Sorry that wasn't my intention its a great transfer the Korean version is just and overall better presentation with packaging and menus. The Dolby Vision adds a slight uptick with the colors thats it, but not all 4ks are created equal the Japanese version I just got is great has Dolby Vision too but the colors seem more flat. Just a reminder, not all 4k discs are region free. Yes, it supposed to be part of the "standard", but some titles will still have it; for instance i recently decided to pick up the 4k versions of the first 3 predator movies. I can find a decent amount new and a good price, but they are region 2/B, not just the BR's that are included. if its the region 1\A, the 3-set goes for 150$+. and is from Japan. IF you can even find one. So just a reminder, if your looking for a hard to find or OOP title and find a too good to be true deal, verify its the correct region. if its cheaper than others, its more than likely region locked 4k disc.
@80sMadeConsumer

I thought there was a small handful of region locked 4ks most being from the US. So when I bought the region free player I made sure to get a 4k region free now it’s modified but works flawlessly. And I have a standard 4k player so I try and report my findings on any imports. But you make a good point and something most people might not be aware of. Thanks for your comment.

For instance, The Goonies... I have the dvd, the blu ray, the 4k, and a Cineamuseum "prestiege" 4k release of the Goonies - BUT I am looking for their 2 other release variants and the 2 steelbooks I dont have...it is a problem hahaha...but I'll only do that for a handful of - maybe my top 20 or 25 favorite films all-time....the hunt is fun too!!!

I did just order American Beauty from Nova a week ago still in transit takes a while for anything coming from Korea. I have a Sony a80k got it last year and it’s amazing I used to have the Samsung curved lcd 4k one of the really early models I hated it glad when it went up in smoke. For a year after that I used my old 1080p plasma tv smaller but had a way better picture than the Samsung. This OLED is absolutely amazing took some time to fine tune but love the picture quality. I don’t think you’re necessarily missing out if you have nothing to compare it to it’ll be ok it took me 3 years to finally get mine and the only reason I mention it in my videos is because some movie reviewers mention stuff that I don’t see and so I’m positive their settings are off. The OLED gives you nice blacks my old lcd looked gray and colors were washed out.

I think your going to find that the word definitive when it comes to colour grading of HDR releases that you will find most feel directors and editors alike that come back to assist in these films are modernizing the colour pallet and that often DVD/laserdisc era and early 1080p transfers are in some cases a better representation of the theatrical colour timing. Thus some people are keeping formats and folding them into one release especial as some steelbooks or special packaging is on one format you own that didn't include a 4K disc or a Blu-ray but want to keep the best packaged edition and Frankenstein it with a bonus disc in a paper sleeve.
@80sMadeConsumer
@80sMadeConsumer 2 ай бұрын
I’ve thought of doing that with a few releases that didn’t have all the special features older DVDs had but most of the time I really only care about my favorites and just keep multiple formats anyway at first it was the art then the special features then it became something else to collect. I don’t have any Laser Disc yet but I have CED, Betamax, VHS, UMD, DVD, Blu-ray, & now 4k. But this search for the definitive edition has the package appeal but also better quality picture and sound

It’s a very under looked and under appreciated genre of foreign films. If you are interested in expanding your collection with out any region restrictions I highly recommend getting a region free player ( if you haven’t looked into it yet I have a video coming out next week) most 4ks are region free but harder to find Blu-rays that aren’t region locked.

I've owned my movie collection on VHS, DVD, and now Blu-Ray. Having compared some Blu-Ray and 4K, I've decided not to replace all my films with 4K unless it's the only option. There's not enough of a noticeable improvement to make it worthwhile.

On a lot of newer movies especially ones shot digitally there isn't a huge difference but the real leap is from older movies shot on film that also didn't get a restoration when it was put on Blu-ray. I still watch VHS on an old CRT tv not everything needs an upgrade but my focus is on my favorites things that get watched regularly.
@musicman8270
@musicman8270 Ай бұрын
This is true. Especially dramas and Rom-coms, etc. Oddly I've found that B&W films do quite well on 4k. But quite often the difference between 4k and Blu is slight. Sometimes, especially with TV shows, its DVD or nothing. Or expensive. My copy of Silverstreak was 40$, bluray
@80sMadeConsumer
@80sMadeConsumer Ай бұрын
@@musicman8270 yes B&W films look very nice on 4k and while the black bars never bother me with most other films anything that’s in 4:3 aspect ratio I prefer to watch on the old tube tv. If I don’t own the movie sure I’ll get the 4k but don’t feel the need to upgrade films from the 1920s at those higher prices not saying never just no rush. Tv shows are the same most I enjoy are in 4:3 anyway so I’ve ripped them to my computer and use a Plex server for them. But Friends is getting a 4k widescreen release I’ll be getting it day one!

