders locomotives. You just can't beat them for their quality, their reliability, their ease of maintenance. ILL TAKE THEM OVER ANY OTHER LOCOMOTIVE BUILDER,ANY DAY!I CALL THEM,

Wow! What a thorough overview. Thank you! SD/GP dash 2s are my favorite. Once you get to know the module test points values, they're pretty good to troubleshoot. Just as I was getting better with them, they started replacing with computers 😅. I do miss "T" motors. Reminds me of Southern Pacific, my favorite RR

The GP38-2s that are actually depowered GP40/-2s are usually left with the turbos, but the shafts have been pinned so that the turbo can't overrun and thus it remains a simple air pump. This is why you might notice a unit designated a "GP38-2" might have a turbo sound at idle.

Here in Australia we had 2 versions of the SD 40. In Western Australia, the L class, not sure how many, but a few, some are still around, but a lot have been scrapped, and in Victoria, the C class, only 10 were built, and all 10 are still working. They were built by Clyde Engineering. They were shorter and lighter, due to some weight and dimension problems. But a much revered locomotive here in Australia.

you forgot to mention the differences between the standard SD series and the DASH 2 series. The one well liked improvement was a water sight glass on the engineer side toward the rear of the long hood. The ripped supports along the blower housing and the slight overhand of the cab's angler roof. This and the new longer truck designs. Hope this helps.

The "CP Rail" train was actually a D&H train, they were considered D&H up to SK Yard until D&H was officially merged into CP and no longer a subsidiary. The PLM units were around until the late 90's at least.

As a Brazilian i wish u could at least mention the DDM-45s, it is a Sd45 but with the DDs trucks and the M is metric or maybe modified to run in 1 meter gauge and we still have a lot of second hand SDs and some T too running here same to the C30-7 like in total 700 to 800 units was imported in the late 2000s

The CNJ-LV wreck was Dec. 26, 1965. Three LV C628s with 155 cars collided with a CNJ train that was delivering two new L&HR C420s. The CNJ train had 32 cars, but I'm not sure if the L&HR units were considered cars or locomotives in the train. I think they were dead-in-tow.

It's safe to say that eventually in the future when every unit is only Wabtec/GE there will still be GP40-2's & SD40-2's leftover given prolonged usage.I wouldn't be surprised that those units will outlive any of these modern EMD & GE rebuilds in which most of them aren't even that great anyways.Even though resorted to being road switchers most of the time nowadays,it still counts. EMD began to go downhill after discontinuing both series of units because everything else they possibly have manufactured after that has always created problems here and there. The major issue was inevitably these emissions regulations. While Wabtec/GE has surpassed CAT/EMD in the traction category they've retained with traction motors that load quickly, both DC & AC.Obviously the main factor is that the EMD 567,645,and 710 series don't catch on fire or fall apart like GE's 7FDL's & 7HDL's. This about sums up the only pros that EMD units have upheld over GE units in the long run.The only true error that I can think of on newer EMD units that absolutely sucks is their dynamic braking. Aside from those units, the other reliable units I personally will add are the MP15DC's/AC's which have always been great road switchers. At some point that's how things will be,the majority of EMD units will be tracksided for local jobs and road switching while the hard work with serious tonnage and dealing with rough terrain will be handed over to Wabtec/GE.

The EMD SD40-2 is my favorite diesel-electric locomotive. I'm trying to learn as much about this amazing diesel-electric engine as I can. Can anyone enlighten me on the difference between the SD40-2 and the SD40T-2? Is the SD40T-2 a "special duty" version of the SD40-2? What does the "T" in SD40T-2 stand for? Thanks in advance for any information you can provide on the AWESOME SD40-2.

@@Trains21 I'm also from India, by watching your videos, I get so many information of US railroads. Please make a video over the Locomotives of Indian Railways. But sadly Indian Railways is purging out their Diesel locomotives from their roster. And now, no new Diesel locomotives are manufactured. Indian Railways is much more interested in electric locomotives, hence a much more environmentally friendly locomotives to be built for the entire IR system.
