I place the burner in a plastic bag inside of the pot and store the windshield upside-down so it does not scratch the nonstick frying pan. I stuff it in my backpack and enjoy a hot brew on the trail. Thank you for your fine review of the Trangia 28.

I have replaced the plastic protector with thin flexible cutting sheet. These are available most anywhere. I used the old protector as a template. Now I can slice and dice, adding zero weight, or bulk. Cheers!

Had mine since '89, an original pre-non stick lid version bought for rock climbing days out (incurred some slight dents/scratches from accidentally rolling down scree slopes in the Lake District), backpacking long distance trails, mountain bike and cycle touring. All parts are still going strong and original, no O ring replacement. Some folk judge by looks and think the grabber handle is cheap, the exact opposite is true as it's high quality sprung stainless steel. The only change I've made to it, and my tip to you and others considering getting or already have one, is mod the grabber handle with the addition of two key rings of suitable diameter, The first one is slid on so it will close the handle and lock it in place on the lid or frying pan. The other key ring is opened and twisted onto the handle so it retains the other key ring when it's slid back to open the handle.

I'm planning a solo ultralight bikepacking trip across the UK in spring and was going to take my 27 series, which I love, but I feel would be overkill for just boiling water for coffee and dehydrated meals. I've been looking at the 28 for a while and finally pressed 'Add To Basket' last night. I like the form factor and simple, smart design of this, plus it's half the weight of the 27 series. Looking forward to cooking on the trail later in the year! Nice review - great production values, as always.

I use my Mini once a year on a solo, cycle camping trip, when space & weight are critical. Simple, but effective. I agree that the way it clips together for transporting is a big plus point. We use a larger Trangia system when we travel by car. Often we cook with gas, but we always use the Trangia kettle, pots & pans.

I have the regular sized one with the coffee pot add-on. Inherited it from my parents. Has been running flawlessly since the '70s. We always let it burn out though, having been taught by experience not to trust the o-ring. Perhaps the new ones are better. I prefer the alcohol burners to the gas tubes. The gas stoves are less messy but I can't get rid of the feeling that I'm carrying around a bomb that might blow me up or gas me in my sleep.

I'm very happy with mine which has so far, given me sterling service. A little plastic zip loc tie, sized and snipped to suit and then turned inside out, slips nicely over the tongs, keeping them firmly closed for easier storage. I've also cut a heat-resistant silicon kitchen pot mat to fit inside the pan / lid. It affords additional protection for the non-slip surface and is useful when cooking on 'heat-sensitive' surfaces.

i like that there is still space in the pot for a spoon and some tea bags. from experience i found that storing the burner with fuel inside my swedish army mess kit there was some vapour release that tainted my pot tasted bloody horrible!. I see you didn't use the snuffer plate to limit the flame. Probably a good idea as if you were to ever use it for that reason it's impossible to move the plate over to snuff out the flame as it gets too hot, and the ridges get in the way of turning it even if you were to risk third degree burns to your hand. A decent bit of kit though. Although I am a bit concerned about how long the handle will last, as it feels a bit flimsy if the pot is full and needs to be fully tipped over to empty. Thanks for the video. 👍🏼

I basically never use the snuffer plate to limit the flame, I use it to extinguish it tottaly.

A small extending magnet (ie pen sized aerial type with magnet to pick up dropped screws/nuts etc) allows you to put in the and take out the simmer ring without burning yourself. Also useful for checking the ground for accidentally dropped items.

I had trouble lighting mine, and then had scary flames blowing out sideways, even with a folding windshield. Is the sideways flame normal in the wind? Can you use them with Trangia 27 winndshields? Can you light them with piezo (flameless) lighters?
@verysurvival4 жыл бұрын
sideways flame is normal from windy days, it normally settles down a bit once the burner heats up after a couple of minutes but if it is windy it will always blow the flame . The only thing you can do is protect it from the direct wind, Trangia 27 windshield fits. The burner is a standard size burner so it fits all the trangia range. The 27 you need the top and bottom parts to protect from the wind effectively. I have used it many times.
@verysurvival4 жыл бұрын
you probably can lighter it with a flameless lighter, but I bet it is a bit fiddly . I would say a normal lighter or matches or a wind proof butane lighter is better. Test it and find out! just be careful not to burn yourself :-)
@verysurvival4 жыл бұрын
It takes a bit of practice to light them. Don't put the flame directly into the fuel but kinda balance the flame on the top of the fuel surface and move it around a in gentle circular motion. You are trying to ignite the fuel that is evaporating into a gas right at the top of the liquid. if you just dunk your flame in the fuel it can be put out. practice it when it isn't windy. And try placing the flames at different areas of the burner until you find the sweet spot for igniting it. Sometines if you swill the fuel around so you get a coating of fuel on the edges these start to burn very easily
@alfred19254 жыл бұрын
@@verysurvival Good idea, I had similar and bought a 27, gas version. The meths burners from the mini fits as you say, and even fits in the small pot next to the gas burner when it's packed up.

Hi. I found that the windshield isn't that great when you're up a mountain and gagging for a brew so I cut a piece of four inch flexible steel fan ducting to slip over the windshield on gusty days. Works a treat and fits perfectly inside the pot. I also use long kitchen matches to light it. Just makes life a bit easier. Happy trails guys. Great video.

Is it possible to cook with the nonstick pan when it is used as a lid for the pot? Does it get hot enough? I'm considering between this and Vargo Ti-Boiler, but the problem with ti-boiler is that the pan is not non stick.
@verysurvival4 жыл бұрын
It gets hot enough to warm things but it’s not really gonna cook raw food. It’s relying on the steam from the sauce pan as heat mainly
@robertgilbert51123 жыл бұрын
Yes the lid was designed to fit the pot. Put water in the pot, pit lid on upside down. Fits great and the steam will heat the lid. With a small amount of oil/butter and over easy eggs will be just like mom used to make.

Wind shield is cheap sharp poorly made junk, throw it away and replace with an aluminium mini pot of about the same diameter (so it fits the groove of the main pot/frying pan - Ebay has loads) with a ring of holes drilled in the sides near the top and bottom for air, it makes an actual windshield and keeps the heat directed at the main pot/frying pan for much faster cooking times. I don't know what idiot at Trangia came up with possibly the most useless design ever for a wind shield! and the cheapest looking/made one at that. You could use aluminium foil and wrap it around, to block some of the wind, but modding a small pot makes it how it should have been from the factory. Also pack the burner with carbon felt, roll some up and insert then trim excess flush with the top using a stanley blade, that way if you ever knock it over the fuel wont spill...
@TasmanOutdoors Жыл бұрын
The handle I still think is fundamentally a crap design. Easy to scratch the non stick pan. Too easy and too clumsy.
