I have fond memories of MR magazine, specifically the one featuring the HO scale Ranton Pass Route.

Take a stab at it! The nice thing about virtual railroading is that it doesn't cost much money and the possibilities are as endless as your imagination. And nothing is permanent either so if you mess up you can easily undo or delete what you don't like. Glad I got you inspired to get started :-D
@billdeloach58688 жыл бұрын
Well here's what I got. I'm wondering about the staging, should I go on with all of it? some of it? You mentioned you may use "portal", wth is that? Screenshot: prntscr.com/dy2p12
@ApproachMedium8 жыл бұрын
Wow, looks just like mine! I built my own freehand staging which you'll see in episode 2. I found that the way the track plan had the tracks laid out wasn't possible in the game. I'm going to use a portal for the UP branch that diverges from the main just outside of Barstow. Looks like you didn't include that spur on your map though. If you're not familiar with portals, they're like tunnels you can use to spawn trains onto and off of the map. I like using iPortals because you can send trains between maps. Check out the Trainz wiki. Keep me posted and feel free to send me an email too ;-)

100% for me and I'll tell you something else I love how you said about the turnouts plus the numbers. I'll tell you something else to, when you was doing the ladder track you could have also use the advanced setting to insert the spline too
@ApproachMedium8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I find that depending on the angle or curve of the track, sometimes inserting a spline point can cause the track to have an awkward bend or shape. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'll play around some more though to see what works best.

I found this after wondering if digital model railroading is a thing. As someone who lives in a small apartment, doesn't have tons of money to invest in modeling, and has no relevant skills, this looks like a really fun way to realize something I always wanted to do as a kid.

Just discovered your Needles layout. Great! Am backing into a project modeling the Arizona & California line between Wickenburg and Aguila, of all places (used to live in the former town when I was a kid). Needles backdrop is very similar country. Do you have any tips about photographing panoramas like this? Will be a trick because the division is 22 miles long in meatspace. Thanks in advance, -Ken

My ladders always look kinda choppy, my yards usually rely on splitting junctions. For example, I have a six track yard coming off the main, rather than having a ladder, usually I have two splitting junctions and the other two tracks just fall into place around them. But it works, because I model the steam and early diesel era, back then there weren't as many straight lines and long yards, railyards were fatter with lots of twists and turns to accommodate maintenance facilities for steam engines.

Tip for making turnouts. Use a ruler and measure from the center of the diamond out, for yard ladders and industry switches depending on location and layout, go about 45 to 60 feet in each direction where the points of the curve in the turnout will touch and then place your track at the outer end of each ruler.
@ApproachMedium7 жыл бұрын
Great tip! I'll have to give that a try. ;-)

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure what they're selling point was. Especially since I guess all TMR content is compatible with T:ANE and vise versa. It feels like it was mostly a way to sell a bunch of routes as a bundle. Maybe the hardware requirements are better for slower machines as well?
