Respecting names is important, a couple cis people in my family go by their middle names, and they have to tell companies and banks that they are referred to by their middle name. Would've been the same in school and no one has ever had a problem with it, but throw in being trans and a name change is a big deal
@MissMeganBeckett6 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Morgan my grandma also goes by her middle name 🙂 I am sort of glad I call her grandma though cause I am horrible at remembering names, I have gotten really good at talking to people without using names. Most times people don’t even notice unless we are talking about someone who isn’t there and I have no idea who they’re talking about without context, unfortunately they usually think it means I don’t care 🙁

This is so important. I've had friends who I was completely male-passing with who I came out to as trans. I was naive and fell into the 'what was your old name' trap (several times. I have too much faith in people) and immediately they would start calling me my birth name and female pronouns. Those were such awful experiences...
@notdog19967 жыл бұрын
It happened to me once in my life. (I didn't exactly tell him my birth name, but I let him figure it out) He was the most transphobic piece of shit I ever met, so I completely cut him out of my life. Honestly, I much prefer my birth name to be forgotten and never spoken of again.

I went by my neutral nickname for ages. Everyone called me that - everyone. I even was tempted to sign official letters with it. Then a group of friends made us all each other tell our birth names. And they kept using mine. Eventually everyone around me switched to use that name. It took me a lot of courage and three years to say "stop" and revert to my nickname. To those who were insisting on using a name that was written on some official papers I offered my second birth name which is at least a little more neutral and can more easily be changed. I felt like awaking from a nightmare, one that clings to you after you wake up... my first birth name is now my deadname and I consider it disrespectful to use it, no matter how patient I am otherwise.

My parents wanted to give me a boy's name, but German law wouldn't allow it for an afab baby, so it could only be used as a middle name. I came out as trans in my mid 20s and then used a completely new name to go by, but more recently I thought getting called by my old middle name would be easier than having to go to court just to change the name on my passport. It's Sol which means sun or peace and I've become a much more positive person over the last couple of months, so I feel like it's a sign and validates my identity too, even if my parents obviously had no clue that I could be trans :)
@CarbonUnitX7 жыл бұрын
That is so cool! :) I have a similar experience with a "sign." I had a hard time choosing because my first choice doesn't work in my native language. It would be pronounced wrong and lose its meaning. So I went instead with my "work in progress" name that my parents called me while in the womb. It was kinda prophetic, because it's a male name and I'm a guy AFAB. So they got it right the first time!

@MikaruXDenka7 жыл бұрын
Well, there are a few more well known Aidens in any kind of writing. But I like that name a lot, so I don't care that it's a more common name. I like the meaning behind it, the origin... I am just a bit mad about myself that I choose this way of writing it, there is one that I like more, but ehhh, I already legally changed it so I have to life with it.

I feel like I lost my closest friend when I saw her referring to me as a combination of my birth name and my name on a Facebook picture of her kids with a present I sent to them, so I can only assume both her and her kids, her husband, and my other friends are all calling me that (I'm not on Facebook and moved away from my home town). She was the only one, apart from my partner+his parents, who (I thought) respected my name change and consciously made the effort in person to call me my name. I can no longer face communicating with them or any of my oldest friends. It hurts a lot.
@tourettehero7 жыл бұрын
Ash hey ash, don't give up too quick on people. Maybe she fears telling the kids or honestly doesn't know the depths it bothers you. Always remember, she probably knew you by your birth name a lot longer than your chosen name and she didn't have the same time you have to become accustom to all the changes. I obviously don't know your situation and all this can not apply at all... I'm simply speaking from the other side. I'm the non trans family member who had to learn. My brother turned to "j" for awhile as I transitioned in my own head to his new name, which also happened to begin with "j," lucky me.
@fraxinus_ash7 жыл бұрын
tourette hero thanks. The thing is she is usually very kind and sensitive about such subjects and has no trouble explaining things to the kids in a way they would understand. It isn't borne out of malice, it's more like because I'm technically out of earshot (I saw this via my partner's facebook) that she doesn't bother. To me it's like misgendering someone when they aren't there.
@badreanna7 жыл бұрын
Ash god I'm always terrified people are doing this. Especially my parents. They recently moved so im hoping the new social setting will be enough for them to change their language about me. But... My hopes arent too high.
@tourettehero7 жыл бұрын
Ash i think there is a psychological side to this you are missing. Even with that being a very real possibility, youre being negatively impacted and thats what matters here. She probably doesnt understand your desire to be seen as male in very sense to all people or possibly feels she shouldnt refer to you as he or by your chosen name without expressed permission, if there hasnt been. Maybe have a talk and let her know your expectations of the friendship. Explain your feelings and why these things are important. For along while i wasnt sure how to refer to my bro (ftm) in public. I felt very stuck so to say... So finally i just asked. Maybe shes too afraid to ask. Again, all assumptions here as ibdont know the relationship, but hopefully this friendship can be saved its just some confusion.

