While Transcendence is extremely mod-friendly, it suffers from a rather small modding scene, which seems to have only shrunk over time

Endless Sky is one of the few games I know of which is even more mod friendly, and it has a similar (though less extreme) lack of modding scene. Starsector's also not bad, on a comparable level to Transcendence, but has the issue of updates not being consistent about mod compatibility, which leads to the game being less mod-friendly *BUT* it's managed to keep a moderately-capable community around modding anyway.

After all these years, this game finally gets some decent coverage...The developer of Transcendence also wrote Anacreon in the 1980's, released as shareware. Anacreon uses a text-based map (similar to dwarf fortress) with turn-based strategy gameplay. Not quite a 4x because it didn't have much planet development. Main activity is to explore, set planetary production, build fleets and conquer more planets. I see that Kronosaur is also working on bringing Anacreon into the 21st century.

Nookrium, I bet I speak for alot of people when I say that your endorsements and playthroughs have caused me to wishlist or buy more games than any other creator by a wide margin. I don't suppose you could be coerced to do a throwback presentation of Sword of the Stars? I'd love to see a creator like you give a game like that a second wind.

Wow this looks almsot exactly like a game I made at university 10 years ago, mine just on a much smaller scale. My tutor told me I should keep going on it and release it on steam but I never did. Kinda wish I had now...

Last time you covered this game, I was intrigued and downloaded it and played it. I completed the main story and more, poured like 50 hours into it. It's excellent! 2d Freelancer, basically. Highly recommend everyone to give it a shot :)

Thanks v much for taking a longer look at Transcendence! Your previous stumbling around within only the starter system didn't do the game much credit :( The game's mechanics are heavily influenced by Nethack: barrels ~= potions; chips ~=scrolls etc. Playing for a couple of hours doesn't really explore the depth (eg the importance of the economy; how some items are worth more/less depending upon who you trade with etc), let alone the story-arc, unfortunately :( FWIW Centauri rice is one of the most expensive foodstuffs in the early game: sell it to a hotel to gain best price. Mines won't buy ore (or refined metal) but will take fuel. Fuel stations are cheapest for that item, & will pay good money for water ice.. etc etc

They're quite different in a lot of ways. Endless Sky has less involved graphics, with a single sprite design used per ship, and rotated without any shadow or reflection effects applied, but the ship designs and art quality make this not feel as bad as it might with worse art direction. The galaxy map also operates differently, being a fixed pre-made map rather than the randomly generated ones you get in every playthrough of Transcendence. This also ties into it have a more structured story in Endless Sky, though. Ship customisation in Endless Sky is extremely flexible with few strict restrictions on how you can equip any given ship (the most notable limits being fixed numbers of gun and turret mounts), and a very granular and variable point-based system where Transcendence has designated slots for ships to equip specific items into. Endless Sky's fleet management is more friendly to bringing big swarms of ships into battle while Transcendence is generally a smaller scale experience. The weapon types in Transcendence have a lot more complexity to them, while Endless Sky is more straightforward and easy to parse at a glance. None of the differences make either game "better" or "worse" than the other, just different, and likely to appeal to people with different preferences. I like playing both for different reasons while I'm in the mood for different experiences. which one you should start with is dependent on your preferences (or current mood if you're like me and vary in what kind of game you're interested in).
