I have taken an empty Maxi lock cone thread spool turned it upside down and attached it to a bobbin and been able to wind a lot of thread on to that. I use packing tape to hold the spool and bobbin together.

is there a reason why u have to glue the bobbin on the bottom of the empty spool instead of just attaching the empty spool onto the bobbin winder? is it optional?

The bobbin fits into the bobbin winder but the spool does not so you need to glue the bobbin to the spool.
