How to do a transfer case fluid change on a jeep transfer case. Mine is an NP242 but most jeep XJ and wrangler transfer cases are very similar. Check out my Facebook page! / 1730912723801407

A close friend of mine told me that he used the recommended automatic transmission fluid but it was actually chemically aggressive toward brass parts. He found that a synthetic fluid was better. Thank you for the video and your efforts to put it out there for us all. I'm very grateful. Greetings from Arizona.

So I shouldn’t use something like merc/Dex III to fill in my T-case in my 01 xj? What else would you recommend?

Great video! I’m planning on buying an XJ this week ($600 from a coworker, can probably have it in great condition for $1000 including tires or less but it runs as-is). I was watching this for entertainment and to make sure there’s nothing I should know ahead of time - your recommendation to crack the fill hole first was awesome.

If you don't want to buy a pump and have a container of gear lube you can swap the lid onto the ATF and squeeze it into the case.

Thanks for the info!! I have a 92 which I need to change my trans, trans case and diff fluids!! Great showing the diff between the nasty fluid and the new fluid.
@wildbill23c5 жыл бұрын
This also needs to be done anytime you drive the vehicle through deep water, and you'll need to change the differential fluids as well if that's the case, water intrusion will quickly damage your drive train components if you leave it in there.

Sweet great video found it looking for some answers for my 2003 WJ my darn 242 wont come out of being engaged stays in 4wd full time which is fine its a selec trac but still aggravating, ( still looking for a soulution to the problem, may try this maybe this is whats binding it up ) Thanks!
@AdmiralOffRoad8 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video! If you are having trouble shifting out of 4 wheel drive, you might need to adjust your shift linkage.
@codywright548 жыл бұрын
its a 2003 it doesnt have a adjustable linkage, i think it might be fluid low, or something going on with the Fork in the Tcase
@wildbill23c5 жыл бұрын
Put it back into 4wd full time, drive forward several feet, let off the accelerator and shift back to 2WD, re-apply the throttle, it should disengage....also if your front and rear tires aren't the same size, same wear amount, different treads, trying to engage/disengage while turning, or while under load all will cause problems in disengaging and engaging the 4WD in either full or part time mode in many cases. It does have an adjustable linkage. www.cherokeeforum.com/how-tos/a/jeep-grand-cherokee-1999-2004-why-am-i-stuck-in-4wd-397794

Not sure what the book says I do mine every 35,000 miles when I change the transmission fluid/filter...might as well do it at the same time since you are already right there. The manual on my 98 Grand Cherokee says 30,000 miles, but I think 35k would be fine on the transfer case as well since the book shows transmission fluid change at 35-36k depending on your oil change interval, and of course nobody ever really goes exactly 3k or 5k or whatever interval they decide to use, some go earlier or later just due to convenience or forgetting (nope I've never done that HAHA!!). Its not a lifetime fluid no matter what the manufacturers try to claim so starting the routine service as early as possible is definitely the way to go.

Hi D, I have a 99 xj and I want to put a winch bumper on it but I want to keep my original fender flares on the Jeep. What bumper would you recommend? Thanks, Rick
@AdmiralOffRoad7 жыл бұрын
most winch bumpers will allow you to keep your flairs. I've only had experience with my JCR DIY winch bumper, but I really like it. when looking at winch bumpers, I would look at the tie in brackets especially since that is what attaches the bumper to the vehicle and if you do use it for winching, there will be a lot of stress put on them.

And also the manual says to put ATF+4 ?

So I watched this, and found it strange that it uses atf, double checked resources to confirm, checked out. Still seemed strange so I called jeep, spoke to them, and found out that its actually a misprint, and while atf works they recomend 10w30 full synthetic. Which is quite a bit cheaper.
@LordLancifer7 жыл бұрын
If you only fill it until it leaks from the fill hole, why did a bunch pour out when you removed the fill plug? Did the previous owner do it with the rear end jacked up?

i use redline mt90 on my manual xj can i use the same for my transfer case? thanks!!
@AdmiralOffRoad8 жыл бұрын
+albertort1 The manufacturer calls for ATF. Its cheap enough that I would just go out and get some rather than risk using the wrong fluids. With that said, I have also heard that the 231 isn't too picky when it comes to fluids, so in a pinch you could probably get away with that.

torque specs? and where is the most common place for a transfer case to leak thanks
@wildbill23c5 жыл бұрын
input and output seals, and the seal between the front and rear half of the case. Occasionally you'll get a leak in the drain or fill plugs as well which is usually remedied with some sealant. I'm not sure on torque specs, people get way too wound up over them, tighten the plugs down firmly, you don't need to put a huge torque on them and risk stripping the threads in the case.

Anyone know the symptoms of a bad transfer case?
@wildbill23c5 жыл бұрын
banging noises from the transfer case, grinding and whining when under load, popping out of the range you have selected, seems most common to happen in low range, no output to the front drive shaft when 4WD is engaged. Several possible symptoms.

I'm surprised you use good engine oil on it but use cheapo El Autozone oil for the transfer?
@AdmiralOffRoad8 жыл бұрын
Transfer cases really aren't picky
@skirmich8 жыл бұрын
Admiral Off-Road Well its more about longevity than being picky. You could say the same about engine oil, Its all about changing it when its due but you still used good oil on it.
@AdmiralOffRoad8 жыл бұрын
+skirmich I agree. The Mobil 1 that I used was on sale and I usually go for whatever synthetic oil is on sale. As for the autozone ATF, they do not make their own oil or transmission fluid. Their fluids are made by one of the other major manufacturers and autozone just puts their labels on it. I don't use synthetic ATF in my transmission so I went with an inexpensive conventional Dex/Merc iii transmission fluid for the transfer case. I change the t-case fluid regularly enough that breakdown is not a huge issue. Im not necessarily recommending that anyone use cheap or expensive fluids in any particular application, but hopefully this cleared up why I made that decision in this case.
