My top picks for north island hikes (a) Tongariro Crossing - yes I know it is too popular! Go guided if in the winter months - amazing scenery especially around Red Crater (b) Mt Taranaki summit - only do in summer on a good day - very hard day hike - great views (c) Ruapehu Crater Lake - you can make it easier by taking the gondola half way. No real track but not too hard to find your way. Go guided if in winter months (d) Te Puia hot pools - very picturesque river trail ending by some spa pools using natural hot water - be careful with putting your head under the water - you can do this as a day hike summer or winter or can stay at the hut (40 mins from the spa pools) or camp by the spa pools. Enjoy your tramping!
