Cheers for such a great video! Really helped me out. I found a little trick to releasing the cover when rtv has been used. If you remove all the bolts, you can then put the wrench in the filler hole and turn. It'll just turn the cover right off. So no need for chiseling :)

if you have to use a chisel to remove the cover, try using it on the top. That way if you do damage the surface it wont leak as much (hopefully).
@nickconrad945 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeep solid- one idea to get the cover off is to use a bottle jack and a block of wood to push up on the cover to sort of sheer the RTV off. if it won't come off with just the jack, once quite a bit of weight is on it go ahead and give it a few swift blows with a mallet & off it will come. This is a fast superior way in my opinion as it almost completely eliminates the possibility of damaging your housing. Love the YJ!
@JeepSolid5 жыл бұрын
Huh... That's a great idea, never tried that, but will in the future when faced with the same issue.

Love your videos . Dale ! - but a chisel ? Try a painter’s 5-in 1 tool - it’s wide , it’s beveled , and if it’s a quality one piece with the blade extending thru the handle , a hammer can be used to send it home - works like a charm & it won’t mar the surfaces - just sayin’

Dale , I use a putty knife (good grade) just tap it in easy and it does the job and nothing damaged. Regards William

Aways use a putty knife I never use a chisel. Love that coffee cup motor oil very nice cup. Super nice looking gasket when I do my XJ diffs I’ll make sure to buy those gaskets. Great job. I’m going to buy lub-locker gaskets so I have them here and I’ll get the diff fluid too. Thanks for the heads up on gaskets and fluid.
@rockyeasterline3484 жыл бұрын
Also if I'm using a chisel or screwdriver on that differential I would do it up high so it will not leak later if it did leak
@glenhenning926110 ай бұрын
Excellent! And I will be using those gaskets on my cj5 for sure.

Good vid, I like to see others methods and techniques. Only thing I might say/recommend would be,if. Unfortunately the rubber mallet doesn't work. And the chisel or slotted screwdriver is the last resort. To try to break the seal from the top. Or if the center bolt is loose and still in, try to break the cover seal off from the higher side (above the fluid level.) In case one were or might scratch or dent the surface area. It would reduce chances of leaking. Especially if you reused the old cover.

I have a 93 YJ with a 4.0 5 speed I used to be a mechanic but only use ratchets to break something loose nowadays I always use my hammer drill battery-powered for everything 10 times faster Ex Gasser drag racer ex-pro boxer founder of boxing vs UFC and best fight predictor of all times Rocky Esterline just changed my oil today April 17th 2020 but will do my transmission and transfer case and both differentials real soon just checked them today they are full and nice and clean LOL

Your demonstration for removing the diff cover is self proof that agood quality RTV is much much better n solid then paper gaskets against mud, water n vibrations

Nice work! I recently did this to my TJ, but decided to implement a small bottle jack to loosen the cover. It worked pretty well.

Sounds like that obvious approach you've done before but don't think of it at the time. I've used bottle Jack's for all sorts of weird fixes and saves. Don't think it would've crossed my mind. Nice.

@stumpfarming6 жыл бұрын
It looks like you actually had your chisel backwards if you want to prevent damage to the case. A wood chisel like that is designed to run with the "short" side of the bit oriented away from the surface you want to lift. Anything more than a few taps to break it loose and you would likely see the chisel start to gouge the case surface.

@JeepSolid5 жыл бұрын
Is it in 4 wheel drive? This one spins, because the 4x4 activation locks the axle at the CAD housing on the axle. When not activated, the axle spins freely.

Isn't it a bad Idea to spray the inside of your diff with brake cleaner. Won't it leave some kind of chemical that will interfere with the gear oil?

i really like the channel loving the engine build, but this video just was a waste of time.. youve covered it alot and so has everyone who ever made a jeep video... 30k miles change the diff fluid.. thats ludicrous, if its not getting contaminated with water its good for close to the life of the vehicle or atleast the life of the diff bearings.. the oil is virtually good for as long as you could think of driving it just gets ruined by water/metal wear contamination changing this fluid every 30k is just burning money and wasting time.. use the money to get hub locks so you can disconnect the front driveline from spinning furing daily driving way better investment`
@JeepSolid6 жыл бұрын
Don't worry, engine rebuild videos are coming soon. Factory service manual recommends changing diff fluid every 30k. I figure the engineers know better than I do.
