Stena Line Hook of Holland - Harwich great rail & sail between Amsterdam & London

The connection by boat between Hook of Holland, near Rotterdam in The Netherlands & Harwich has always been a great connection for rail passengers between Europe & Great Britain. Even though Hook of Holland doesn't have international trains anymore and the local domestic trains have been replaced by a metro, this is still a great connection for railway passengers as well between The Netherlands & Great Britain. Due to the short travel time, the night crossing is also very time efficient.
You find a goof public transport connection on both sides of the water, making this a perfect link between for example Amsterdam & London but also other cities in The Netherlands like The Hague & Rotterdam (and even Belgium, Germany and for passengers traveling more to Northern Europe) and the UK. From Harwich international you also find direct trains to Cambridge for example.
On this route there are two vessels, the Stena Hollandica & the Stena Brittanica. These ships are identical from each other, so you always have a ferry that looks very similar.

My father was born in Parkstone and when he left school in Summer 1939 he went to work on the Harwich - Hook of Holland ferries until the service was suspended. I have used the service many times over the years always using trains at either end. My father used to tell me about the big "boat trains" to London and last time I went it was a just a two car local train.

Excellent video, thank you TrainViking, I went on Stena Britannica a few weeks ago and I love travelling on NS around the Nederlands, also I can recommend to everyone the Torpedoloods and Badhuis Hotel in HoekVH, 1 minute walk from the Metro Station, friendly and excellent💗 Uitstekende video, bedankt TrainViking, ik ben een paar weken geleden met de Stena Britannica geweest en ik reis graag met NS door heel Nederland, ook kan ik iedereen het Torpedoloods en Badhuis Hotel in HoekVH aanbevelen, 1 minuut lopen van het metrostation, vriendelijk en uitstekend💗

Hey, thanks for the video; it was useful for a spontaneous trip this week. I was travelling on an Interrail pass but discovered that there were no Interrail Eurostar tickets left on the day I had to return home, then suddenly remembered your video -- there is another way back to the UK 🙂 I travelled on a daytime sailing. Just to note about your remark that there are plenty of power sockets: on the day sailings it seems that a few passengers immediately claim the good seats by the windows, which are (almost) the only ones with power sockets (some people just went to sleep there!) and for most of the trip there was no available power socket to be found. A bit inconvenient for such a long trip. Also as another commenter noted, the deck layout and facilities seem to have changed recently. It seems there is no longer a Taste Plus restaurant (it was advertised on their website just a few days ago but there was no sign of it on board yesterday). Some things like the Barista Bar (which is sadly just a coffee machine operated by the receptionist) have moved. The shop is bigger, at the expense of seating; I guess selling alcohol in bulk is how they make their money...

I would definitely take a cabin in a day crossing - as it would be nice to have a space where you can relax in private, stow luggage, shower/freshen up and grab a nap.

Breakfast on the overnight ferries is expensive and not very good. When travelling to England I just have a coffee on the boat then get the first train from Harwich which is the local shuttle to Manningtree. Manningtree station has an excellent buffet which does a really good breakfast for much lower cost after which you can just hop onto the next London bound train and still be in Liverpool Street before 9am...

Jaren geleden (1987) met de mytylschool naar Engeland geweest voor een uitwisselingsproject met een school op een uurtje van Nottingham. Twee keer de nachtboot, heen de Britanica terug de Hollandica . Mooie herinnering, bij het zien van deze video

That would explain why things weren't quite the same on my journey this week! Honestly though, I think the changes have made the experience worse; less space to sit (the duty-free shop has expanded into what used to be a lounge) and there seems to be no more Taste Plus restaurant.

Took it in 1973 and 1976 from Amsterdam to hook by what they called the bootrein!

Well it was a combined ticket in both instances as it included rail from Amsterdam boat from hook and again rail from harwich to London Liverpool station and I think the train from Amsterdam did made some stops on the way to the boat that in both instances was a Dutch one

die kastjes in de tv kamer lijkt er op dat je daar een koptelefoon in kan steken, en die knopjes zouden dan voor het geluid kunnen zijn zo dat je je eigen taal kan kiezen

Ik wil graag die route gebruiken maar ik hou niet van s'nachts reisen. Dus moet ik met Eurostar reisen. But I have given you a thumbs-up.

Dankjewel, overdag is dit ook zeker leuk. Echter als je uit Londen gaat moet je vrij vroeg op en andersom overdag gaag de boot wat later uit Nederland waardoor je ook weet relatief laat in Londen bent (of andere plekken). Algemene tip voor de Eurostar naar Londen, als je dit vanaf Rotterdam boekt is het vaak goedkoper omdat er daar meer ruimte is voor douane.

Ik kan deze route juist wél voor de nacht aanraden. 's Avonds inchecken in HvH, 's nachts lekker slapen (echt waar, prima hutten!) en 's morgens uitgeslapen aankomen in Harwich en fris aan de dag in Engeland beginnen. Al meermalen gedaan en ook voor komende zomer alvast geboekt.

De nacht verbinding heeft gunstige vertrek en aankomst tijden, maar persoonlijk vind ik de nacht overtocht met auto veel te duur waardoor ik meestal uitwijk naar de korte overtocht van Duinkerken naar Dover!

Met de auto zal ik het niet weten, er is zeker een prijsverschil. Echter zie ik het ook als kosten die je anders maakt voor een hotel, dus op die manier is het best schappelijk allemaal.

Yes, it's not possible - even Dover is not Victoria. The only route from Victoria is Newhaven Dieppe.

je krijgt ook 30% korting als je een geldige interrail pas hebt en mooie is het kost je geen reisdag. de korting krijg je dacht ik niet bij rail and sail maar alleen bij een overtocht.
