Trangia Mini - Field test and first impressions

👍👍👍 Hello .. from a South African living in Switzerland .. I have the Trangia Mini and it has served me well so far. Herewith some -'useless information' 🙄😏 regarding some mods that I have made to my set. Maybe others can benefit from this info 🤞. Dry conditions. I added a cut-to-size silicon kitchen mat, in addition to the supplied plastic disc, to protect the pan non-stick surface during storage and further protect 'heat-sensitive surfaces during cooking. I filled my Trangia Burner with Glass / Ceramic Wool, topped with a tight roll of Carbon Felt Matting (Flammenschutzmatten). This greatly reduces spillage and the associated Fire Risk during an accidental 'knockover'. The Burner lights up easier during really cold conditions .. stays lit even when the pot is put on immediately thereafter (not necessary to wait for the 'bloom') and the efficiency of the burn does not appear to be affected so as to be a problem. Actually, I appear to get a gentler flame, especially with the simmer ring .. which suits my style of cooking. The little pot grip is kept closed during storage using a plastic loc-tie trimmed to size and turned inside out. Easy to slip on and take off. The two larger bowls and the lid from an aluminium 'Evernew' Camping Bowl Set (circa '70's .. still visible on Googel) nest inside the Trangia Pot, together with the Pot Stand, Burner, etc and with the lid outside. A little folding tripod made from a SS Bicycle Spoke and Aluminium Ferrules is also part of the nest. Deployed, it fits inside the Pot Stand and accommodates the smaller camping bowl diameters. All are stored inside a 1970's 'Sea King' ditty bag. Should I need more capacity, all of the above-mentioned fits into a Decathlon 'Quechua' one litre SS Pot. This gives me four bowls/pots and two pans .. just about everything that I need to cook up whatever and in a compact and still relatively lightweight bundle. A nice share .. thanks. Definitely like the plastic tie for the handle and the silicone sheet cut to fit the lid to protect the nonstick an under the cooker for heat on some stuff. Definitely will be doing that.

Cool, I've also used the zip-tie closure for the grip while for protecting the frying pan surface I use a 1mm-thick disc cut out of an Ikea FINFÖRDELA chopping board. Great tip on the carbon felt - thanks to that I've finally tracked down the stuff at a local Bauhaus.

I bought that thing recently for a Hike in the German Alps. Its rather susceptible to winds, but i just sit infront of it with my back to the wind. But i guess ill invest in a windshield someday or try and make my own. I used it to Cook Coffee and cook noodles, no problem at all. Im looking forward to testing it in Below zero weather The friend that i hiked with thought the Trangia was kinda silly, Alcohol stoves arent very Popular in Germany yet, but i like it. They are super quiet, have a big spread out Flame and aresuper Simple. Plus 1 Liter of Fuel for it costs two Euros or something. Anyways, Sweden is Number one on my travel list, im planning on going there as soon as Possible. Just Camping near some lake, cooking stuff with my Trangia and drinking a few beers in the woods is my type of holiday. Im glad i found this Channel

Moin Avi and welcome to the channel. I would highly recommend a windshield for the Mini, wether you buy one or make one yourself of some layers of tin foil. It makes a big difference if it's windy, and if Sweden is on your list you can be sure that it's windy more often than not. ;-) I hope you get an amazing holiday, Cheers!

I use a hybrid of rhe trangia mini and triangle. Works pretty good. Even replaced the pot grabber with a soto mini to save a bit more weight

@@RedswedeOutdoors Definitely better than the original in the wind, so reduces the need for a wind break. It's also more stable with the wider base of the triangle. As a bonus, the pot fits perfectly, so it 'locks' on to the triangle in a similar fashion to the original base. Keep up the good work, and take care 👍

@@chrisorawe can confirm. the triangle provides better stability, wind breaking, still locks in, offers more stability to the frypan. Since you can use the triangle as a stick burner there's that option, throw the gel burner in there and bring them both for a very lightweight double burner combo. There is nothing stopping you from using the gel burner with alcohol. especially if you put some carbon felt in there.

I have the 27 and the mini. When I’m going light weight I just bring the Firebox nano which works great with the Trangia helping with the wind. Side note, during fire bans Trangia stoves are an absolute no no unless you have the propane canister insert that works on the bigger sets or in the Firebox nano. Love Trangia.

