The ending of the first one implies that there is hope, that generation y can actually leave all this shit behind and become something, and than T2 happened, and shows that no matter what, generation y is destant to fail and not achieve anything. I love both movies, watching b2b can be a real rollercoaster. I am glad that Dany Boyle didn't adapt Porno (the book sequal) couse that was just more like Trainspotting 1,5.

Spud knew the implications of walking out. He was too much of a coward to do so. Renton cleaned up and took advantage of the situation and walked out with the idea of a new beginning for himself.

Lmfao this hits so hard. Growing up I had insomnia and I was always last to bed and first to wake. Nothing like waking up at dawn when everyone else is sleeping until noon. I would go home and come back. I remember one time it was 2pm and everyone was still sleeping in the basement and my friends dad goes “Wait? Why are you coming in? ARE THEY STILL SLEEPING!” He opens the door to the basement and yells “WAKE UP GUYS!!! I didn’t even know you were down there!”. They did not really wake up I just went down and played snake on my flip phone for another hour until they actually got up.

I have always thought that too, it is just completely magical and SO memorable.. I have watched this scene so many times over the Years - still it blows me away and as much as I want 'T2' (or whatever they decide to call it) to be amazing I know in my heart there will never be anything as good as this in it. The scenes and their accompanying music (born slippy.nuxx being the best track on the soundtrack but certainly not the only fantastic one) take Trainspotting to another level which I don't think the new film will be able to match.

The ending is a perfect parallel to the beginning of the movie: modern music compared to Iggy Pop (changing habits/opening for new), he is not running from anything - he walks confidently in a straight line and it all happens in London, in a city full of opportunities to start all over again

The line: "I'm gonna be just like you.", is the best line in a movie. It's threatening, but it's not. Paradoxical. He's a bad person, so you don't want him around, but at the same time, he's choosing to leave a life of crime, and that should be commended.

Malcolm X can relate, he used to be a criminal in his reckless youth, that’s what got him sent to the slammer. It was that reality check wake up call that got him to turn his life around and began a journey that would eventually lead to becoming the iconic man he’s remembered as today. Malcolm once said on the subject of his criminal past that “It’s no shame to have BEEN a criminal, the shame is to CONTINUE being a criminal.”

He's embracing societal expectations and changing one addiction for another, but he hasn't found meaning in it. He's hyperobsessing about being normal, to the viewer he comes off as sinister because he's obviously not normal, he just outgrew his friends. Not an evil person at all and that's what makes him terrifying, he's a manipulator and he's putting on a new mask.

My three favorite things about this ending: 3) Begbie tearing the room apart, 2) The Song and 1) The unspoken exchange between Renton and Spud. Sa Kese Begbie was a sadist, which was the main problem. The only time Renton acted like a good person was when he had been off heroin. And in Trainspotting 2 Begbie does a bunch of drugs. And in the book Renton murders a dog for no reason. None of them are “good” characters. Renton was a huge sadist in the book, which was left out of the movie so that you have a clear “bad guy vs good guy.” Renton is just as big of a piece of shit as Begbie in his true character, arguably more so.

At the 1:25 mark, Renton isn't looking at himself in the mirror. Rather, he's looking directly at the camera. At us. Through his eyes, you can HEAR him saying "can you believe I'm about to do this? That WE'RE about to do this?" That little detail and the madness we feel in that moment is amazing. A great little piece of storytelling and cinematography.

You can feel the room and you can feel what Renton is feeling as well. Add the music and you can feel the buzz and excitement of breaking away and starting fresh. Then when he gets outside and he's free you're almost smiling with him. We only have a handful of instances like that in life where we can sieze an oppertunity early. Everything about this scene is perfect.

What a great ending. It shows Renton was truly unhappy with the life he was currently in. Given the rare opportunity to truly turn his life around with the money they were given, he knew it was either him or them. He knew if he had stuck with the crew they would've dragged each other down despite the victory. The "minor" betrayal as he puts it signifies how they voluntarily have no true respect for each other or themselves. A big betrayal would've been to someone who doesn't deserve it. Sick Boy was an opportunist that didn't truly persue a better life, Begbie was a psycho inevitablely heading for prison, Spud just wasn't so sure about making a bold decision as he was a vulnerable person (hence why he left some aside for him). I do wonder how Trainspotting 2 is going to pan out.

This was a beautiful film, even after 20 years or so. It's an ode to youth in my eyes. Even if they're junkies they share the troubles of any youth, not knowing what to do in the future, hatred of complacency, desire to be loved, and so on but its just wonderful. It has made me appreciate my youth 10000 times over.

That part scared the crap out of me because I thought at the time Spud who alert the other two of Renton leaving. Perfect timing of the smoke hitting Renton in the face and keying in Born Slippy, showing the exact moment he knew he was going to leave with the money. Also like that Renton takes the glass full of filthy looking alcohol and pouring clear water into it, presenting him escaping heroin to a cleaner life. Best possible payoff to the whole film.

I think the beauty of it though (that is if you view T1 in a vacuum without considering any of the novels & T2) was that it was left ambiguous as what kind of trajectory Renton's life was actually heading from that point onwards. Anyone who has has lived with a heavy addiction will know how fucking tempting having that kind of cash out of nowhere would be, and would be way too familiar with how shallow the empty declarations he's making to himself sound. I'm glad it was left as open ended as it is though because it's almost like as Rorsarch test. People who have lived the life will see it one way and those who haven't might interpret another. imo even the way Renton slowly goes out of focus as he walks towards the camera reinforces this - a visual metaphor alluding to how hard it is to discern what he is doing, what kind of future lies in store for him

One of the great ending scenes from one of the best films of the '90s. One detail that amuses me, though: Sick Boy and Spud sit outside the hotel room until the fuzz turns up then leave in a hurry. The best scene for me in 'Trainspotting' is this, the last one, it's extraordinary. The cinematography is superb. The bit where Begbie blows the smoke into Renton's face in provocation is the catalyst for Rents to think 'fuck this'!! Another metaphorical symbol that i thought was clever was him washing out the Buckfast out the glass and rinsing out the glass and drinking the clean, pure water. It's almost like he had decided to cleanse himself of the poison that had infiltrated his life and wanted a clean break, starting from that moment. The tension as he tries to prise the holdall from Begbie's clutches still gets me everytime. And with 'Born Slippy' kicking in the whole scene is just so so fucking iconic.