That's not cool. Tell her you wouldn't disrespect her by referring to her as her old maiden name (assuming she took husband's last name) or call her a mean nickname she had in grade school. Tell her to respect you or she's not your friend. Maybe she'll get a clue and apologize

Referring to a trans person by their name and their pronouns is super important... Thank you so much for making these videos and just being you, Chase. Ever since I finally came out at work and began the social aspect of my transition, it has felt so good to just hear my coworkers and my friends call me by my name. I find that even when they mess up on my pronouns, it doesn't sting as bad as long as they use my name. Pronouns are super super important, of course, but I understand why it's easier to slip up on them than it is a name. That said, not all my coworkers have been accepting of my transition and it's been hard to deal with that. One person absolutely refuses to refer to me by my name or my pronouns. She does so by simply only ever talking to me when she cannot avoid it. And she uses my last name on my tips envelope when she used to use my dead name pre-transition (and writes everyone else's first names). On one hand, this is better than her blatantly misgendering me and calling me by my dead name all the time, but on the other... this behavior is drastically different than previous and it hurts. It's like I'm no longer worth acknowledging. Her and her sister were super orthodox religious and I imagine this is why, but even her sister at least attempted to use my name (or rather the nickname everyone gave me, D) even if she still misgendered me. I felt better about this than I do about her sister ignoring my existence... Overall, though, work has been accepting. New people are hard to deal with sometimes, mostly because I don't currently pass, but I feel more or less comfortable as myself at work and that's all I can really ask for, I think.

I came out just over a year ago. I changed my name completely from my birth name and, while i understand that it takes time to get used to, no one in my family has tried to use the right name or pronouns, except my dad. And the thing is I'm terrified to correct them. My family is very "we support you but we're not going to acknowledge it or the fact that you ever came out" and i really don't know what to do. I'm terrified and it hurts every time i hear my birth name or she or girl. But this made me feel valid. I feel like i am enough and trans enough even without the respect from my family, so thank you 😊❤️

Also just something to add, trans people can also slip up and use their birthname too. If they’ve only just come out, they’re still not used to using their new name, no matter how much it means to them, they can slip up. Be patient as they’ll be patient with you. Don’t tell them you have a right to use their birth and because “If you can’t get your name right then why should I?” It’s the same with pronouns too. Everyone is adapting to it, so be patient. Be nice to people. :)

What you say about how it can be problematic for trans people to look for validation is true. But I like to flip that thought process to how cis people get that exact same validation from everyone & we don't critique that. Someone who prefers a nickname gets to use that name, they still get their pronouns validated, etc. Trans people deserve the same types of validation.

But whenever I talk to someone on the phone or online, everyone looks at my name and instantly thinks two things 1. That I'm a guy 2. That I'm American (I'm actually an Aussie with a American dad P.s he was not the one who named me) I'm always correcting people who say that "Dallas is a boys name" I mean yes it's more common in men but actually it can be considered A unisex name. I actually don't care about the pronouns that are used with me because I'm so used to being called a guy.

Wouldn't have been here without them in more ways than just the very literal sense. Also, I can call myself AJ now and have a friend who goes by KJ. Not the reason I went with these three names but it is a nice bonus. :P Recently got my diagnosis and soon will be getting the letter that'll allow me to legally change my name, as well as my referral to an endocrinologist and a gynaecologist. I won't actually change my name until I've been on T for a little while and have come to the conclusion that this really is the right path for me to take, I think, but it's nice to actually have stuff ready beforehand.