Looks like a solid setup. I too have a fondness for Trangias cook sets. I guess there are different degrees of fire bans world wide, and what kind of cook sets that can be used during them. Best to learn what's applicable where one are at the moment. Cheers!

Great vid. I got rid of the pot stand immediately and use a tiny Lixada titanium twig stove as a windshield. It is the perfect size and It fits inside the pot and pan along with the burner, handle, a cloth, some foil to protect the ground and a lighter. The problem Trangia have is that this little kit is so good for a solo camper like me that I don't actually need to buy anything else from them. I probably will though!

True, the T28 gets you a long way, but a T27 with a kettle will make you ready for anything, except a hiking buddy. Then you'll need a T25. One can always go a bit further down the rabbit hole ;) Cheers!

I have had the Trangia mini for a little over a year now. my first Trangia stove. I use it a few times it works nicely. the pan is small to fit some things in it/ but most meat you can cut to make it fit. it is made to cook for only small meals or one person. but just great for in a day pack or on a bike pack. here in Pa USA

If you're cooking for one it's big enough for most servings. Can't see that it wouldn't be enough to for me, and I have a healthy apetite. Once I've got the hang of the excessive flames and added the windshield I have very few complaints. Cheers!

Looks like a great meal outdoors😋 The Trangia are really great little stoves. I have not used mine much, but I was able to use it last weekend before the fire bans came down in British Columbia. I won't be able to use it during the fire ban and will need to switch to my canister stoves. I like the kit that came with your Trangia. It looks like it will work out well.

Lovely little lunch. Those flames spilling out the sides were a bit much though. I'm sure you have a video on it but I also love using a Mora for camp cooking and more, every time I use my Eldris/Kansbol I smile at how superb they are! I lovingly sharpen and strop them. Appreciate the cleanup segment at the end, I carry a small amount of watered down dish soap in a small bottle. Also works for my hands!

Thank you. A scotch brite and a small bottle of dish soap has taken up permanent residense in my T25 but there's not enough room in the Mini for that arrangement. You are absolutely correct, there is indeed a video on the Kansbol on the channel and I share your opinion about it. My favourite knife, hands down. Cheers!

thank you for an enjoyable video. I was surprised how little water was needed for the washing up. nice to know a 3rd full of fuel cooked that much food can I ask how long the total time was as not used to cooking that way.

I think the burner was going just shy of 20 minutes, and my measurment by eye could be slightly off. I was aiming for a third but ended up closer to half full. ;-). If you use some of your toilet paper or hand wipes to get rid of the fluids and other left overs it takes even less water. Cheers!

I love my Trangia Mini ! I use a Hobo Stove for Windshild and took the Burner inside sometimes i use a DIY Alcohol Burner because this is much faster to get hot Water for Coffee! I own and love my Trangia 28T aka Trangia Mini. They have been Discontinued for at least a year now and as such the prices have GONE UP SIGNIFICANTLY here in the USA 🇺🇸. As for the piece of kit, it is great for solo servings of Soups, Stews, Spaghetti, Beef and Mac, a Breakfast fry up and a Fish catch and cook style fry up. A Windscreen is a must have for good heat distribution. I've actually used the kit's bowl for a Windscreen from time to time and doing that works great 👍.

@@RedswedeOutdoors I have not been discontinued here, lol, TRANGIA HAS. They DISCONTINUED THE T28. There's still a great market for the STORMCOOKER line of T25 and T27 Trangia, even the Triangle Trangia BUT THE T28 MINI simply didn't catch on with the marketplace over here in the USA. MISTAKENLY the marketplace here wrongly compared it with the STORMCOOKER series and dubbed the T28 Mini as a novelty toy-like piece of kit. Sadly most Bushcrafters and Hikers stayed clear from buying it. It is a wonderful kit for it's own intended small uses as long as it is not compared to the full features of the STORMCOOKER series. I 💘 them all including my T28 and have been a Trangia series collector for many decades. Trangia products are clearly my GoTo kits of choice.

(year later) this stove is extremely vulnerable to the wind, the flame is strong, both too-near the bowl and often meanders widely to the side, you will need a combination of a windshield and be in a spot to reduce wind. I've had a Trangia Mini for 16 years, have tried many other stoves but come back to it primarily as you have more variety of cooking choices in a compact package.

