EMD fan here! I really like that boxed nose on the front of the SD70ACe. Anytime I come across an old standard cab GP model it always gets my full attention. I miss the railroads of the 80's

As a railfan, I love EMD's. Our GP39-2R's rebuilt from GP30's are my favorite, and I love the spartan cab 60 and 70 series EMDs too. I'd like to see those GP30 carbody units receive yet another lease on life with a microprocessor control system like EM2000 or QES, and CCB26 electronic air brakes. Heck, even the ACes grew on me after a few years of working with them. That being said - As a mechanical employee, I prefer GE/Wabtec - there is one thing that gives them the cutting edge, and that is the much better quantity of technical support than Progress rail provides. I also love how they sound in notch 8. The "computer issues" you describe happen both on EMDs and GEs, no matter if they are FIRE or ICE screens on EMDs, or IFD or SDIS screens on GEs, and a hard reboot with the knife switch pulled is almost always one of the things to try to get any computerized locomotive behave right.

@stephenbroughman32312 жыл бұрын
Railroads don’t care about how they look, only how they perform. In actuality, they look very much like the same locomotives until you get up close.
@SocialistDistancing2 жыл бұрын
That's A very informative video and a few good quotes in there. I used to be able to tell you what every locomotive was at a glance, until the late 80s. I stopped paying close attention and now they all look the same. Now, I'd have to see the markings under the unit number. However, I always liked the EMDs.

Business decisions, with the magnitude of locomotive costs, are not made on wining and dining, but on cost, efficiency, quality, ease of maintenance, and many other factors. It is obvious that GE presented a better quality product and service. That is why they captured 70% market share. If Progress rail can come up with the same, they will do better.
@timmyfrierson26842 жыл бұрын
GE for sure, because they are the workhorse of the railroad they will out pull a EMD all day long
@jeffreycole98342 жыл бұрын
I am more of an EMD fan also. A big part of the reason is that Jeffrey Immelt of GE took $ millions in a redevelopment grant about 30 years ago, and instead of upgrading the factory, Immelt shut down the plant and spent the money on something entirely different. Hundreds lost their jobs since the grant wasn't spent on it's intended purpose. Add to that, It is my opinion that EMD loco's are more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I also like the way the EMD's are designed and engineered. That is my opinion of them.

From one account I've read, EMD's own hubris left the door wide open for GE to woo customers with better customer service. They took the time to listen to what the railroads were asking.

The SD70M-2’s aren’t really all that great for the crews. While it’s a novelty to see them as railfans, a lot of crews don’t like them because half of them on CN and most if not all on NS were thundercabs. Not to mention all the confusing computers and electronics on board that fail a lot (at least on mountains with their sanders) and some are getting a little old and some are starting to blow a lot more smoke. The ACe is really the way to go in most situations, when they have a whisper cab at least.

You're right, I call the SD7OACe's, Brahma Bulls. They definitely have the look and win out on the sound. Now, if CAT/EMD can tie everything else back together again? Alittle competition never hurts. GE has stepped up. From what I've heard, their older units, u-boats, where garbage. Will EMD/CAT/Progressive take the Bulls by the horn? Or will Wabtec/GE win the bull fight? 🤔 Gored or Olé?

EMD had a long track record of having a great product, introduce one bad model and seems like everyone drops them. Guitar makers consistently make thousands of electric guitars every year that don't stay in tune, ppl praise them and pay really obscene money for 'collectable' examples. the world makes so much sense to me right now.....

EMD FOR THE WIN BRUH 😂 with EMD you can do such more it seems, there many more rebuilts, you can make like 6 vareints of 1 locomotive type, like with the standers ACE you got the M-2, IAC, ACS, ACE-BB, T4 ACe ECT, EMD engines like you said do last longer, while GE engines are very tough, GE are built a lil more cheap that's why the dash 8-9 where consistly burning up, many more reasons, on the other hand GE locomotive are very good for DP survice, they have very well made locos like the GE genesis or es44 bla bla 😂 there so many reason, butt 🍑 both locomotives do have safe cabs, good truck design, air intakes pretty good, even though I think EMD locomotive are more costomizible, both EMD and GE have really good rebuilts in mind, kinda just depends on what you look for in a locomotive, either way both compines have came really far in my eyes 👀

GEs AC power will always be better. Evident by the miles of 70MACs parked or scrapped by BNSF. If they were good we would see them and not the ES44ACs. DC power, the EMD 645 all day.