I have found the same thing it does seem that the imports have better packaging but also better overall discs. I had a 4k player that the laser was off by a hair, would read DVDs Blu-ray’s no problem. 3 out of every 10 4k discs wouldn’t work but would work in other players so it wasn’t a bad disc per se, the margins are tight when manufacturing and off a tiny bit no read error. Haven’t had that experience with any imports and they seem to load faster too.

Spot on, wonderful and true advice. I wasted money in the beginning lying to myself that I’m not a collector and just want my core favorites and then classics that I’ve never seen and then and then. But at some point space, display, and waiting for or picking up best version come into play. Purpose and a plan is key. Doing what makes you happy is the most important. The other issue is that I love art. So when I think the 4K Best Buy Steelbook for Scarface is my favorite they will drop a new one with amazing art work like the one that’s coming out. And I have to say okay, same disc but different art work, do I sell and upgrade or let it be 😅 And they Let is 🔥 wow

I mean just look at season tickets, or the amount of people that get excited when a celebrity pays millions for a card or comic etc… at the end of the day do what makes you happy collecting isn’t for everyone but if it is life is good! @@80sMadeConsumer that’s interesting, I never thought about too many hobbies or money wasted on interests that fade 🤔 I guess if it was worth it at the time then it was worth it, but hindsight is 20/20. You’re right though, focus is important. Even a rich man couldn’t afford them all 😆 and finding out what will last personally and not be a fad or trend rant fades. What I love about movies and shows is that everyone has their favorite or something they love. Books are important but I can find someone who refuses to read. Same with all the other hobbies I listed. But I’ve yet to meet someone who doesn’t have a favorite movie or show and even if they don’t realize it, would love for have a hard copy in hand within their possession.

Always baffles why they release a totally region free 4K and then add in all the extras on the bluray region locked, I guess it differentiates them from another region release. Does make collecting those boutique 4K a n annoyance though. Even more baffling is that you read region A on the box and then you find out it is actually region free blu-ray (as long as you assume the comments are correct). So far only go for 4K and bluray (region B) though, and touchwood, have yet to come across a region locked 4K. Bought many Korean DVD boxsets that were much (much) better quality than any UK versions

Excellent points you bring up so far what I can tell looking at the ones on eBay are all regions and and I’ve found a couple of people that have ordered from them directly no complaints other than takes a while to ship but that’s with most imports. Once I started importing movies I had a few that were region locked so I did get a region free 4k/Blu-ray player so that worry is gone for me but I’m aware not everyone is so I do make sure to point out my findings when I import. To be extra safe I’d probably pay with pay pal or something that is more secure than giving your cc info. Doubt anything is restored locally I expect they use other masters the version I have looks and sounds exactly like the Columbia Pictures release but with richer colors. Currently I am trying to get every Leon release there is, and I just picked up the Japanese version while excellent I prefer the Nova Media version. Hope that helps

I grew up with video rental stores and that experience was better than digital renting something about physically holding a movie in your had taking the time to find a hidden gem, and then being able to watch it a few times before having to return it was worth every penny. Digitally renting I never understood did it once and it felt empty. Good for you starting a collection, now is the best time to get into it. You can find cheap movies at thrift stores, if you’re in America Big Lots has cheap movies too. I still collect VHS, DVDs Blu-ray’s and 4ks. One thing I suggest is really start with your favorites and expand from there, joining a movie community will keep you informed of things available. Plenty here on KZbin and Reddit forums. So as to not waste money find out early what kind of collector you are can’t tell how many movies I’ve bought twice because of getting the dvd then the 4k came out or I had a standard version and then there was a premium boxset that had lots of special features.
