Thinning out the Vocal Folds
One of the best kept secrets to lightening the voice is thinning out the vocal folds.
When we speak, our vocal folds vibrate.
Going through a testosterone based puberty causes the vocal folds to thicken and increase in weight.
So when you voice, the sound comes out THICKER with more BASS.
To combat that, we want to thin out the vocal folds.
Thinning out the vocal folds takes at least a few weeks of practice with a set of specific exercises.
BUT if you’re curious how your voice would sound with thinner folds, I have a few magic tricks to get you there temporarily.
Here’s an easy one:
1. Hold out the EEE sound with your head aligned right over your shoulders.
2. Holding out that EEE sound, slowly crane your head forward only moving the head and neck not the shoulders or the torso, thinning out the sound.
3. Tune into that thinner sound and try to maintain it as you slowly bring your head back to neutral.
I’ll be sharing some similar magic tricks for thinner and thicker folds soon.