Also got the Trangia mini. Perfect for short solo trips. One point: better don't use a metal fork in this non-stick pan. Won't last long and not healthy. Wood or plastic is better.

I had had one for over 30 yrs. Even have the military version. But prefer the Evernew Titanium. FYI there are only 2 burner sizes. The military and the regular. The cook set is what is the mini. The burner head to pot bottom is not the optimum distance.

The funny thing is that they call the ”burner stand” windshield. Which I don’t think it really is. I often use a Primus aluminium windscreen with my Mini and sometimes also place it on a Trangia aluminium plate. But I think it works quite well for one person. Adjusting the simmer ring is a bit difficult, though. But really small and portable, although of course not as small as the new Micro, which I also love.

I totally agree. The term windshield is grossly misleading on the Mini, and mostly on the Triangle too. On the 25 & 27 on the other hand it's a correct statement. But just like you I like them for the "small" cookings. Cheers!

@@RedswedeOutdoors Yes, and maybe the best way to control your cooking on a Mini would be to use the pot and pan on a Triangle with gas. Gives controlled simmering and maybe-somewhat better wind protection. Haven’t tried it yet, but at least the Mini and Micro pots fit perfectly on the Triangle, so should be handy. So far I must say it's worth the time to get aquianted with the quirks of the Mini, but then I'm a strong beliver in the "trial-and-error" method of learning things. I wish that the Micro pot was made to fit inside the Mini kit with all the gadgets I added to my Mini. Folding a tin foil 2-3 times makes a good enough windshield to the Mini. I wonder if the notches develop a non-stick coating failure? Everytime you lock the pan in place, these notches will experience a friction non negligeable between the pot and pan itself.

You're probably right that the notches will loose their non-stick surface eventually. On the other hand the heat where they sit isn't that pronounced so the amount of food that get stuck there will probably not be an issue, at least that's what I hope. Cheers Osman!

If you’re in the USA you can use Heet (yellow bottle) with extra ventilation or outdoors, denatured alcohol or 96% alcohol and up. Regular alcohol doesn’t burn that hot and produces lots of soot on your pans making it a pain in the $&#* to wash in my opinion.

in my opinion the mini trangia T28, isn’t the best choice when it’s risk for forest fire. At least in my t28 there’s flames all over the place and the burner sits almost directly on the ground. Most of the time I have used my T28 it has started to burn in the vegetation around it, even in the winter with snow on the ground it stated to burn in the “ljung” at the side of the stove. You really have to look for a secure place for your T28. Of course you always have to do that when using open flame but it’s much higher risk wit the T28 than with my T25 or T27 where the burner sits a dm over the ground inside the windshield 🤔😊

I agree, the flames came high for me and it wasn't even blowing that hard. I belive that a windshield will keep the flames more "local" but haven't tried it yet. Some kind of fireproof ground sheet could probably be a good thing to bring. Cheers!

@@RedswedeOutdoors Yes, I was almost a little surprised off the stove the first use. I had tried to modified it wit a windshield directly on half of the pot stand and thought it made the alcohol burn to hot. But realised it burns the same without that homemade windshield. The first time I sat at a side of a lake and the ground was really swampy, it was hard to sit down without being wet. But the grass around was dry 🤔 A ground sheath would be nice. Like a pice if a fire blanket. But it’s not the preferred stove in dry summer months 🤔😊

From your neighbour country. You pretty much destroyed that little frying pan with no oil and scraping the bottom with fork. You will still have the cooking pan for 500+ ml cooking pan for boiling water, when it is not windy otherwise you need also a good windscreen. Otherwise nice entertaining video.

Had one now for many years. The small vargo windshield fits on top of the stove and I made a cutting board which fits in the frying pan from a thin Ikea place mat. Best little setup on the market. Tried all sorts of bits and pieces to try and improve on it but never succeeded and return to the mini. If weight is an issue replace the meths burner with the Trangia gel burner tin which weighs next to nothing.

I've been looking on the gel burner aswell but for some reason gel have never been a popular fuel in Sweden so it's hard to find and therefore it's impractical for me, wich is a shame. A burner that weighs 18 grams would have been nice. Cheers!