My name I chose is something that makes me happy to hear someone call me. It's very different from my birth name because I never liked my birth name, and I never felt a connection with it. So, yeah. Hi, I'm Parker. I just *love* saying that. :)

i regret choosing the name i go by so much, its such a generic Trans Name™ (alex) and like i dont identify with it at all, but everyone calls me alex now and i cant really change. i just wanted anything other than my old name, and 2 years later im just trying to bear it. i like one name but i prefer the pronunciation and spelling in a different language (isaac --> isak) than the one that is spoken where i'm from (also shares the name of a fictional character that my whole friend group knows) so i can't until i ~reinvent~ myself in university because nobody will know me lmao.

Phandom! At The Disco I went through a similar experience. Most people in my life used to refer to me as Ari for two years but towards the end of it I started hating it because people were calling me my actual name but were still referring to me in a feminine way. I decided to, funnily enough, change to the name alex. I feel so much more like myself now that I've changed it and honestly it only took people one month maximum to change to it. Don't be afraid to experiment with names after you've originally come out.

This is probably gonna sound bleh, but a lot of us go through an "Alex phase" while we're trying to figure ourselves out. Alex is the most common neutral name there is (in English anyway). I went by Alex for a year or so before settling on Eli, my boyfriend went by Alex for a while before settling on Ethan... You're allowed to change your name and find one you feel fits. I personally went by Alex, Demetri, and Alan before Eli, and Ethan went through a few himself. I know people who've gone through six or seven names before they found one they identified with. Not saying Alex or any of its forms is a bad name, but it is one that a lot of us use when figuring ourselves out.

Can I ask, why is there the emphasis on being a trans man/woman.. in terms of the word trans. Because if you were born in a female body, but you were always male, why when you transitioned, would you not just say you are male, because, that's who you are? Are there any trans people who would just say they are male/female without the trans infront of it? My god that was badly worded..
@notdog19967 жыл бұрын
Most people don't use the trans prefix in day to day life. It's mostly used in trans-specific contexts. For example, I won't introduce myself as a trans man, but if I'm talking about puberty, specifying that I am trans is kinda important because my experience was different than that of a cis man.
@lanetaylor39377 жыл бұрын
Spooky Kabuki most of the time, a trans person would simply use male or female, etc, but using the trans prefix can be helpful for people who like to use it, to make a destinction or to talk about their experience. That's what I think at least. I'm a trans guy, but I wouldn't usually introduce or talk about myself as such, unless it was relevant

I second the above and would add that it depends on the person too. Some feel that being trans is more a part of their identity while others look at it as merely a medical thing they deal with and that's that. An activist would be more likely to bring up being trans while someone who is stealth obviously never would. As mentioned above for someone who hasn't had the cis experience of their own gender growing up there is a distinction. It doesn't make them any less a man/woman, but it's there. As someone who is transitioning later in life and isn't exactly "traditionally" masculine I feel what I missed out on and what I had instead has very much shaped me as a person for better and for worse so the trans prefix feels fitting, personally. I might feel differently if I'd transitioned in my teens, who knows. But I don't plan on introducing myself as a trans guy to everyone I meet if and when I start passing, that's for sure.

Another question! Hooray... If someone is struggling with someone else's "new name," would it be wrong to have a discussion with the person about a compromise? For example, my friend choose the name Reese, his birth name was sheri. His family didn't like to call him Reese, but would call him Ree. They didn't call him Ree short for Reese, but it was still a compromise where they never used his birth name and only Ree. So if someone's name is say Rebecca and they want to be called David, but the family/friends are having a real struggle, is it ok to say, "hey, I'm struggling with calling you David, can I call you beck as I work on calling you David?" Or is that completely wrong?
@maxwellchappell90197 жыл бұрын
It really depends on if the person is okay with it. My parents called me MJ for awhile until they were used to my transition. It was fine with me, but if it makes the person uncomfortable it might not be great to do.

I every so often have people ask what my old name was lol. But truth is, is that I lucked out. My parents decided to name me Logan, so when I transitioned to male the only names I felt to change were middle names.

I'm avoiding telling anyone in my family the name I want to use because I feel like they won't respect it and the name is special to me. I really don't want to associate bad experiences with the name, but I also don't like them using my birth name. I don't know what to do. Does anyone have a similar experience or have any tips for dealing with this?

The only good way that you can mispronoun or misgender or say the wrong name of a trans friend is if they haven’t come out yet as trans ( or some kind of non-binary ) except to a couple of their close friends, a partner, or maybe even just you.
