Starsector still captures me more than any new game I have purchased in half a decade. I have starfield and baldurs gate waiting to be played but a fully modded Starsector is infinitely more immersive and fun to play and I would argue in terms of cost vs entertainment Starsector is the greatest Game ever made as I have sunk in almost a thousand hours and all the developer ever asked for was 20$, no lootboxes, no season pass no paid DLC not even a hint of microtransactions and that's why I endorse this game above all others wherever I go!

@@dominusbalial835 When you do I've got one advice, buy the cheap dlc. It has a very important quality of life improvement. An item that let's you change your appearance later if you decide your character looks butt ugly.

Useful thing about ctrl+click in inventory management, which you didn't explain fully: It doesn't *just* pick up the entire stack of whatever you're clicking on. If you're under your max cargo space, it will take as much of that stack as you can fit into your cargo. Similarly, ctrl+click on a stack already in your cargo will only remove enough of that stack to stop you from being overloaded, if you've got more cargo than you can fit. Also most of the "industry" skill tree is about running your fleet more efficiently, collecting more resources when looting, using up less supplies and fuel during travel, and things like that. There's 1 skill which is actually relevant to managing your colonies, but it is a pretty important thing to be aware of when you're setting up colonies, so definitely worth noting as a part of the tree. And for the flight control setting, that option you mentioned which isn't on the default is one most players recommend changing early on. The default mode is better when you're flying a bigger ship with less of a focus on forward-facing guns, but the inverted mode is better on most of the small ships like your Wolf.

Don't purchase fuel until you re-open the portal. You won't use it anyway. After portal open priceses will drop to normal level.

I've been playing Starsector off and on since version 0.91. I'm not above watching a 'Beginner's Guide' though. Combat is both the most exciting and the most frustrating element of the game. It's balanced quite well in the early to mid-game, but in the late mid-game and end-game you get curb stomped by these thirty ship, 10 officers at max skill level, fleets. If you don't have 8 officers with high skill levels and 30 ships on hand, you're not gonna have a fun time.

this dude would have made a hundred million dollars if he released on steam but he refuses to give steam 10% of his money haha. Great game but amazing mod scene. All the really interesting factions are mod factions. I have probably 500+ hours in this game. The ships and battles get MASSIVE later in the game. 50+ ship battles, ships can have 25+ weapons each. Absolutely crazy.

Steam takes 30% not just 10% (even Epic's cut is 12% and that's the lowest of the big stores). Also, given the fact that Steam has been a known health hazard for 4 years now and Valve's response to requests to fix it has included repeated violations of privacy rights of users asking them to fix it as well as a couple of attempts to literally coerce affected customers into self-harm, I'm going to say I hope the game shows up anywhere *BUT* Steam in future. Help encourage people to look beyond the company who's still holding onto a pseudo-monopoly in the PC gaming market while actively trying to be the most abusive company in that market.

I dislike Steam more every year but I have never heard/read anything about it being a health hazard or Valve coercion related to that. Again, I really don't like Valve/Steam but even for me this sounds pretty far fetched. Any articles you can link on this?

@@Ash_18037 I've sent medical records showing the problem to Valve, and I'm not alone in doing so. There's discussion about the issues, with evidence of multiple people having contacted Valve not only with evidence that the Steam client is causing problems, but in some cases with breakdowns of where the problem is caused and how to fix it (modders and skin creators for Steam have had access to some of the client code for some time and found where some of the issues are being caused and even provided examples of ways to fix it in some instances). I haven't seen any articles written on the subject (not that you can post links on KZbin properly any more even if I did have one) but if you Google "steam client migraine epilepsy" you'll find plenty of discussions, including several posts on Steam forums, where at least one of the global mods has tried to give the situation a chance at visibility by creating, and for a while pinning, a megathread about the issue... in the client beta forum while it's an issue with the app's live build, but it was visible for quite a while before being unpinned, and has been occasionally bumped again since. I've personally provided sources for the basic information about the issue to a couple of journalists, and offered to provide medical records if they ask for them, and done the same for a couple of KZbinrs who discuss gaming news. Nobody's taken me up on the offer yet, though.

The in-game tutorial has gotten a lot better over the years, but it's definitely what a lot of people consider a "wiki game" where you learn a lot of important game mechanics from researching the game and talking to the community than the tutorial gives you.

I bought this a while ago. It looked really good but I found the combat too fast for my old brain and fingers. I found a mod to drop toggle the combat speed, so I'm giving it another go. Thanks for covering this game, your tips are invaluable.

Starsector is a beautiful game in the beginning and become more and more boring trough middle and endgame. The beginning, when you are small and enemies are relatively small, is just amazing. The middle game although there is a sharp turn from combat to the fleet (and later a planet) logistics, and there is not a lot of instruments for that. No "save fleet", no second, reserve fleets etc.

Agreed! The Nexerelin mod adds some of that stuff if you're interested. Some of its features are a little clunky, but for example it does allow you to create Special Task Groups and transfer your own ships and officers to them, and then give them orders to patrol systems, orbit planets, follow you around, join attacks, etc. That's definitely one of the Nexerelin features that should be in vanilla IMO, along with optional randomized core worlds, variable tariffs, etc. But some of the other features are either overpowered (special agents) or undercooked (ground invasions), or they just change the game in a way that you might not appreciate.

The in game tutorial is still just awful, so good to see how a more experienced players does it, but please for a tutorial you need to slow down! The "find the derelict ships then clear the pirates from the gate" mission at around 39:00 has been complained about by new players for about 5 years and it is STILL utterly useless and infuriating to new players. This video is sort of helpful but you really go way too fast when making use of the key missing information. I'm referring to stuff such as moth-balling your ships to avoid using all of your supplies, salvaging only the lower quality ships, being aware of the Storage button back at the base where you are given big cache of free supplies/weapons. It really amazes me how useless game devs are at creating helpful tutorials (not you of course). The games tutorial is so bad the general advice actually seems to be "don't do the tutorial at all", just start a new game and play cautiously at the beginning.

I did the tutorial for free xp and items I can sell once done. One of the best things I learned is just take it slow and take multiple derelict scan missions as a fast scout ship with enough supplies and fuel to ride the hyperspace. It will help in finding good system to build tall in between the missions. Build rep with Pirates and Pathers to keep most from attacking your defense and trade fleets so you can focus on dealing with the most brazen rival pirates trying to establish an influence. Hostile Activity becomes manageable once a colony is very stable and has the means to assert their sphere of influence.
