When raising the larynx to brighten the voice, or lowering it to darken the voice, you can start to feel strain and tension as you practice.
Tension in the larynx will restrict the movement.
You may have tried resting and trying again the next day or just pushing through it but that often leads to bad habits and more tension.
What you should be doing is manually stretching and massaging the muscles that move the larynx so that it feels free and easy.
Here’s how:
Step 1: Locate your larynx by finding that bump in your throat. Place your fingers on either side and gently wiggle it left and right. Do this for 30 seconds.
Step 2: Move your fingers above the larynx to right under your chin, and apply gentle pressure, dragging the fingers down the neck, coming together at the bottom. Do this for 30 seconds.
Step 3: With your head angled down, layer your hands one over the other, letting your fingers rest right on top of the collar bones. Apply gentle pressure pinning those muscles down. Take your head straight back, letting your jaw open up. Then slowly + gently bring your mouth closed, holding for 1, 2, 3, seconds, and release. Do this 10 times.
Do these 3 steps every time you’re starting to feel fatigue in the voice, the throat, or the larynx so you can make sure you’re taking care of your vocal health and creating a voice that not only sounds good, but lasts forever.
So that’s how to relieve tension around the larynx.
