The bizarre roll out of the Rail Operations Group Tri-Mode Class 93 program continues - The first class example arrived into Bristol Portway docks from Stadler Valencia in Jun-23. The loco spent the majority of the remainder of 2023 at Wabtec Loughborough and mostly HNRC Worksop.
The loco finally surfaced in early Jan-24 and was dragged to Crewe Coal Yard by 37901 for static testing with coaching stock. it quickly returned back to HNRC and bizarrely hasn't been seen again more than 3 months - What is happening with the loco class certification and testing..????
Up to 10 class 93's were due to be shipped to the UK in 2023 - These are still at Stadler in Valencia and can be seen running around their in-house test track with no sign of shipping to the UK.
Another example of modern day bureaucracy creating crazy length delays on the UK railway network...????

This is happening a lot nowadays with the locos that come to the Uk. They get shipped over, run only a couple times and then sit in storage for months without much testing or they get returned back to where they were built.

Come on most locomotives that come here are running in service within a few weeks. Units are a different story

It was due to undertow testing at RIDC (Old Dalby) which has been shut since December due to a landslip.

Whilst it's at Worksop, there were some light loco test runs from Worksop to Sheffield last week (twice a day in each direction Monday-Friday) on RTT, though non of them ran. If they were intended to be 93 runs then we may be close to further action🤞

I think the Class 93 looks very smart and I like that shade of green. It sounds quite mighty as well! A nice addition to the UK main line. When do you expect it to reappear for more trial runs?

They bought them for what appeared to be a contract with Grand Union and somewhere along the line, GU switched their traction plan for Voyagers instead of Push pull sets? Surely ROG are scrambling round for work for these and if the c37s are doing good, them, without work, the cl93s are surplus ? Just a thought .. 🤔

@annatrindall9829 lol nice one Anna .. yes, I mean, technically, the 93 is unproven, and so far, has sat alone whilst 93002 to 93010 have sat awaiting a shipping date amd what they are going to be doing is uncertain

@@johnson_street_IEMD it just begs the question WHY spend all that money on new locomotives and then not use them? Doesn't make sense to me at all. Surely they could be used for freight, or maybe on the sleeper..

@annatrindall9829 I think, listening to the dialogue, it's also something down to certification from NR but beyond that, it does seem like they are keeping their intentions quiet for them.

The problem is in my opinion that they are building them in Spain like the EMUs & DMUs but their spec on the OHLE is completely different to here in the UK, hence they’re having to do a lot of software programming to get them to work. Look at those EMUs that LNWR ordered a while ago, they are only just coming into service after being delivered ages ago, some still awaiting in sidings to be commisioned.

They were ordered for specific jobs, but in the time between ordering, and delivery, this work dried up. There is a current huge surplus of electric locos in the UK, but a huge diesel loco shortage. Vthey should have ordered diesels or bi mode.

But it hasn’t ran on the mainline it’s been towed. The loco hasn’t ran under its own power on the UK network

Ordering locos and then not using them is what happens when you let Tocs come up with whatever they want built anywhere but UK and then not required to pay for them, British Rail pays the bill. Not rocket science to stop Derby closing down and design and build engines and coaching stock here again. We are, or were, quite good at it example Mark 3 coaches in use daily well over 40 years and clas 90 and 91 locos in service for the same amount of time. The Spanish units for Transpennine services just about managed 3 years! BR stock and locos were on test for that amount of time before entering service!

Except that there is no such thing as 'British Rail' and these locos are being funded by private businesses. And as its their cash they can do as they please. And if you think the UK was any good at building locos then your rose tinted glasses need changing. The list of troubled locos is long and sad. Apart from which Derby can't build locos. They build complete trains (EMU, DEMU,DMU).

There’s been a decent amount of online discussion over whether much of a market exists for the sort of niche these could take, and I tend to side against them. The class 99 seems a decent concept, with the high demand on similar class 66 roles; but these seem to be much more like the the class 67, which have shuffled around and struggled to find work too much of the time.

The 93 has issues with network rail. They will not release the paperwork for it to run until it’s sorted. Also the unions need to pass it as well The 99 is a unknown quantity at the moment. But are slated to work out of Felixstowe at the moment. We will see.

why didn't ROG just keep the 47s and 57s instead of giving them to GBRF and buying new trains

Because they are old, past worn out and the parts supply for them is getting non-existent. 57004 was basically scrapped to keep the small GWR fleet in service, and even then 57312 is on hire for the PAD-RDG shunt release job

Sorry to be a killjoy, don't like the shape of the 93. I first saw this type of locomotive on the back of a low-loader leaving Portbury docks a few months ago... There just doesn't seem to be any character to it... Sorry, just my opinion though.

The last UK locomotive to have any flair or character so far is the 68 in my opinion. Problem is that all to most new locomotives will be either electric or bi-mode

I see what you mean but unless you add a small generator or run them with a generator vehicle a pure electric loco is useless to ROG which is why diesel bi mode and even tri mode makes sense to have
