Great video! I really enjoyed that you filmed the comparison test at the end also, so we could see how it works. Thanks for sharing the video. 73's from Southeastern PA.

I just passed my technical license looking for antenna's for my handheld. Tis looks like a pretty cool antenna. Thanks for the video...

At first I used my handheld, it worked great. Then I bought a 2 meter mobile and use it in my home. I have the antenna mounted my attic now. It works GREAT! Thank you for watching my video!!

Can something like this be done with just a simple lowly Baofeng UV-5R? I’m extremely rural, and I’d just like to be able to hit repeaters that are 20 and 30 miles away from me. I can “kerchunk” them now with just the stock antenna, but it’s of no practical value. I want to be able to get in and USE these repeaters. I'm out in the country with extremely flat terrain (but lots of trees), and I have old barns FULL of junk I could make into antennas and masts. Tons of spools of wire (I bought the place with barns full of stuff, still mostly unexplored), stage lighting tripods that go up 10-20 feet, an obscene amount of PVC pipe, and hundred foot tall plus trees all around me. Are random wire antennas and such ONLY for HF (I'll get a nice HF rig when I can afford it), or can neat DIY things be done for 2m and 70cm as well? Even if a 2m/70cm antenna were to be small, isn’t HEIGHT STILL KING? Thanks!

UHF and VHF depends on line of sight. If you have hills between you. That can be a problem. But since you are hitting the repeaters. This antenna will give you a 8 dbi gain. I can't tell you for sure. But it will improve your signal strength so to speak.

@@RichRodgersOnline … Yeah, I’m on very flat ground at 120 feet above sea level and the repeaters I want to hit are in near by towns 20-30 miles away but are on very tall water towers in towns that are much higher; about 240 feet above sea level. Only trees in between…

@@SteveHacker It might be better to get a 50 watt or more transceiver. You might find more hams and more repeaters.... You can some times find them used at a good price.

Hi Rich, Great video. I have the Tram 1481 and it is a surprising performer. Mine had the same connector input and a PL259 tightened right up and snuggly at that. Perhaps both it and the N-connector will work. Mine is on a 105 foot tower so the only precaution I took was to seal the section connections with clear silicone in liberal amounts and thoroughly wrapped the section connectors with Scotch 3M Super 33 tape rather liberally as well. The 1481 is known to have moisture issues. Bought mine cheap($84)through Staples. Moisture is a problem you shouldn't have in the attic, LOL! I can connect with 2 meter mobiles up to 30 miles away and average height repeaters up to 75 miles. A little less on 70 CM. Also flat SWR readings. 73s KX5E.

Thank you for watching my video! I think putting the silicone a wrapping the sections is a great Idea! I am using a Yaesu Mobile 80 watts for my transceiver. I am in OKC and spoke through a Stillwater, OK repeater (50 Miles) to a mobile he was wondering if I was a local. So it was a thrill for me to have him think I was a local with my antenna in the static . He said I was strong....

The PL-259 connector is correct as the antenna has a SO-239 connector. The author of this video is incorrect in saying it's an N connector.

I am not sure.... only one way to find out, try it.

How can you compare a base antenna with a portable antenna? Compare them alongside one of equal claims to performance and under same conditions. I use a Diamond x30 at home, yet on 5w from a woodland in a different area in a storm, reached out 30 miles with a Retevis 771 antenna on a Baofeng. I can't compare the two...two totally different working conditions
@RichRodgersOnline3 жыл бұрын
I think if you compare correctly, Both antennas should be pretty close to the same height using the same rig and the same coax.
@SuAmigoElilegal3 жыл бұрын
Does it makes a different when you buy a 5 foot , 7 gain antenna commet 100 bucks vs a 30 inch 2-3 gain antenna for 40 dollars, in range and quality sound
@RichRodgersOnline3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 100 dollar higher gain will get out further compared to the 3 db gain. However, if you are close to repeaters, then a 3 db probably will work okay

Is it recommend pvc or wood as a pole or metal? as a pole for the antenna mount to get it hight
@RichRodgersOnline3 жыл бұрын
I would mount it on a metal pole. I am not sure about the PVC and the Sun may cause the PVC to break down. You can use wood but then that may break down also. Thank you for watching my video!

Not sure what the frequency for GMRS? You will have to look at the specs of the antenna once you have found out.
