Trans America Trail North Carolina Section

We finished the North Carolina Section - Trans American Trail in 2 days 25 hrs of driving and 527.8 miles of trail.
Trail Starts in Damascus VA and goes through Appalachia to Tellico Plains TN just over the NC boarder.

I think FS 63 has been closed a long time. I went through it in July and it was closed then. I still went because I didn’t want to take the detour, and it was washed out, but the Jeep would have made it easy (at the time I went through)

This is AWESOME! I just learned about the TAT. I bought my first motorcycle about 3 months ago and live in NC not too far from the Parkway. I have a few questions if it's okay. (1) Would a regular gps have signal for the entire ride? Is there a particular one you would recommend? The one I have is just an old garmin. (2) How remote are those fire roads. Would you feel comfortable riding this alone or would it be best to partner up on it? Thanks

I rode most of the TAT a few years ago on a DR 650. Stopped at Utah. Most regular GPS would have signal the entire way. Which Garman do you have? Learning to input tracks on your gps is an art in itself. The fire roads are pretty remote, a partner is good if you can find one. We started out with five, but broke down in groups of 2 and 3. Less is more, I didn't listen to this advise, and took all kinds of crap I didn't need. The passes in CO are a Bit@h on a heavily loaded bike. I want to ride it again, but I will take a lighter bike with a lot less gear. Fuel Injection is your friend.

I'm enjoying your TAT videos (just watched your new Arkansas section) and getting pumped about doing this. I live in TN, but this section is probably where I'll start, maybe at Linville Falls and work my way back to TN). I just got the NC and TN maps from the TAT website. I'm in a 3rd Gen 4Runner, so I should be fine if/when 4WD is necessary. Are there any sections where a 2WD would struggle (wondering in case some of my friends join that don't have 4WD)? I've heard the Hurricane Creek section can be challenging (but I see on the TAT map there is also another way around that). Thanks!

You 100% need four-wheel-drive for hurricane Creek but there is a bypass. But I would at least put all of your buddies in your 4runner and take them down it. It’s awesome!

Great video. Assuming you guys aren't Subaru haters and might have some knowledge of their capabilities, do you think a stock Outback (older, non-CVT) with good AT tires could manage this trip?

Paul Speakman 100% yes. There was only 1 spot that had a bit of washout that I assumed would be fixed by now. But the Nantahala area had a water crossing that during the middle of the summer at a dry period would be doable.

It’s called a roll chart. Moto users love them because they can hit the odometer reset at each point to know how far to the next turn.

In the NC section it’s quite of bit of the drive time but not the total mileage. In other words. The most time spent on the trail is on one lane but it’s not a ton of the mileage lol. So 10 hrs out of the 24 it took
