One of the things that makes this difficult is the tension between wanting to be a provider (I mean, actually wanting to do that, not just having it as a check box on a list) and setting boundaries. It's easy to start giving too much of yourself when providing because you're essentially putting the needs of others before your own. Perhaps the key lies somewhere in providing for needs without question, but for wants in a more critical manner. Of course there are other boundaries outside of providing that a man needs to maintain also, such as being respected when it's deserved.

I’ve done all these things…however, I’ve been in several dates where a girl is offended that I pay, open the door, or anything along those lines. I would open a door for a stranger - however it feels like dates are a platform for the woman to prove she doesn’t need me. When I’m just trying to learn more about her in a comfortable, light hearted and respectful way. This happens at least 60-70% of the time. I’m at the point where I feel it’s a western culture thing.

Same as offering to pay; did you simply offer to pay, then happily agree to let her pay her share, or did you insist? I’m asking because one comes across as natural and the other appears forced cos you’re on a date. If you’re not forcing it and they’re still unhappy, then it sounds like she’s not the right girl for you. I can't understand the reasoning here. Women are portrayed as children that needs to be controlled. This is very strange to me. Women should be adults not expecting to be served on. We should all be adults and share in all tasks. Why should men protect and provide? It should be the task of everybody in a relationship. There are tasks to be performed in a family and they should be performed by the one that currently is not performing another task. In a family you are a team with equal responsibilities and all adults in a family should be able to and willing to perform any task whether it is doing the homework with the children or unblocking the sink.
