I saw the word insane in the title and thought it might be exaggerated, but nope! That really was insane! The fastest freight trains I've seen in person were traveling at about 60 mph, and these look way faster. It's definitely interesting thinking about that crazy amount of mass and weight traveling at such great speeds! Especially around a curve like that!

I worked in a factory next to the old Conrail line in Endicott, NY. My packing station was next to a loading dock, one day we heard a terrible noise with tires screeching and car horns blowing. Seems one of the box cars lost a wheel, as in it flew off, thru a fence and over a 4 lane local road, ending up next to the buildings on the other side. It was a miracle it didn't hit a car crossing the road, if it had they'd have been killed for sure. I can't imagine seeing that fly across the road in front of me!

So am I the only one who has noticed that intermodal trains seem to go at higher speeds than a standard freight train? If I were to venture a guess, it would be that intermodal freight is lighter and therefore doesn't require the locomotives to work as hard to tow it, so the locomotives can pull them with higher speeds. Can anyone verify this observation for me?
@tbb236
@tbb236 5 жыл бұрын
Jacob Harwood they’re higher priority trains. It’s not that they’re any lighter or heavier, it’s just that the crew is authorized to go a bit faster to get the shipment there early or on time, because having these types of trains be late can be serious trouble for crews.

Simply said more engines pulling the rail cars.
@kensingtonchapp4819
@kensingtonchapp4819 2 жыл бұрын
@@tbb236 That isn't quite true. Maximum speed is determined by "tons per operative brake," train length and power configuration, the type of cars, and the type of roller bearings used on the axles. Contrary to popular belief, the priority level of the freight, and overall tonnage have nothing to do with the legal maximum speed. You typically see manifest freight trains being limited to 55mph because they have a very high tonnage per brake, and they usually have empty cars which are susceptible to "truck hunting" at high speeds. But, at my railroad we do run certain manifest cars at 70. Hope this helps.
